FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 17, 2013 STATEMENT BY OFFICIAL OPPOSITION LGTB CRITIC RANDALL GARRISON (ESQUIMALT–JUAN DE FUCA) ON INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA It was only 23 years ago today that homosexuality was removed from the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Classification of Diseases. Today, on the International Day Against Homophobia, New Democrats are proud to stand in solidarity with the LGBT(Q) community here at home and abroad as we renew our commitment to speaking out against discrimination, prejudice and violence. Although we’ve made great strides in Canada, there is still much work to be done to eliminate the hostility and ostracism that members of the LGBT(Q) community face in this country and around the world. In many countries, being homosexual is sadly still a crime and rates of cyberhomophobia are on the rise. New Democrats are proud of our record of recognizing the right of every Canadian to live free from fear of persecution regardless of sexual orientation or gender expression. NDP Leader Tom Mulcair has been a strong advocate for gay and transgender rights, working to strengthen Quebec Charter protections for gays and lesbians. Svend Robinson, Canada’s first openly gay MP, introduced a bill that extended hate crimes protection to gays and lesbians. In March, the NDP bill to make violence against transgender Canadians a hate crime passed in the House of Commons. New Democrats are committed to ensuring equality, diversity and understanding among all people. We will continue to work towards the day when the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and transsexual people are recognized around the world—and the simple act of being who you are is no longer considered “brave.” -30-

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 16, 2013 NDP: BLOOD FOR PROFIT MISTAKES MUST NOT BE REPEATED TORONTO – The NDP is deeply concerned that by allowing for-profit plasma clinics the federal government risks repeating mistakes that led to one of Canada’s worst ever preventable public health disasters. “There is no public health benefit to opening the clinics. Just 25 years ago 20,000 people were infected with diseases like HIV and hepatitis C from tainted blood,” said NDP MP Matthew Kellway (Beaches – East York). “It’s appalling that after all that pain, this government seems ready to green light a plasma-for-profit scheme with all its potential risks. Our health system is not the place for the government’s free-marketeering experimentation.” Among the principal recommendations of the Krever Inquiry into the tainted blood scandal was that blood and plasma donors should not be paid for their donations. As there is currently no shortage of plasma for transfusions in Canada, this private scheme provides no apparent public health benefits. Instead, it poses unknown risks and threatens Canada’s voluntary blood donation system. “After the last scandal the government promised the precautionary principles would apply to our blood system,” said NDP MPP France Gélinas. “We need to give Ontarians a real say about this policy change before the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care ever considers granting the pay-for-plasma lab an operating license.” – 30 –

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 14, 2013 TOM MULCAIR IN TORONTO TO KICK OFF THE NDP’S NATIONAL CONSULTATION WITH CITIES OTTAWA – Leader of the Official Opposition and Canada's New Democrats Tom Mulcair is in Toronto on Wednesday to kick-off the NDP's national consultation with cities. He will be listening to the concerns of Canadians and outlining what New Democrats would do differently as government. Mr. Mulcair will be joined at his press conference with NDP MPs Craig Scott (Toronto – Danforth), Rathika Sitsabaiesan (Scarborough – Rouge River), Andrew Cash (Davenport), Matthew Kellway (Beaches – East York) and Olivia Chow (Trinity – Spadina). A major focus of these consultations will be engaging the many different cultural communities that make up our cities. Mr. Mulcair will be speaking to the challenges facing immigrants, addressing issues like family reunification and the recognition of foreign credentials. Unlike the Conservative government's focus on precarious service sector jobs, Mr. Mulcair will show how an NDP government would make their priority creating good paying jobs that can support a family.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 14, 2013 FEDERAL LEADERSHIP OVERDUE ON LONG-TERM CARE: NDP OTTAWA – With a recent Toronto hospice closure highlighting the critical state of palliative and long-term care, the NDP is urging the federal government to address the lack of resources and coordination for this type of care. “This critical shortage of beds and lack of funding for palliative care is a direct result of the Conservative government’s failure to make health care for Canadians a priority,” said NDP Health critic Libby Davies (Vancouver East). “Instead of hiding in Ottawa, the Health minister should work with the provinces to ensure that Canadians get the essential health services they need.” Residential hospices provide an important option for Canadians with terminal illness who need 24-hour medical care. Perram House was one of only three residential hospices in Toronto. Its closure means there are now just twenty hospice beds for a city of 2.6 million people. And even though hospice care is less costly than staying in hospital, it receives limited government funding and these facilities must rely on their own fundraising efforts to stay open. “This is yet another example of Conservatives walking away from their responsibilities and passing the burden of funding important services to the provinces and territories,” said NDP MP Matthew Kellway (Beaches – East York). “Every person deserves to die with dignity and our first class health system should make that possible.” » – 30 –

