Today, I tabled Bill C-263, An Act to amend the Income Tax Act (hearing impairment), which would enhance access inclusiveness for people with hearing disabilities by allowing them fair access to the Disability Tax Credit. Canadians with hearing impairments should receive the tax break they deserve. This bill recognizes the reality that these Canadians face, and I am proud to sponsor a bill that prioritizes their well-being. These changes represent a long overdue need that deaf and hard-of-hearing Canadians be treated fairly and equitably by our tax system https://peterjulian.ca/Bill_C263_An_Act_to_amend_the_Income_Tax_Act_hearing_impairment

My office has been receiving a steady flow of complaints over the years from constituents, demonstrating a serious concern in our community regarding the health and environmental effects of increased coal traffic in the Port Metro Vancouver area. Fraser Surrey Docks is proposing to expand coal exports to ship up to eight million metric tonnes of US thermal coal. Coal dust is a known health hazard, containing toxins such as lead, sulphur, and mercury. If you are worried about what the approval of shipping US thermal coal from the Fraser Surrey Docks will do to the water we drink and the air that we breathe, please sign the following e-petition (e-186) that I am sponsoring in Parliament here: https://petitions.parl.gc.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-186 I need your support to have your voices heard in Parliament. The e-Petition e-186 is posted on the parliamentary website until June 15th, 2016, after which it will no longer be available for signature. I invite you to share this link as broadly as possible by emailing it to your friends and others in the community. https://petitions.parl.gc.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-186

Great public turn out & information session on the Disability Tax Credit in Rachel Blaney's riding of North Island-Powell River. Nearly 100 people came out on a beautiful spring afternoon to learn about the Disability Tax Credit (DTC). Rachel is a dynamic hard working MP and a rising star in the Federal NDP. I welcomed the opportunity to participate in the information session on the DTC in her community. People really benefit from the information they received. Cheques will be coming to families soon as a result of this presentation.

Congratulations to Bernie Sanders for his victories in Kansas, Nebraska and Maine over the last few days! His support has really grown since his first re-election campaign to congress. Here I am with Bernie & his campaign manager in downtown Burlington Vermont listening to his victory speech after our small but determined team brought him victory in 1992. Here I am canvassing with Bernie Sanders-election material in Vermont. And here you see the crowds that Bernie Sanders attracts today.

Today, I reintroduced the Leif Erikson Day Act, Bill C-244, in Parliament. Bill C-244 designates October 9 as Leif Erikson day. Leif Erikson and his crew were the first Europeans to discover North America 1000 years ago. Leif Erikson is a part of our heritage that defines us, and a part of the country we have built. The Leif Erikson Day Act is also intended to honour the efforts and very fine contribution of Canadians of Scandinavian descent. It’s time to honour those Canadians by declaring October 9th Leif Erikson Day. You can watch the video here: https://youtu.be/BtReq292UKc

Noise pollution is much more than just a passing annoyance. As science has clearly shown, sustained noise, particularly in a residential environment, leads to serious health problems. Governments must step in and regulate noise emission and address this serious public health threat. Although rail transport is environmentally friendly, its impact on noise pollution in many communities, including in my riding of New Westminster – Burnaby, is high. I have once again tabled my Private Member's Bill (Now Bill C-218) to regulate railway noise and address the ongoing concern and hardship of communities affected by the growing railway traffic. I would be happy to receive any information that helps us to increase our knowledge and capacity to pressure the new Federal government to work to ensure everyone’s right to a good night sleep. Only strong legislation can resolve this health hazard. Let’s work together to make this happen! https://peterjulian.ca/PMB_Railway_Noise_and_Vibration_Control_Act

Here's my question today on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and income inequality: https://youtu.be/dRRJ5NVMdW0 According to several independent studies (links?) the TPP conservative agreement comes short on numerous fronts, including good job losses, lower wages, and making medication more expensive. The current version of the TPP is bad for manufacturing, sacrifices tens of thousands of good auto jobs and would worsen income inequality. Former research in motion CEO Jim Balsillie stated that the deal favors the US and could cost Canada billions in the innovation segment of the economy. The liberals have never rejected a trade deal before, even bad ones. It’s no surprise that they are moving ahead in spite of this strong evidence. http://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/liberal-government-s-stance-on-tpp-flim-flam-mulcair-1.2750828 http://www.ase.tufts.edu/gdae/policy_research/TPP_simulations.html

Here’s my speech today in response to the Conservative party’s motion in the House on pipeline projects: https://peterjulian.ca/node/840 After a decade of Conservative government rule, Canadians have simply lost faith in the federal environmental review process. And it’s the Conservative members opposite – the very sponsors of this motion that is being debated today – who are responsible. It was the Conservatives who, when in gov't, systematically dismantled laws protecting our air, land, and water, burying these attacks in budget bills, gutting the Navigable Waters Protection Act, the Environmental Assessment Act, the Fisheries Act, and the National Energy Board Act. It was the Conservatives who placed arbitrary limits on public consultations, shutting Canadians out of the project review process. Yesterday, the Liberal government rolled out a vague and ad hoc addition to the existing Conservative review process, just putting window dressing on top of what is a profoundly unstructured review process that does not lead to social licence. The Prime Minister must live up to the promises he made during the last election for a truly new process that ensures protection of our environment, earns social license, rebuilds public trust & restore credibility to the environmental assessment process. Patchwork is not enough.
