October is breast cancer awareness month and I’m wearing my Boobscarf in support of research. This fun fundraiser comes from Manitoulin Island’s Barbara Baker whose company, $umthing.ca, along with Blades and Things are matching donations that the proceeds from the scarfs will make. In addition to that the stitching was done compliments of KD Designs. I hope some of you are inspired to get your own Boobscarf to help fund the cure! You can check it out here: http://www.boobscarf.ca/ #breastcancerawareness

Here are some photographs from the vigil that was held at the War Memorial where MPs gathered to start their day before we returned to parliament. The Prime Minister and Party Leaders will address parliament as we return to the nation’s business.

Yesterday in Question Period I asked about the Conservative's 2012 dismantling of the Joint Preparedness Program which helped fund heavy search and rescue like the HUSAR team that was deployed in Elliot Lake. The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety had this to say - "I thank the hon. member for that question. That was indeed a tragic event that did happen. I will take that question under advisement to the minister." I let her know this was nothing to take under advisement but something to take action on! This is how they built a surplus folks. Here is a story that explains what I was asking about http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/heavy-urban-search-and-rescue-teams-face-budget-cuts-1.1156594

Here is my official statement on the Report of the Elliot Lake Commission of Inquiry: Upon the completion of the Commission of Inquiry into the collapse of the Algo Mall I would like to join many others who are offering their thanks and gratitude to Commissioner Bélanger and the members of his team who have worked so hard to present a thorough report. I want to take this opportunity to once more send my regrets to the families of Doloris Perizzolo and Lucie Aylwin. I am sure that the completion of this part of the process is as welcome for these families as it is for the community that grieved along with them and also struggled to understand how this could happen. As we go forward we must always remember that at the heart of this issue are individuals, their loved ones, and a community that has suffered great loss. I feel Justice Bélanger has maintained that perspective and his work reflects that as well. The Commission of Inquiry has allowed us to deconstruct the events that led to the collapse of the Algo Mall on June 23rd, 2012 and also points to the work that must be done to ensure an event like this is avoided in the future. It is only by making use of the recommendations in the Commission’s report that we can fully honour the lives of Doloris Perizzolo and Lucie Aylwin and make something good out of such a tragedy.

Today is National Tree Day so why not take a look at some of the good work being done in communities across the nation by Tree Canada https://treecanada.ca/en/ Qu'est-ce nettoie l'air, sert d’abri pour la faune et aide à réduire la demande d'énergie dans les villes? Les arbres, bien sûr! The Spanish Horticultural Society (SHS) celebrated a milestone 10th anniversary this weekend. Congratulations to the Society, and also to the founding members who were also recognized for their years of service. Because of the SHS the community is benefitting from the green thumbs that have embellished many surroundings in the town. The SHS is currently making preparations for the annual Halloween Haunted House and it’s really a must see! Happy anniversary to the SHS.

There were lots of activities on Friday evening in Dubreuilville at the 13th annual Strongman competition. The Polar Bear Strongman Junior competition started off the evening and there was a good crowd of people cheering on the youth who took part. The women's semi-pro saw was also an impressive competition and excitement was in the air for the crowning of Miss Strongman Challenge, which was followed by a family Glow dance. Spectators are never disappointed with what this competition weekend offers and it's unfortunate that I couldn't stay for the next two days due to other commitments in the riding, but I'm certain that all who attended truly enjoyed themselves.

It was an honour to take part in the 100th anniversary celebration of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Espanola on Tuesday. The event was part of a tour tracing the steps of the PPCLI one hundred years ago when they crossed Canada to go fight in Europe. In Espanola the soldiers honoured Pte. David Byers, 22, of Espanola, who served with the PPCLI 2nd Regiment, and Cpl. Glen Arnold McKerrow, 32, who served as a medic with 2 Field Ambulances at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa. Both of these men lost their lives while serving in Afghanistan. I took the opportunity to thank Mrs. Jane Byers for her work to ensure the tour would make its way through Northern Ontario along with Regimental Sgt. Major Brian McKennelley and countless others who were involved in the arrangements. It is true there are no words to adequately express the debt of gratitude we feel for the sacrifice these individuals have made, but dedications like this one, and the recent dedication of the Cpt. Glen Arnold Memorial Sports Field in McKerrow ensure that future generations will remember our fallen heroes and their selfless commitment. Finally, let’s thank the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry for their remarkable service over the last 100 years and wish them safe travels as they continue the relay.

Took some time to drop in and visit the annual Jocelyn Township Harvest Festival and Children’s Fall Fair this past weekend. This is truly a great family friendly event that offers a variety of activities for everyone a good selection of delicious homemade pies. I’m told that the success of this event is thanks to the generous amount of volunteers who come forward, some as young as 7. There’s something that everyone can help with. The fair draws hundreds of people each year. While there, I also met up with a few farmers from the area and had a discussion about the need to support young farmers and the growing demand for local products.

This has been an issue not only in Northern Ontario but across Canada.
