ndpI have known Eric Rebiere for a couple of years, and no one has worked harder to bring PTSD issues to light on behalf of RCMP officers who volunteer for military service. I'm very thankful to The Whig for the great job they did with this piece. DJB.May 14, 2012 6:48 pm | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands
ndp"It's difficult to understand somebody who represents the government, a minister of crown, can so consistently mistake numbers to the public," NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair said.May 13, 2012 11:12 am | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands
ndpI think it has to be said that our MP Ted Hsu is hanging in there and doing his best to take the Conservatives to task over the closure of Kingston Penitentiary. I would personally like to see some more raised community voices over the decision - not just because of the lost jobs and our affected local economy - but because as our representative has rightly pointed out: this penitentiary does not appear to be poorly run or a money drain...Nor has the government confirmed what will be saved through the closure. I still believe this move, along with cuts at CFB, RMC, Immigration, EI in Kingston have been unfairly focused on this city. DJB.May 12, 2012 10:28 pm | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands

ndpThe lack of debate and accountability on the budget and environmental oversight has reached a breaking point for both the Official Opposition and environmental groups. This story may continue to develop throughout the day. DJB.May 07, 2012 8:00 am | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands
ndpIt looks like the case in Guelph is becoming abundantly clear. I am hopeful that Elections Canada can find the same clear path in some of the other ridings that experienced electoral fraud. DJB.May 04, 2012 5:33 pm | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands
ndpHuge disclaimer: I didn't feel like 308.com had a proper grasp of the polls leading into last year's election, and I am not about to give them huge credit now...But favourable polls still warm the heart. DJB.May 04, 2012 7:16 am | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands

ndpCanadians Veterans Advocacy has been working tirelessly to turn back the tide of Conservative clawbacks to veterans' services and benefits. This recent victory in NS Supreme Court is a milestone for the cause of fairness for our veterans. ndpNo consultation with the workers who are going to be put at risk by this move and no defined plan for safely moving inmates into sufficient facilities...and our local MP still can't acquire adequate information on how much will be saved when the move has been paid for. Video included.May 01, 2012 7:52 am | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands
ndpWhen we look at the recent cuts to our local institutional jobs and public services, we need look no further than the massive bank bonuses that were paid out to a sector that was lauded as 'the best in the world'. Even during the recession, profits continued to roll in and our government continued to hand them additional money under the table. DJB.May 01, 2012 7:32 am | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands

ndpThanks to the City of Kingston for choosing to honour Vince Maloney through the naming of this affordable housing project. I will be there at 2PM at 771 Montreal St. tomorrow, and I hope to see other community members there as well to congratulate Vince.Apr 26, 2012 9:12 pm | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands

ndpThere were so many articles last week on the closure of Kingston Penitentiary. I have spent much of the evening re-reading through them, and I wanted to give a lot of credit and thanks to Mayor Gerretsen for focusing on the corrections officers and staff who were affected by this decision. DJB.Apr 23, 2012 9:25 pm | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands
ndpFor all of those who have been following along with the Ontario budget negotiations, it was a great relief to see Premier McGuinty take fairness and the recommendations of ONDP leader Andrea Horwath to heart. But beyond the budget, our work is not finished...And I pass along to you the commentary from our past provincial candidate, Mary Rita Holland.Apr 23, 2012 8:06 pm | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands

ndpThis is a massive story for our community, and it will take a bit of time to figure out just how much of an impact it will have. There are 460 employees at Kingston pen alone, so that many jobs could be at stake, which would leave a huge hole in the local economy. DJB.Apr 19, 2012 8:29 am | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands
ndpArticles like this are like public opinion polls...They create a narrative from a grain of truth, but should not be relied upon to tell the whole story. The challenge for New Democrats is not worry about the narrative - but rather to staty focused on our communities and prepare ourselves to defend the public interest each and every day. DJB.Apr 18, 2012 9:25 pm | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands
ndpApr 18, 2012 1:36 pm | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands
ndpIt is a widespread opinion that this Conservative budget is the worst in Canadian history with respect to the environment. This trend must be reversed immediately, and I am hopeful that in 2015 Canadians will give New Democrats a chance to set things right and engage our shared environmental concerns with meaningful legislation and caring instead of contempt. DJB.Apr 18, 2012 1:32 pm | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands
ndpIt's very rare that Chantal Hebert is so down on the prospects of the Liberal Party, but it has become clearer with each passing day that Thomas Mulcair and the NDP have become the alternative to a dishonest and regressive Conservative government.Apr 16, 2012 11:53 am | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands

ndpThanks to the National Farmers' Union and other groups for trying to shed light on what has otherwise been 'secret' trade negotiations with the EU.Apr 10, 2012 8:51 am | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands
ndpConservative budget layoffs continue to affect Kingston in a huge way. From this Whig report, it looks like 68 jobs at RMC on top of 59 lost jobs at CFB Kingstson. Additional jobs losses have already come at the expense of Service Canada and the EI Centre that has been moved to North Bay. That leaves a huge hole in our local economy. ndpHot on the heels of a budget that does little to create jobs and constains drastic cuts to public services, the Auditor General confirms what we all guessed: That the Conservative Government has been lying about the costs of the F-35 jets since before the 2011 election. DJB.Apr 05, 2012 10:58 am | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands
ndpThere were brief articles in the Whig and on CKWS about the possible effects of these cuts on CFB Kingston. I think we have to look very closely at what jobs are going to be lost in this community - at CFB and beyond. Kingston's EI Centre was closed months ago and this impacted the delivery of services for many seasonal workers. It is not simply the loss of public servants...It's the loss of public services. ndpThanks to NDP MP David Christopherson for this motion to give more power to Elections Canada to investigate campaign expenses. The motion was proposed last week and tweaked so its measures would apply to past as well as future federal elections.Mar 12, 2012 9:10 pm | Ontario, Kingston and the Islands
ndpThanks to the organizers for inviting me to speak at the Public Forum at Confederation Basin yesterday...We had a very good turnout, considering the limited time to spread the work - and most importantly, many community members raised their voices and spoke to the issue of electoral reform, vote suppression and grassroots democracy.
