Friends— We have a very special community in Parkdale—High Park. Active. Engaged. Compassionate. It has been such an honour to serve as your Member of Parliament and I am so proud of what we accomplished together. Thank you for your support and your trust. Please join me in congratulating Arif Virani on his election, and congratulations to the other candidates who put their name forward. Running for public office isn’t easy—especially when the campaign was as long as this one—but each candidate demonstrated a commitment and desire to serve. Thank you to the dedicated people who gave their time, effort, money, and energy to my campaign. It was a true marathon, and your love and encouragement kept me going. We hear all too often that Canadians are disaffected from politics—especially young people. But I saw more new, young faces on this campaign than on any before it. That gives me so much hope for the future. At a time when the gap continues to grow between the very wealthy and the rest, when companies use their massive tax cuts to send jobs overseas, when we lag behind on environmental leadership, Canada needs strong voices like yours who know another way is possible. New Democrats are known for our commitment to social justice, to environmental sustainability, and to greater economic equality. We are steadfast in our convictions and they are what drive us in good times and in bad. I call on you to continue what we've started together. Yours, Peggy

"Ask any group of Canadians to put up their hands if they think it’s improper for a senior campaign official to be advising oil-pipeline companies on how to get in quickly with a new government to get what they want – at the very same time as they’re advising the guy they expect will lead that new government a week later. All hands will be in the air. It’s not a complex ethical conundrum." Canadians deserve better.

Thanks to the International Fund for Animal Welfare - IFAW for their endorsement. I was proud to introduce a private member's bill to strengthen federal animal cruelty law and close the loopholes that too often allow those who abuse animals to escape penalty. More than 18,000 Canadians signed petitions in support of the bill.

In many Toronto ridings, the clear choice is between a Liberal and an NDPer; that's an easy call. I'd love to see a new Ottawa, not just with returning NDP pros, but other fresh party faces."

"What the NDP has done is to set ambitious targets; targets that are in keeping with what is being done in the European Union and what the UN says is acceptable. So, a 34 per cent (carbon dioxide) reduction targets (below 1990 levels by 2025) are good targets. That is the first step, because you need to know where you are going. I can't stress that enough. To just hope, and wish, and cross our fingers isn't going to work. So, I'll take a moment to distinguish our position from that of the Liberals. We don't actually know what their targets are; they haven't set targets. We have targets and we've put them in legislation, the Climate Change Accountability Act, first introduced (in Parliament) by Jack Layton. That means that if Tom Mulcair is elected Prime Minister he has a mandate on climate change. We elected him with a mandate to go to the international climate change talks in Paris in November (the United Nations Conference of the Parties, a.k.a., COP-21) to say, 'Canada's back, here are our targets, they are ambitious, and we can do this.'"

I believe everyone's vote matters. That's why I want to make this the last unfair election. Of the major parties, only the NDP has committed to bringing in proportional representation, and we'll do so in our first term as government. Fair Vote Canada congratulated Tom Mulcair "for taking this bold position and agree with him that only proportional representation will Make Every Vote Count." After ten long years of Harper government, voting is harder than ever. The Conservatives support the unfair status quo. The Liberals won't commit to proportional representation—Justin Trudeau even voted against in Parliament. Let's make every vote count. Make your plan to vote here: http://www.ndp.ca/make-a-plan

This weekend, vote for the environment in the advance polls. Polling stations are open from noon to 8 pm today and tomorrow. Find your polling station here: http://www.ndp.ca/where-to-vote Under Stephen Harper, Canada’s climate record has lacked leadership and been criticized by the United Nations for falling behind many other countries. After ten years of Conservative government, Canada has abandoned its environmental obligations and was the first country to pull out of Kyoto. New Democrats have a concrete plan to reduce emissions by 34 per cent from 1990 levels by 2025. Yesterday, the Liberals announced they won't commit to a target. Trudeau said Canada doesn't need "ambitious political numbers." That's not change. That's more of the same. Our full platform is out, and I'm proud of Tom Mulcair and the NDP's vision for a stronger, greener, fairer Canada. This is a historic opportunity to get our country back on track and work together on issues that will make life better for all Canadians. Among our many progressive commitments, an NDP government will: - create a universal affordable childcare program and open 100,000 new spaces in the first year; - get Toronto moving and reduce commute times with a major investment in public transit; - work towards universal drug coverage and reduce costs by 30%; - lift 200,000 seniors out of poverty; - strengthen public healthcare and hire more doctors and nurses; - take action on climate change, making big polluters pay; - begin phasing out interest on federal student loans; - introduce proportional representation for fairer elections; - restore the retirement age to 65 and boost pensions; - grow the economy by investing in green innovation and tech; and - repeal Bill C-51 and Bill C-24. Ours is an ambitious but achievable plan. As an old friend of mine always said, "don't let them tell you it can't be done." Read the full platform at http://www.ndp.ca/platform
