It was a beautiful Edmonton day to put in 5K with 1700 great folks in support of the cause to find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. In many ways, MS is Canada's disease, as we have the highest incidence in the world; and Alberta has one of the highest incidence in Canada. This year a record number of Edmontonians turned out to the Jayman Edmonton Walk to Cure MS. Millions of dollars have been raised over the 25 years of this event, and I've been proud to walk with them for the past 7 years.

Had a fun, if somewhat painful, time at the TrackTown Canada kickoff, where I highlighted significant funding from the Government of Canada for major track and field events taking place in Edmonton this summer and for the long-term goal of continuing to “Own the Podium”. An added (somewhat painful) feature of the day was a TrackTown Canada Mini-Meet, where 16 of us were divided into teams of four each to compete in four events – 100 meter hurdles, long jump, shot put and javelin. My track and field days are a long time in the past and, if the Olympic mantra is “higher, faster, stronger”, I think I represented the “lower, slower, weaker ….. and older end of the spectrum. But it was all great fun and our team actually took home the Gold Trophy; my good luck was landing with a bunch of actual athletes. There will be world-class athletes coming to Edmonton all summer and you should try to catch some of the action.

What a great way to spend Victoria Day! Judy and I went out to Josephburg to meet old friend Ed McDonald, Air Canada pilot and ex-RCAF. Ed has a few aircraft, including an L-39 ZA, which is a Czech-built jet trainer and light attack aircraft from the Cold War era. It is a beautiful little machine that flies like a combination Tutor and T-33, but more like a Tutor. When you look at the aircraft, you can see that the designer was influenced by the A-4 Skyhawk (back end) and F-5 Freedom Fighter (front end). Judy took the first hop in the back seat and enjoyed her high-speed tour around the area. I then got my turn and really enjoyed about 40 minutes of aerobatics, low level work, a few low passes back at the “patch”, and just generally “slipping the surly bonds of earth” and reliving a taste of what was the best job I will ever have. Can’t thank Ed enough for his generosity and for giving up the stick.

I was an interested spectator at an announcement by Minister of Health Hon. Rona Ambrose, where she addressed a new program to combat the abuse of prescription drugs. There are many effective drugs that are prescribed legitimately, but can be abused with disastrous results. People should be very careful to keep prescription medication safe from abuse and take back any unused medication to their local drug store. This picture is Minister Ambrose at the podium with other stakeholders (l-r) RCMP Chief Superintendent George Stephenson, Cecilia Bloxom from Canadian Patient Safety Institute, Chief Marcel Weasel Head from Blood First Nation and Dr. Gregory Taylor, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer.

Attended the opening ceremonies and gala for the Bi-Annual Convention of the Polish Combatants Association, which is comprised of Veterans of the Polish Army, many of whom are World War II Veterans. The Ambassador of Poland to Canada, His Excellency Marcin Bosacki and Poland’s Minister of War Veterans and Victims of Oppression Jan Stanislaw Ciechanowski were also on hand to bring greetings and award medals from the Government of Poland and other Polish Veterans organizations. We were also joined by Consul General of Poland in Canada Krzysztof Olendzki and the Polish Military Attache to Canada. I laid a little of my best Polish on the crowd and enjoyed a variety of Polish cultural performances. The bonds between Canada and Poland are deep and strong and well over a million Canadians have Polish lineage.

In 2014, the Embassy of France awarded the Légion d’honneur to more than 600 Canadian Veterans who served in the campaign to liberate France. I am pleased to inform you that the Government of France has extended the nomination deadline for the Légion d’honneur to July 31, 2015. The Department of Veterans Affairs would like to invite you to participate in the nomination of candidates for this prestigious decoration. You will find a French Legion of Honour Nomination Form_2 at this link ( http://rcafassociation.ca/about-us/governance/national-executive-council-nec-directors-and-officers/chief-executive-officers-daily-report/ ), and a Nomination-Letter-Embassy-of-France.pdf describing the extension deadline of the Légion d’honneur nominations. With respect to all, I think it’s time that we moved on, and I’ll try. My intention in commenting on Bill C-51 was not to question the loyalty or values of any particular company or group of companies in Canada. My overall intention was simply to emphasize that we all have roles and responsibilities in addressing the threats to Canada, some of which we have no direct experience with, as a population. There are always strong emotions and opinions on both sides of any difficult issue; and I could have chosen my words more carefully. For that, I apologize.
