nsnChronicle Herald: Since the 1970s, there’s been a strict separation of fleets and quotas on the East Coast enforced by two policies — commonly called the fleet separation and owner/operator policies. Fleet separation essentially means processors and owners of offshore quotas that require large capital-intensive fishing vessels aren’t allowed to own quotas reserved for inshore vessels under 20 metres. The policies are the basis for management of the East Coast fishery and are vehemently defended by inshore associations every time Fisheries and Oceans Canada consults on the industry’s future. They also don’t exist anywhere else in Canada. http://thechronicleherald.ca/novascotia/81161-fishermen-fear-future-big-corporations-chargeMay 16, 2012 5:37 am | Nova Scotia, Manicouagan
nsnChronicle Herald: The majority Conservatives are planning changes to the system around the types and locations of jobs people collecting employment insurance benefits would have to take. The government’s 430-page budget bill allows for new definitions of “suitable employment” and the “reasonable and customary effort” that should be used to get such a job. The government has to release details on what the new definitions will be and what they will mean to people collecting benefits. http://thechronicleherald.ca/novascotia/96516-dexter-to-feds-careful-with-eiMay 16, 2012 5:35 am | Nova Scotia, Manicouagan

nsnThe government of Nova Scotia has set a target to replace 10% of the province’s current power supply with tidal energy over the next decade and beyond. The provincial Energy Department released a marine energy plan Tuesday that is aiming for 300 megawatts of power to be generated from tidal energy by around 2020. Tidal energy experiments in the Bay of Fundy are part of the province’s aggressive bid to generate 40% of its electricity from renewable resources by that same year. The strategy was based on 27 recommendations made by Bob Fournier, who was hired by the province last fall to lead consultations on the drafting of marine renewable energy legislation. http://business.financialpost.com/2012/05/15/nova-scotia-targets-10-of-power-from-tidal-energy/?__lsa=23586781May 15, 2012 1:07 pm | Nova Scotia, Manicouagan
nsnCBC: Nova Scotia's health minister says a plan to chop ambulance fees for some Nova Scotians will cost an extra $2 million but it will help those who need it the most. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/story/2012/05/14/ns-ambulance-fees.htmlMay 15, 2012 1:05 pm | Nova Scotia, Manicouagan
nsnFournier made 27 recommendations aimed at helping the province develop legislation to oversee the province’s marine renewable energy sector. The province accepted all of Fournier’s suggestions and includes them in the strategy, which covers research, development and regulation of the emerging industry over the next five to 10 years. The energy minister said legislation and related regulations will be ready no later than next spring. But further efforts to develop tidal energy will continue this year. Parker said his department will ask the province’s Utility and Review Board later this year to begin the process of setting a rate, or feed-in tariff, for the companies working on development projects in the Bay of Fundy. http://thechronicleherald.ca/business/96148-tapping-into-tidal-energyMay 15, 2012 8:21 am | Nova Scotia, Manicouagan
nsn“For some Nova Scotians, the cost associated with using this service has caused them to second-guess themselves in an emergency.” As of July 1, residents of long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes and residential care facilities, who need an ambulance will pay $50 instead of the current $134.52, MacDonald said during an announcement at an Emergency Health Services paramedic base in Burnside. http://thechronicleherald.ca/novascotia/96113-ambulance-fees-cut-for-most-vulnerableMay 15, 2012 8:01 am | Nova Scotia, Manicouagan
nsnBeginning July 1, Nova Scotians living in licensed long-term care facilities or with reduced mobility will benefit from a reduction in ambulance fees. People with low incomes will also be eligible for lower ambulance fees, beginning Sept. 1. “ Lower, fairer ambulance fees for seniors and low-income families was the right thing to do. The province is making health care more affordable for the most vulnerable citizens." http://gov.ns.ca/news/smr/2012-05-14-Ambulance-Fees/May 14, 2012 1:10 pm | Nova Scotia, Manicouagan
nsnNova Scotia has taken another step towards turning its abundant ocean energy resources into an affordable supply of clean, renewable electricity. “ It represents a provincial commitment to cleaner and made-in-Nova Scotia energy solutions. nsnA note to members from Health Minister Maureen MacDonald: Earlier this week I announced another important step — the NDP’s Physician Resource Plan — that will help our NDP government reshape the physician workforce over time to better meet the needs of Nova Scotians and deliver better care sooner in all regions of the province. It will allow us to take a provincial approach to plan and manage physician resources, and it provides us with a framework so that the province can train, recruit and retain the right mix of doctors for Nova Scotia. nsnThe province will work to increase access to primary care, improve physician recruitment and retention, provide more accurate and reliable information to patients and influence the number and type of doctors trained. "It is clear that change is needed," said Ms. MacDonald. "Government now has a tool to help reshape the province's physician workforce over the next several years to better meet the needs of Nova Scotians across the province." The province's initial actions include commitments to: -- invest in four new collaborative primary care teams this year in communities of need and provide additional support to existing teams -- provide additional incentives for doctors practicing in communities of need -- work with Dalhousie University's medical school to increase the number of family doctors trained in Nova Scotia -- strengthen efforts to recruit and retain physicians where they are needed most http://gov.ns.ca/news/details.asp?id=20120509001May 09, 2012 2:36 pm | Nova Scotia, Manicouagan