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 13, 2013 NEW DEMOCRATS WELCOME THE FORMATION OF GARMENT WORKERS’ UNION IN WAKE OF BANGLADESH DISASTER MONTREAL – New Democrats welcomed the recent measures adopted by the government of Bangladesh today to allow garment workers to unionize. “The NDP supports the formation of a union so that employees can negotiate safer working conditions while improving their wages,” said NDP Labour Critic Alexandre Boulerice (Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie). “New Democrats also welcome the change in Bangladesh Labour Act which now allows union affiliations.” More than 1,100 people were killed when the Rana Plaza building near the capital of Bangladesh collapsed. The garment industry generates more than $ 20 billion in Bangladesh and it supplies retailers from around the world including Canada. Thanks to an NDP motion, the Foreign Affairs Committee will conduct a study of corporate activities in the developing world in the wake of the factory collapse in Bangladesh. “In the wake of Bangladesh disaster, Canadians have clearly demonstrated a desire to improve working conditions overseas,” said New Democrat Foreign Affairs Critic, Paul Dewar (Ottawa-Centre). “We all have a responsibility to encourage, facilitate, and require responsible corporate practices by Canadian companies working in developing countries.” » – 30 –

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 8, 2013 AUTONOMY OF CROWN CORPORATIONS MUST BE RESPECTED: NDP AND WORKERS OTTAWA — New Democrats and labour unions representing workers at Crown corporations have launched a campaign against sections of Bill C-60, which grant the Treasury Board sweeping powers to intervene in the terms and conditions of employment for workers and managers at Crown corporations. “Bill C-60 is yet another attack against all Canadian workers—union and non-union alike. It is a serious threat to the independence of our Crown corporations. C-60 strips key powers from the directors of corporations such as the CBC, VIA Rail and Canada Post,” said New Democrat Labour critic Alexandre Boulerice. “It is completely inappropriate that the Treasury Board would be empowered to step into a workplace and arbitrarily change the compensation of any worker without a union,” he added. “The NDP is concerned that this potential for interference will impact the ability of these corporations to retain high quality workers and effectively serve Canadians.” Boulerice was accompanied by representatives of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), the Syndicat des communications de Radio-Canada (SCRC), the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA). “Together, we will fight against this unprecedented assault on the autonomy of Crown corporations. As a first step, we are moving to divide this section of C-60. We are also launching a petition and a grassroots campaign,” concluded Boulerice. -30-

Very pleased to be able to "second" this important bill to protect the Don River - OTTAWA - Today, Craig Scott, MP for Toronto-Danforth, tabled a bill to protect the Don River. The bill, seconded by fellow Toronto NDP MPs Matthew Kellway (Beaches-East York), Olivia Chow (Trinity-Spadina) and Andrew Cash (Davenport), is part of the NDP’s campaign to reverse the gutting of the Navigable Waters Protection Act by the Conservative government. “The NDP is determined to do everything in our power to protect Canada’s lakes and rivers. And that includes the Don River, from its source 28km north of Toronto in the Oak Ridges Moraine to its Lake Ontario mouth here in our riding of Toronto-Danforth. The historic Don – and the Don Valley through which it flows – is an iconic symbol of Toronto and a valued part of our community’s history and environmental culture”, says Mr. Scott. At the demand of the oil and gas industry, the Conservatives’ budget last fall (C-45) removed protection for thousands of rivers and lakes, including the Don River, so that proposed development projects – such as pipelines – on and near most bodies of water no longer need thorough environmental assessments or public consultation before proceeding. Since 1882, the Navigable Waters Protection Act had been a central pillar of environmental protection of all of Canada’s hundreds of thousands of lakes and rivers. "The removal of the Don from protection under the Navigable Waters Act was an enormous setback to the goal of an ecologically diverse and healthy Toronto. This Private Members Bill is tabled in support of and with respect for the community organizations and hundreds of volunteers who have worked so hard for, and continue to dream of, a healthy Don River and a healthy city," says Mr. Kellway. -30-

A statement from my colleague Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet: Statement by Official Opposition Housing critic Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet (Hochelaga) on appointment of CMHC Chairman of the Board I would like to congratulate Robert P. Kelly on his appointment as Chairman of the Board of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Since its founding in 1946, the CHMC has been Canada's best tool for ensuring the confidence and stability of the housing market, while contributing to the growth of the rental and cooperative housing stock. Robert P. Kelly has extensive experience in finance, which is a major asset for monitoring of the housing market. I hope he will protect the CMHC from privatization. I also hope he will safeguard the institution's independence and transparency, at a time when the government is moving in the opposite direction. Mr. Kelly has many challenges facing him. We’re looking to see the CHMC return to its founding mission, by re-launching the construction of social housing and renewing long-term agreements to ensure the sustainability of existing stock. I wish him every success in his new duties.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 2, 2013 STATEMENT BY OFFICIAL OPPOSITION FINANCE CRITIC PEGGY NASH ON THE APPOINTMENT OF STEPHEN POLOZ AS BANK OF CANADA GOVERNOR On behalf of Canada’s New Democrats, I would like to congratulate Stephen Poloz on being selected as the new Bank of Canada governor. While managing Canada’s monetary policy and ensuring the stability of our financial system will be challenging in the face of sluggish economic growth, fiscal contraction, and high household debt, I trust that Stephen Poloz is ready to assume this responsibility. As Canada emerges from an extended economic downturn and continues to face unique challenges, our economy will require confident and purposeful stewardship. I wish Stephen Poloz much success in this new role. -30-
