As part of the lead up to Canada’s 150th celebrations in 2017, Equal Voice is launching a national initiative, Daughters of the Vote, to recognize a significant event in Canadian history: The 100th anniversary of the first voting rights for a select number of Canadian women granted in 1916. Equal Voice is inviting young women, ages 18-23, to apply to participate in a national initiative in which 338 women, one from each federal riding, will be selected to take their seat in Parliament, literally. Observing provincial and territorial events throughout 2017, including at Queen’s Park, the women will represent their communities in a culminating leadership forum on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, March 6-8th 2017. Throughout the program the women will meet and hear from outstanding women leaders from every sector. Applicants are invited to apply online at www.daughtersofthevote.ca between April 15 to June 15, 2016. Applications from Ontario will be reviewed by a 10 member Ontario provincial selection committee comprised of female MPPs, Indigenous leaders and corporate and community members. Successful applicants will be notified in late August 2016.

On April 20th I had the pleasure of inviting girls from St. Nicolas of Bari, St. Rita Catholic School and St. Clare Catholic Elementary School to Queens Park for Girls Government Day. The girls had an opportunity to witness Legislative procceedings and understand what it is like to work in politics Girls’ Government is an MPP-led, school-based program designed to support the development of leadership skills and an interest in politics in grade six to grade eight girls. With their MPP as a guide and role-model, and with the support of their teacher, the groups of girls will choose an issue and learn how to effectively advocate for that issue. The Girls and I will be meeting throughout the coming months to advocate for an issue. Thank you for all those who made Girl's Government Day a success!

April 2nd, 2016 marked the 8th Annual United Nations’ World Autism Awareness Day. To honour this celebration, I was delighted to host an art opening at my constituency office's rotating art gallery to welcome a new exhibit from the Creative Spirit Art Centre for the month of April. At the event I also spoke about Ontario’s $333 million investment in new funding for Autism Services to meet the diverse needs of our children, youth and their families. The Creative Spirit Art Centre is a fantastic organization in our riding which offers people with disabilities a variety of creative opportunities by providing them with art education and studio space. Young artist Orhan Guven produced an exhibition entitled: “Autism / Unframed / Reframed”, inspired by the cityscapes and architectural features of international cities of Toronto, New York City, Paris and Istanbul. His artwork explores the highly intricate relationship between perspective and structure. I want to give a special thank you to Orhan for giving me private drawing lessons during the event. I am truly inspired by your mesmerizing talent. Thank you to Ginny Pearce, President of Autism Ontario for speaking about the important work their organization does to promote World Autism Awareness Day across 400 Ontario schools.

On March 30th I had the opportunity to make a presentation to over 200 grade 11 and 12 students at St. Mary's Catholic Secondary School about the Ontario Student Grant. Ontario is making college and university more accessible and affordable for low- and middle-income students in Davenport through the single-largest modernization ever of the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). As announced in the 2016 Budget, the government will create a single, targeted, non-repayable grant — the Ontario Student Grant — starting in the 2017-18 school year. The changes to OSAP will make average tuition free for more than 150,000 eligible low- and middle-income students across the province and will reduce the cost for many more by providing the majority of eligible students whose parents earn the median annual income of $83,300 or less with enough in grants to more than cover their tuition costs and eliminating provincial student loan debt for eligible students whose parents earn less than $50,000.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to comment on a Private Members's Motion brought forth by MPP for Ottawa—Orléans, Marie-Francis Lalond. The Motion would allow the creation of statue to commemorate Rae Luckock and Agnes Macphail, the first two female Members of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. This motion is especially significant as Rae Luckock was the member from Bracondale, am area which is now part of the Davenport riding. Also, as the firs female member of parliament for Davenport, I hope that this statue promotes a conversation that we hope to build to educate Ontarians about these female trailblazers.

