There is an interesting webinar coming up tomorrow from The Conference Board of Canada titled: Reducing GHG Emissions in Canada’s Road Transportation Sector: A Long, Hard Road to 2050. It will be interesting to see what Len Coad manages to reveal about the combined potential of cycling, walking and mass transit. http://www.conferenceboard.ca/e-library/abstract.aspx?did=7627&utm_source=dmjmp&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ECGHG1&mkt_tok=3RkMMJWWfF9wsRonsq3Lcu%2FhmjTEU5z17O0oUaC%2BlMI%2F0ER3fOvrPUfGjI4DTspkPa%2BTFAwTG5toziV8R7DMKM1l3dMQXRLr cc: Catherine McKenna Marc Garneau

High level meetings between US and Canadian officials happen pretty regularly, but even by our exceptional standards the last 36 hours or so have been pretty impressive! First, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx welcomed Canada's Minister of Transportation, Marc Garneau, to Washington for discussions on security, safety and cross-border travel. Then this morning on the outskirts of the NATO meetings in Brussels, U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Secretary of Defense Ash Carter had his first meeting with the Canadian Armed Forces' Minister of of National Defence Harjit Sajjan. And finally, late this afternoon, United States Ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman -- who's already in #Winnipeg for the beginning of the North American Energy Ministerial -- met one-on-one with Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger to talk about the extensive trade relationship between the Premier's province and the midwest United States. Like we said: that's a pretty impressive day and a half! (Photos courtesy Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and Connect2Canada / Lien Canada)

Imagine how surprised I was today when the Minister of Transport stood up in the House of Commons and said the Conservative Party has failed Albertans. I've lived in Alberta my entire life, and this couldn't be further from the truth; this isn't what I've been hearing from my family, friends and neighbours. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Minister Marc Garneau and his service to Canada, but this is just ridiculous rhetoric, particularly from someone who is not from Alberta. Minister Garneau also said that his government is going to take an "intelligent, scientifically-based approach" to developing our economy (and natural resources, of course), yet when the Prime Minister was asked if his Cabinet would support Energy East if it makes it through the thorough National Energy Board approval process, he couldn't give a straight answer. Isn't an "intelligent, scientifically-based approach" the purpose of the NEB process?

Having flown my first mission on the #Challenger, this day brings back a deep sense of pain and sorrow. On this sad anniversary, I remember my colleagues Dick Scobee, Christa McAuliffe, Michael Smith, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka and Gregory Jarvis --- Ayant fait mon premier vol spatial à bord du #Challenger, la journée d’aujourd’hui ravive la peine et la douleur. En ce triste anniversaire, je pense à mes collègues Dick Scobee, Christa McAuliffe, Michael Smith, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka and Gregory Jarvis
