- MPconPutting Canadians First: John Weston attends announcement of landmark 8-year labor deal between the BC Maritime Employers Association, headed by constituent Andy Smith, and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada. Labour Minister Lisa Raitt visited the Port of Vancouver to congratulate the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association and International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada (Longshoremen) for putting Canada first and reaching a historic eight-year collective agreement. Our Government’s top priority is the economy, and that includes ensuring Canada succeeds in an increasingly competitive global economy. While the collective agreement is great news for both parties, the real winners are Canadians themselves. This agreement will help to strengthen our economic recovery because trade can continue to flow through the Port to destinations across Canada and around the world. With this agreement, the message is clear: Canada is open to business, and can be relied upon to meet the import and export demands of the 21st century. John Weston applauds all efforts made between the parties to reach this resolution.
