Kathleen Wynne and her Liberal government dug in their heels and showed that they’re determined to take a partisan approach to writing election rules. The laws that govern our democracy should be built to last, not based on the whims of any one political party. The Premier is setting a dangerous precedent that any majority government can change Ontario’s election laws whenever and however they feel like it. That’s the wrong decision, one that will have far-reaching and long-lasting consequences.

Closing enrolment without notice to families and students for provincial and demonstration schools was callous and inappropriate. Now, with hundreds of people on the lawn of the Legislature this afternoon, the Liberal government must make a commitment to keep demonstration and provincial schools open permanently.

I entered today’s meeting feeling hopeful that the leaders would come together to agree on a transparent process on how we move forward on the important issue of how political parties are funded and elections are conducted. I, however, left disappointed as it became clear in the meeting that only two leaders, myself and Mr. Brown, arrived ready to discuss a process that would give Ontarians the confidence they deserve that the deck isn’t stacked in the Premier’s favour. I’m concerned that the Premier seems to think that the leaders of Ontario’s three largest political parties, meeting behind closed doors today, passes for being consultative, inclusive and transparent. Ontarians know better. I will continue to push for a process that takes the politics out, and puts Ontarians first.

Ontarians need to know that government decisions in our province are not influenced of big money. That's why I'm calling on government to appoint Ontario’s Chief Electoral Officer to lead a process to reform election campaign donations and strengthen our democracy. I'm disappointed the Premier has decided this process should be led by the Liberal party. These reforms shouldn’t be up to one political party, or one political leader. These reforms must involve input from the public in a process that's open, transparent and has the support of Ontarians.

Seniors will be relieved to hear that the cost of their drugs won’t be increasing this summer, as the Premier’s budget proposed. This is a victory for seniors across Ontario. I want to thank the thousands of seniors who have spoken out on this issue and the more than eighty organizations who have written to the Premier to oppose her plan to increase drug costs. It’s unfortunate that it takes an outcry from worried seniors and their families for the Premier to admit that she’s made a mistake. If the Liberals try to increase seniors’ drug costs in the future, they should know that New Democrats will always stand with Ontario’s seniors in our support for affordable prescription drugs and for the principle of universal access, which is at the heart of our health care system.

When 1 in 4 women experience sexual assault or harassment and yet only 10% report it we need to think about how we support women. It's the role of elected representatives to look at what's happening, to closely examine where our system fails, and determine if changes are necessary. Please watch, share and leave your thoughts below. Thank you.

Today, 1 in 4 women experience sexual assault or harassment and yet only 10% report it. It’s the fear of not being believed that stops women from coming forward. I believe survivors… I also believe that we need to do better. Not only do we need to change the culture, we need to think about whether this trial is an opportunity to look at whether the justice system provides the kind of protections women need to feel safe to come forward. We must all work together to create a safe space where survivors can feel comfortable coming forward and have access to the support services they need.

On behalf of the Ontario NDP, wishing a happy Purim to everyone celebrating! Chag Purim Sameach! Purim is a reminder of the strength of the human spirit, and the will to survive in the face of persecution, as is told in the reading of the Megillah at the start of this holiday: the story of Queen Esther and her uncle Mordecai who saved the Jewish people of Ancient Persia. As members of the Jewish community join with family and friends to share a meal, and celebrate the occasion with noisemakers, costumes and the generosity of giving, we affirm our commitment and our shared responsibility to building a world free of discrimination and hatred in all its forms.

Following my trip to northwestern Ontario where I met with Grand Chief Fiddler, Deputy Grand Chief Fox and other leaders from NAN communities, today I called on the Liberal government to fix the health crisis facing First Nations communities across the north. Sioux Lookout has the highest rate of rheumatic fever in the world—a treatable, preventable yet deadly illness if not acted on. In fact, two four-year-old children have died from this preventable illness in the last two years. On my trip I heard from Chief Cutfeet about how few in his community have regular access to doctors, nurses or specialists for diseases such as diabetes, which is rampant throughout the NAN territories. Why, in 2016, has the Liberal government failed to address this intolerable situation? Three weeks ago, the Nishnawbe Aski Nation declared a health care state of emergency in this province. They’re reeling from endemic suicides; living in poor, crowded housing conditions; and their communities have undrinkable water. None of these problems are new. They have existed for decades. Will this Premier act today to address the dire health crisis in Sioux Lookout, in the region and across the NAN territories?

Growing inequality, persistent discrimination, and systemic racism continue to shape the lives of far too many people across the globe, and right here in our province. Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination I’m proud to affirm the Ontario NDP’s commitment to end racism, in all its forms. Most recently, Ontario’s New Democrats joined leaders and activists in communities across this province to call for the establishment an Anti-Racism office in Ontario. By working together, we pushed the government to take an important step forward to tackle systemic racism in our province. Each of us has a responsibility to fight racial discrimination, and together, we can build an Ontario where everyone succeeds, and no one is left behind!
