What an amazing experience! While terribly disappointed in the results, I am extremely proud of my exceptional team and the positive impact we made throughout the three communities in our new district. Thank you to everyone who helped our campaign and everyone who supported us throughout this journey. It's been my privilege to be able to talk to thousands of neighbours on their doorsteps, hear their concerns and issues. It's also made me more determined that we keep working towards making our province the best that we can. We must rebuild and reconnect. It doesn't stop here. I'll get back to working for our community, Halifax, and the province very shortly, but for now, a bit of rest. With gratitude, Abad (p.s. we're still missing some signs, so if you see or have one yourself, please send along a message. Thank you!)

Dear friends, Tomorrow is the big day. Election Day. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone. My volunteers, office team, canvassing team, and of course, my neighbours who I've had the great opportunity to get to know better these past few months. To my neighbours: this experience has been humbling and rewarding. It has been my privilege to be able to knock on your door, to listen to your issues and concerns, and to share with you a vision of a more progressive community and province. A vision that strives towards ensuring security for our seniors. A vision that pushes to provide our children and young people with the best education and opportunities. A vision that fights to make sure that no one is left behind. A vision that promises to keep doing better, to keep pushing the yardsticks, and one that never says yes to the status quo. I am proud to run for the party that represents these beliefs and values. I am proud to be part of a team that won't take no for an answer. Progress requires vision, but it also requires conviction. An implicit understanding of where we've come from and an explicit strategy to get to where we need to. Towards a more caring and just society. That is the NDP. I humbly ask for your support and vote in Fairview-Clayton Park to ensure that we keep building on the strong, principled leadership of our retiring MLA Graham Steele. I'm also asking you to encourage others to support and vote for their NDP candidate in other districts tomorrow. Together, we can choose to keep moving the yardsticks forward. Don't let them tell you it can't be done. Sincerely, Abad Khan NDP Candidate for Fairview - Clayton Park

As Tuesday's election nears, the Chronicle Herald asked this question of the leaders of the three main parties: What is the single important change that Nova Scotians will see in four years if you are elected premier? DARRELL DEXTER, NDP The single most important change that Nova Scotians will see in four years is much more of the better health care, good starts for kids and dignity for seniors that are possible when we work together. That can happen if Nova Scotians decide to keep investing in good new jobs, rather than saying no to jobs and small business and no to the job incentives that are opening up new opportunities. That can happen if Nova Scotians listen to health-care workers and focus on better care, instead of doing things just like in 1999, when the Liberals closed 1,600 hospital beds, froze long-term care beds, and drove 1,000 nurses out of the province. I know the NDP have not accomplished everything you hoped for. No one is more aware of that than me. But we have learned and we have made progress. Nova Scotia leads Canada in keeping emergency care open, and providing same-day care at collaborative clinics. Nova Scotia leads North America in attracting direct investment that creates jobs. Nova Scotia leads the world in new locally owned green energy, and Nova Scotia is a partner in Atlantic Canada’s greatest environmental step forward — the Muskrat Falls/Maritime Link hydro development. I am asking every one of you to think hard about the future. Do we keep going forward together, or do turn backwards to ideas that were proven wrong on jobs, and wrong on health care? The choice is clear. There is much more to do. Let’s work together, to create more opportunities for young people, good education for our children, security for seniors, and better health care for families. Let’s go forward, and finish what we started. Thank you.

Today Premier Darrell Dexter announced the NDP will make it easier and quicker for children with special needs to get the services they need with a five-step plan that puts families first. “Nothing means more to a parent than knowing their child can get the best start in life. Under the NDP we’ve worked with families to make getting support easier but there is still more to do,” said Dexter. The three-year, $6-million NDP five-step plan will: * Invest in Early Intervention Programs to eliminate the current waitlist and reduce future wait times. * Increase salaries for Early Intervention Program staff to help with staff recruitment to reduce the waitlist. * Create a team of Family Navigators based out of the IWK Health Centre who will be the main point of contact for each family receiving early intervention services. The family navigator will work directly with the family to develop a care plan, coordinate necessary care providers and pull in specialists and therapists as needed. * Ensure a family-centered approach to serve families with more than one child with special needs. * Provide more flexibility for families who need respite care.

We welcomed Premier Darrell Dexter to our Fairview-Clayton Park office yesterday where he announced our commitment to build another 1100 long-term care beds. The NSNDP commitment to build another 1100 is on top of the 1000 long-term care beds that we built over our first four years as government. We've also made investments in home care and invested in programs Seniors Home Repair program. The NDP is standing up for seniors. The number of long-term care beds under the Liberal platform? ZERO.

NDP Candidate Becky Kent said today Liberal and Tory governments had 16 years to lower small business taxes but it took an NDP government before taxes for small businesses were reduced in Nova Scotia. “The Liberals were too focused on cuts, closures and layoffs to think about lowering small business taxes. The Conservatives spent their time bankrupting seniors in long term care and wasting money on things like kiddie ATVs,” said Kent. “Both these parties ignored the pleas from small business to lower taxes.” The NDP began immediately lowering small business taxes, dropping the small business tax rate by 40 per cent in four years.

Nova Scotia unemployment rate decreases: The Statistics Canada report shows Nova Scotia’s unemployment rate dropped to 8.7 per cent, and remains the lowest in the Atlantic region. “Nova Scotians want access to good jobs here at home. We’ve worked hard to help business large and small create those jobs,” said Minister Steele. Steele says the Liberals and the Conservatives would have turned employers away effectively killing job opportunities for people in Nova Scotia. “Nova Scotians need a government willing to fight for good jobs in order to build a stronger province,” said Steele. There are actually 6,600 more people employed in Nova Scotia than there were when the NDP took office in June, 2009. http://nsndp.ca/jobs-and-the-economy/nova-scotia-unemployment-rate
