Hi everybody! As some of you may know, the Calgary-Greenway by-election is coming up quickly (March 22nd, which is crazy), and the campaign needs all the help we can get! We need outside and inside scrutineers, as well as phoners and drivers, to help out with our Election Day "Get Out The Vote" efforts. Roop Rai is a young, fantastic, female candidate, who has been working tirelessly on her campaign. Despite being criticized for being a young woman, she continues to fight to be elected in Greenway, and it shows in the extremely high level of support she is receiving. Despite this support, WE STILL NEED EVERYONE TO COME OUT AND HELP WITH WHAT THEY CAN, ESPECIALLY ON ELECTION DAY. The only way we can get another strong, young MLA elected is through the efforts of our lovely volunteers. Live outside of Calgary? No problem! Rides AND housing can be arranged for FREE! How neat is that? If you are interested in helping out, please email me ASAP at gbeckerndp@gmail.com or send me a message via Messenger. Even if you can only help out for a few hours, anything is very, very much appreciated. :) Thanks, Georgia Irene Becker Co-Chair, NDYA

Well, with our convention over, our new executive elected, and our priorities re-evaluated, we have finally begun work on reconstructing and updating the NDYA. After only a day of being elected, our executive has already begun work on planning our upcoming meeting, which is scheduled for later this week, as well as revitalizing our social media efforts, as promised. If you aren’t already following our Twitter, @NDYA, it is a great place to find more info about what is going on in the NDYA. We are also happy to announce that our Instagram, @NDYAlberta, is now up and running. A special thanks to Hayley Brown, who has updated our extremely out of date website. It is now, finally, a reliable source for information. If you have any feedback for us about convention, or any suggestions of what we should be doing next, please do not hesitate to contact us at ndyalberta@gmail.com, and one of our lovely new executive members will happy to respond. Sincerely, Georgia Becker and Kelsey Fortier Co-chairs https://twitter.com/ndya https://www.instagram.com/ndyalberta/

The Alberta government is resurrecting a program that helped employers hire students for summer jobs. "This is an opportunity to get them into the work force to get job exposure as well as career-related job experience," said Premier Rachel Notley. "It's absolutely fundamental to helping them get on their way." The Summer Temporary Employment Program or STEP was cut by the previous Progressive Conservative government in March 2013.

Many young Albertans can't remember Ralph Klein paying off the debt. We can only remember an Alberta with crumbling infrastructure and worsening services. As Joe Ceci says "We believe Albertans want their services, their hospitals, their schools, their human services protected." Now we will remember a government standing up for Albertans and protecting our values.

Our final youth candidate in our showcase is Michael Connolly. He is your Alberta's NDP candidate in Calgary-Hawkwood. Born and raised in Calgary, Michael attended the University of Ottawa to pursue studies in history and political science. While in Ottawa, Michael gained valuable experience by interning in the parliamentary office of another young New Democrat, Manitoba MP Niki Ashton. There, he helped organize the NDP Women's Forum that brought young women leaders from all over Canada together to build solutions to inequality and discrimination. Michael will work to create good, middle-class jobs through hiring incentives for small businesses, advocate for safe spaces for minority and vulnerable students as well as adequate resourcing for public education, and modernize--not privatize--public health care to improve frontline services. Michael is a passionate young leader who understands Calgary and is ready to deliver the change we deserve in the Legislature. https://www.facebook.com/MichaelConnollyNDP

Our next youth candidate in the showcase is Deborah Drever. She is the Alberta's NDP candidate in Calgary-Bow. Deborah Drever was born and raised in Calgary, and is proud to still call it home. She is currently attending Mount Royal University working towards a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. She currently lives with her Grandmother because of the high cost of housing in Calgary, and directly understands the pressure seniors and students are under to make ends meet in a city that is increasingly more expensive to live and work in. Throughout university she has been actively involved in human rights activism - working with the young feminist C.U.L.T. (Calgary Underground Ladies Team) collective, and actively joining with feminists and allies to change the culture within Calgary’s punk and metal scenes. Deborah is ready for a better Alberta - an Alberta that responds to the needs of all Albertans and a government that listens to Albertans. For too long Corporations have reaped the rewards of our resources. It is time to prioritize health care, affordance post-secondary education and ensuring quality classrooms. Deborah learned the power and value of community and volunteerism at an early age. She has volunteered at various not for profit organizations around Calgary since the age of 8. Some of which include The Calgary Folk Music Festival, and Global Fest International Fireworks and Multicultural Event. She has also canvassed for Heart and Stoke, diabetes, and cancer foundations. https://www.facebook.com/DeborahforCalgaryBow?pnref=story

Thomas Dang was born in Edmonton and has both lived and grown up there his entire life. He is currently at the University of Alberta pursuing a degree in Computing Science Honours. While not a common stream to enter politics, he sees it as a unique opportunity to bring a different outlook to the political spectrum. Thomas has been becoming more and more involved in provincial politics, though is taking his first foray into electoral politics. As a student, he is extremely interested in issues surrounding post secondary education; though his advocacy and activities extend to many other topics such as healthcare and grade school education. As a young candidate and someone being relatively new to the game, Thomas hopes to bring a desperately needed fresh perspective to Alberta politics. It’s time for a change in Alberta, and he hopes to be able to bring that about in a positive manner. https://www.facebook.com/ThomasDangAB?fref=ts

With the election right around the corner, we will be showcasing our fantastic youth candidates. First up, we have Jon Carson. He is running to be your candidate in Edmonton-Meadowlark. Jon Carson has lived in Meadowlark for over 12 years and understands the importance of the many amenities in the area. Home to West Edmonton Mall and the Misericordia hospital, Meadowlark is a bustling community, a well established part of Edmonton with many schools, businesses, and public facilities. Growing up and going to school in this community has given him the opportunity to learn some of the challenges that these neighborhoods face. Jon graduated from the NAIT - Radio and Television Broadcasting program in 2012, studying journalism, law and ethics, and mass communication. While attending he hosted radio shows discussing government policy and fundraised for local charities. More recently he became an electrician and joined IBEW 424. His partner of 8 years has a degree in environmental management and a diploma in environmental sciences. Jon believes communities should have more say in government policy and will work with his community to ensure everyones opinion is considered. He will fight for accountability and transparency in the legislature. Come out and show your support for Jon this Saturday. https://www.facebook.com/events/861354197256192/
