Dave NickleHello everyone! The response to the call for volunteers for the campaign has been absolutely wonderful! I am excited by the team we are assembling. If you're thinking of volunteering, please go here: http://davenickle.ndp.ca/volunteer Be advised that every volunteer that has put their name forward over the last few days will be contacted by the weekend. Our volunteer coordinator has a lot of names to contact so it is taking a bit longer than we thought at first! Thank you so much for your commitment, and I look forward to working with you on the campaign!

Siobhan CoadyEarlier today, Liberal Leader Dwight Ball announced two priority commitments for seniors Gander, August 4, 2015 – Today Liberal Leader Dwight Ball announced that under a new Liberal Government all seniors aged 70 years and older living in Newfoundland and Labrador will benefit from annual Healthy Living Assessments at no cost to them. “We have one of the fastest aging populations and by 2025 one in four people living in this province will be a senior citizen,” said Ball. “As our population ages, there will be expanded healthcare needs but we know most seniors will want to continue to age in their own home, in their communities.” Ball says Healthy Living Assessments will help keep seniors healthier through preventative measures and education, allowing them to stay in their homes longer, and reduce costs on the healthcare system. Healthy Living Assessments will be voluntary, in-home, annual assessments conducted by qualified healthcare professionals. Similar assessments in Denmark, Australia and the Netherlands have shown significant benefits both to the health and well-being of their aging populations but also on healthcare costs, with the reduced need for long-term care and hospital care, and less visits to the emergency room by seniors. New Brunswick has also recently launched a seniors’ consultation program to promote healthy aging. Ball says the program will cost $6 million per year to deliver, bringing short- and long-term benefits to the province. “There is compelling support for the investment in this kind of program for Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Ball. “The benefits of the Healthy Living Assessments will extend across a number of different areas, but if we prevent just 160 falls per year, the cost of delivering the program will be covered.” Falls are the number one reason for visits to the emergency room by seniors in Newfoundland and Labrador, with 1,200 being hospitalized for an average of 22 days after having a fall, costing the province’s healthcare system $45 million dollars for falls alone each year. The Liberal Leader says the Healthy Living Assessment program will begin in early 2016 with an analysis of priority areas with the most susceptible populations, assessment team development, training and program planning in preparation for a late 2016 roll-out. Today Ball also committed as a new Liberal government to pass legislation to create the Office of the Seniors Advocate. The Seniors Advocate would be independent of government and would not report to the Minister but instead to the House of Assembly, similar to the Child and Youth Advocate. With a cost of $500,000 per year, Ball says the office is critical to seniors and ensuring there is a strong, independent voice to identify, develop, implement and evaluate the services and programs they require.

Chris AlexanderWe had a great rally with Prime Minister Harper last night in Ajax. The choice for Canadians on October 19 will be clear -- between proven leadership on the economy and the international stage on the one hand, and Liberal and NDP higher taxes, ideology and inexperience on the other.

Dave NickleIbbitson writes that Harper’s criticism of the chief justice set a “dangerous precedent” and now ranks as one of his “most discreditable acts” as prime minister. The Courts need to be left to decide without interference. This is a separation of powers that is critical in a democratic nation.

Dave NickleThe NDP, and the CCF beforehand, has always been the biggest supporter of public healthcare. In fact, it was the NDP pushing for public healthcare during a minority government that made it a reality. After eight years in government, Stephen Harper’s Conservatives have failed to improve public health care. Instead, they’re cutting $36-billion in funding—even before our provincial Health Accords come up for renegotiation in 2014. This is simply wrong. New Democrats have a practical plan to strengthen your public health care—not cut it. Because your family deserves the best quality care, wherever you live: - Better home care, long term care, and palliative care; - Expanded public coverage for prescription drugs; - Putting patients at the centre of primary care; - Tackling the social determinants of health; - Recognizing the importance of mental health; and - Improving health care services for Aboriginal peoples and others in federal jurisdiction. Most Canadians say that health care is a top priority. New Democrats agree. Isn’t it time our government in Ottawa made health care a priority too? (ndp.ca/healthcare)

PEINDPCardigan - Meet Your Candidate!! Billy is a successful entrepreneur who takes great pride in Eastern PEI. With Tom Mulcair’s NDP team, he’ll get results for the people of Cardigan riding—and work hard to help families, businesses and communities get ahead. Billy owns Cann's Construction, Cann's Waterfront Retreat, and Waterfront Rentals in Montague. As a successful small business owner, he is a proven job creator in our community. Earlier, he worked in the lobster fishing industry and gained a strong understanding of the challenges faced by seasonal workers. A firm believer in giving back to his community, Billy also volunteers with local addictions and social action groups that help people in need. Billy recognizes the challenges our region faces. Household debt is rising. Young families are struggling to find meaningful full-time work that will allow them to stay on PEI. Communities also need funding for road and other infrastructure projects. And with Tom Mulcair’s NDP, he’s ready to tackle these challenges head-on. Along with his wife Diane, Billy is a proud resident of Gaspereaux, near Montague, where they live with their three dogs. He grew up in a large and close-knit family on a small mixed farm in the community.