RE: Davenport Diamond Rail Crossing – TPAP Dear Neighbours, On January 18th, 2016 Metrolinx hosted it’s most recent public meeting regarding their proposal to remove the Davenport Diamond rail crossing by building an 1.4km elevated guideway through the existing GO rail corridor. At this meeting we heard the community’s concerns regarding safety, noise, vibration, ridership, and the need for a full assessment of all of the options. As a result, I wrote to the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, the Hon. Glen Murray on the community’s behalf, requesting that the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) be delayed until these concerns were properly addressed. This afternoon Minister Murray responded to my letter stating that the Transit Project Assessment Process is a “proponent-led, self-assessment process,” meaning that the Minister does not have the authority to delay the submission of the Notice of Commencement set to begin on January 28th, 2016. Subsequently, Metrolinx will have 120 days to receive feedback from the public, which must be both addressed and documented. At the end of this period a final Environmental Project Report is submitted by Metrolinx to the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change. If outstanding concerns remain at the end of TPAP, residents can submit objections to the Ministry for consideration. Once TPAP is completed and objections are received, the Minister can either give the proponent a notice allowing the project to proceed; a notice requiring further consideration, or a notice allowing them to proceed subject to conditions set out in the notice. I have included a copy of Minister Murray's letter in this post. I remain committed to holding Metrolinx accountable to a project that engages our residents and includes the types of world class legacy pieces that bring real benefits to our community. This means continuing to advocate for a new GO Station along this rail corridor so residents can utilize Regional Express Rail as an efficient, alternative and electrified mode of transit as well as ensuring that we connect communities within Davenport. As your MPP, I will continue to take any concerns you may have directly to Metrolinx and the Minister of Transportation. As we move into the Transit Project Assessment Process for the removal of the Davenport Diamond, I want to encourage you to remain engaged and I look forward to hearing from all of you. Sincerely, Cristina

Dear Neighbours, This past July I was proud to host Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca in Davenport for a Transit Town Hall so as to provide a forum for residents to raise any concerns and ask any pressing questions regarding a number of different transportation infrastructure projects taking place in our community. I have also worked with Metrolinx to help organize a number of public meetings in Davenport to hear further comments from residents regarding the Davenport Diamond. Residents have been consistently clear that, with any infrastructure project that takes place, an additional GO station at Bloor would significantly improve transit in our community. Understanding the importance of transit in Davenport, I have continuously advocated on behalf of our community and have been in regular contact with Minister Del Duca regarding a potential GO station at Bloor and even welcomed him on a tour of the potential site this past summer. I was very pleased when it was announced by Metrolinx this past fall that Bloor made the top 50 list of potential new stations, that will be further analyzed. I am committed to continuing to work with the Minister and Metrolinx to champion an additional GO station in our community. Should Metrolinx move forward on the overpass option in January, I will also continue to champion for modern and environmentally sound legacy pieces that properly represent this vibrant community, such as green space and cycling and walking trails, which were also recommended by the Residents’ Reference Panel. I wanted to once again reaffirm my commitment to working with residents to ensure that any infrastructure project that takes place in Davenport will bring real benefits to our community. I will continue to keep you posted. Sincerely, Cristina Martins MPP for Davenport

RE: Davenport Diamond Environmental Assessment Dear Neighbours, As many of you know, the elimination of the Davenport Diamond is a project that will bring major change to our community. In order to fulfill our government’s commitment to provide all-day two-way electrified GO service it is imperative, for the safety of the community and the efficiency of service, that we remove this crossing. From the onset of this project, I have been committed to working with residents and all levels of government to ensure that our Davenport community gets the best possible project because this is what our community deserves; an asset and not a liability. I also committed to taking any questions and concerns directly to the Minister of Transportation as well as Metrolinx. I will continue to push Metrolinx and the Ministry of Transportation to look at all options for the removal of the Davenport Diamond. I have a commitment from Metrolinx that any project that moves forward will be in line with the electrification of the Barrie GO line. In the event that Metrolinx decides to move forward with an overpass in January, I will continue to champion for a GO station in our community, along with modern and environmentally sound legacy pieces that properly represent this vibrant community.
