I enjoyed hanging out at the Edmonton Young Inventors Convention at the Edmonton Public School Board Centre for Education. I talked to a lot of very bright young people with interesting and practical ideas for innovative products. They had all been winners at their own school competitions and are looking for the nod to go further. A lot of them were also hoping to wind up on Dragons Den to sell their ideas to a really tough crowd.

ANZAC – Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. The 100th Anniversary of ANZAC Day occurred on 25 April and commemorates the nine-month battle at Gallipoli that resulted in 500,000 casualties amongst the Australian, New Zealand, British, Newfoundland, French and Turkish forces. Just as the Battle at Vimy Ridge was a milestone that forged Canada’s identity as a nation, so too the national characters of Australia and New Zealand were forged in battle, by their displays of honour, commitment and sacrifice. In the end, the Turkish forces of the Ottoman Empire repelled the invasion, and a mutual respect has been fostered over the years. This is summed up in the words of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, a commander at Gallipoli and the first President of the New Republic of Turkey, thereafter, when he inscribed on a plaque at ANZAC Cove: "Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives. You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore, rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace, after having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well." After an ANZAC Gala last week, the core event is the ANZAC Day Dawn Service and Community Breakfast at Sir Winston Churchill Square , where members of the local Australian, New Zealand and Turkish communities come together at 6:30 AM to remember and thank. There was also a lot of support from the Loyal Edmonton Regiment, The Lord Strathconas Horse (Royal Canadians) and the First Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. It was a cold morning, but it was a fitting tribute to courage. I was honoured to attend and speak on behalf of the Government of Canada, and especially to meet Mrs. Patricia Austin, the daughter of an Australian soldier who fought at Gallipoli.

A recent Throwback Thursday about a Belgian F-104 Starfighter doing a touch-and-go landing followed by a dirty roll followed by another touch-and-go landing rekindled memories of my own time as part of the CF-104 Air Demonstration Team called the “Deadeye Zips.” The CF-104 had a number of nicknames, among them the “Zip”, because of its extreme speed and acceleration capability. I joined the team for 1977 with John Bagshaw (“Baggy”) as “Zip Lead” with myself (“Hawnski”) as “Zip 2” and Captain Dave Bligh (“Bligge”) as “Zip 3”. That summer with dozens of practices and eleven airshows was about the most fun this aviator has ever had around jets. Most trips were only about 0.6 hours of aerodynamic violence, but there was a lot of sweat packed into those short trips. For part of the year, we were non-aerobatic, but with LOTS of speed and noise. That changed halfway through the season, and we incorporated rolling manoeuvres and a couple of distinctive touches. On one of his solo passes, “Baggy” performed the spectacular double touch-and-go manoeuvre. Our show started with an entry in line-abreast with “Bligge” peeling off at show centre for a tight 360 while “Baggy” and I repositioned for a mirror knife-edge pass. The latter consisted of approaching in close line-abreast, pulling to about 10 degrees nose-up, rolling towards each other and performing canopy-to-canopy knife-edge passes. That involved a lot of forward-stick and top-rudder, with me using rudder to try to stay in formation. I say, “try to stay” in formation, because sometimes it worked better than others. Occasionally, we looked like opposing windshield wipers, but it was always entertaining; and, if asked – “that is exactly what we were trying to do”. All-in-all, we had more fun in the air and on the ground than should be allowed.

Now here's couple of cool shots of the RCAF Snowbirds. The first one is Sunset Ceremony at Royal Roads University in Victoria for the 75th Anniversary of Royal Roads Military College, which was closed in 1995. Second one is during the Prince of Wales Burst over CFB Comox. Pics are from a special belly camera on Snowbird Lead. You should try to see them at one of their 40 events across Canada this summer.

I enjoyed the 9th Annual Air Force Day on the Hill with many current and former colleagues from the Royal Canadian Air Force. LGen Yvan Blondin, Commander of the RCAF had well-deserved high praise for all members of the RCAF and Minister of National Defence Hon. Jason Kenney also highlighted many of their accomplishments and contributions to our nation’s security and to international well-being. I was very happy to present a cheque for $11,000 to BGen (Ret) Bill Buckham on behalf of the RCAF Association of Canada. The generous contribution will go towards the restoration and display of Lancaster KB882 from its current location at Edmundston, NB to the Alberta Aviation Museum in Edmonton. I also was able to announce that CN had made the very generous contribution, in-kind, of three flat cars to carry KB882 to its new home. I was further honoured to receive from the RCAFA a beautiful limited edition print of a Halifax bomber during WW2, and which was signed by Air Chief Marshall Sir Arthur “Bomber” Harris, who orchestrated the bombing campaign against Nazi Germany. The only downer of the evening was that, while I am #BelowTheLine, I couldn’t enjoy any beverage other than tap water and had to forego all the delicious food.
