Dear friends, I thought I would keep you up to date on a few recent events in the lives of the Bertschi-Orth household. We are all healthy, thank goodness. “The kids”, now young adults are finding their own ways. I was humbled to receive the Orléans Chamber of Commerce “Professional of the Year Award” just this past January. Unfortunately, we lost one of our wonderful Golden Retrievers, Bear, just a week ago. BOS Law is working hard to ensure our clients receive the best legal services possible. I am getting ready to become the President of The Canadian Defence Lawyers this coming June. Finally, despite living in the “coldest capital in the world” and occasional gossip, motivated apparently by some who are worried about my future political plans, I am eternally grateful to have a wonderful family, friends and colleagues and to live in the best country in the world. Speaking of politics, as the election will be upon us this fall and as a consequence, we can expect innumerous postings replete with misinformation, I thought I should share with you my revised response to a comment posted underneath an article written by Lee Berthiaume on line in the Ottawa Citizen on February 15th, 2015 and published in print today. Here is a revised version of the comment I posted in reply to a comment posted about the article. “I was green lit or my candidacy to run for the Liberal Party of Canada was formally approved in the spring of 2014. Jack Siegel, who Chairs the National Green Light Committee advised me on November 4th that my candidacy was in order. Jack was actually complimentary of how to date in 2014, I had raised over $100,000 and that I still had 6 months until May 15th and almost a year to raise less than $50,000 before the next election. In other words, I had more than 2/3 of my debt paid off and less than a 1/3 remaining with time to spare! Sadly, the revocation occurred more than a year after I had started my bid to be re - nominated and interestingly, after our team had just recruited approximately 500 new members to the Liberal riding association in September and October 2014. I suspect our ongoing strong membership drive came as a big surprise to the back room boys and ladies at LPC HQ and to a few others. On Friday, November 7th at approx. 5 pm, the Liberal Party Co-Chairs revoked my candidacy, quoting that they had the discretionary power to invoke this power. Someone, leaked their letter 7 days later to the press. Ironically, Jack Seigel, advised my lawyer after November 7th 2014, that "at no time did the Green Light Committee recommend, consider or even discuss revoking David's candidacy". The record is clear, I was ahead of my debt repayment schedule as approved by the Green Light Committee. The Trudeau “Leadership” group favored Andrew Leslie but Leslie was well behind our local, grass root membership drive. My candidacy was withdrawn for political reasons, to allow my opponent to be the uncontested candidate in my home riding. As was said in the past about opinions and facts, “everyone is entitled to their opinions but not to choose the facts". I believe that the Green Light Committee process does work as long as it is allowed to vet all candidates - yes, even the so called "Stars" and as long as the politicos don't interfere in the process. I have always stated, that I recognize, (until deemed by a court of law as unconstitutional) that sections of the Elections Act as adopted in the LPC constitution allow the Leader & his or her Campaign Chair to exercise their discretion to appoint or revoke a candidate's status to run under a party's banner. Under todays laws and rules this must be done fairly and without malicious intent. What has been disingenuous and offensive, is that, instead of standing up and saying directly, "I am appointing so and so " Justin Trudeau has either approved, encouraged or condoned unelected party advisors and “officials” to revoke or interfere in Nomination races across our country. Furthermore, in many cases, including in my community, Trudeau refused to allow the residents of Orleans the right to exercise their Democratic and Constitutional Right to vote for the candidate of their choice - whomever that may be..which was and remains, an affront to the principles of democracy and a clear breach of his much touted and often repeated refrain of "Open and Transparent nominations across Canada". The circumvention of the Green Light process by the “Trudeau Leadership group” in our home community Orléans and elsewhere in Canada is not about David Bertschi - it is about encouraging residents in all communities to participate and to choose the candidate of their choice to represent them for the highest elected office in our land. Democracy, fairness and Canadian values are at stake and I will not be bullied into submission or silence. Have a wonderful and a happy Family Day. Democracy is all about choice and real open nominations. Withdrawing a candidate and bullying others to withdraw is not worthy of a 'LEADER". If your "star candidate" can't even win with all your teams help..NEWS FLASH...he won't be able to win an election!! Just Saying... http://goo.gl/meRkBe

Another blatant example of the "Leadership" interfering in a riding poised for success. I believe in the Green Light process. In my case, unelected officials invoked 2.7 of the Liberal Constitution to thwart the will of grass root Liberals. Like myself, Dinsdale also says the party has gone to great lengths since his near victory in the last by election, to find someone other than him to run in the next election. SHAME. Real Leadership believes in community leaders, that past loyalty is worthy of respect and that fair, open transparent, nominations will inspire the voters and hone candidates skills for the upcoming elections. #1democracy. http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/Dinsdale-wont-seek-Liberal-nomination-for-Brandon-Souris-285636961.html
