Today I was joined by Mike Holmes at George Brown College to announce that the province is moving to protect homebuyers in Ontario by creating higher standards and qualifications for home inspectors. This fall, as part of a broader consumer protection initiative, the province will consult with home inspector associations, consumers, representatives from the real estate sector and other industry stakeholders on mandatory minimum qualifications for home inspectors. The province has already started to support improvements in the home inspection sector by investing in a two-year Home Inspection Technician (Co-op) diploma program at Sault College, which is the first of its kind in Ontario. The program is presently teaching students about residential home construction so that they can assist home builders and conduct home inspections. The Home Inspection Technician program includes a combination of classroom, laboratory and workshop learning so that students are highly qualified to enter the home inspection field. The program also includes a co-op work placement to ensure graduates have work experience to compliment their academic studies.

Last week, Bryan Hayes, MP and I presented the 44 recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals for Sault Ste. Marie and Area. Medal recipients were recognized for their significant community contributions at a celebration held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25. This new commemorative medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada and honours her life-long commitment to her responsibilities, by recognizing those who have made significant contributions to Ontario and Canada. A sincere congratulations goes out to all recipients, and thank you to each of the nominees for their continued exemplary service to our community.

New legislation to provide greater protection for consumers of wireless phone services passed first reading in the Ontario legislature today. The legislation includes measures originally proposed in two of my past private member’s bills. The Wireless Services Agreement Act, 2012 contains measures to bring greater fairness to contracts for wireless services. Specifically, the bill places clear and reasonable limits on cancellation charges; requires the express consent of the consumer to renew, extend or amend a contract; and requires greater disclosure and clarity in contracts for wireless services, among other provisions.

On Friday I was joined by MNR officials to announce the start of construction on the new 6,700-square foot building at the Sault Ste. Marie airport that will house an $8.5 million state-of-the-art flight training centre. The flight training centre, which is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2013, includes a flight simulator that accurately mimics the sights, sounds and motions of a CL-415 heavy water bomber plane. It will allow pilots to practice flight in simulated severe weather and instrument failures. In addition, use of the flight simulator for training will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and wear and tear on the nine CL-415 aircraft in the government’s current forest firefighting fleet.
