There was a great turnout last Saturday for the Joe Sarich Memorial Fun Run! It was also a great opportunity to get some exercise and to catch up with old friends who have made their way to Elliot Lake for this week's 60th anniversary celebration and the Uranium Heritage Festival.

The Blind River Youth Council invited me to their meeting last Wednesday, and I must say that it was quite evident that they are very involved in their community. I was impressed by their initiative, their level of energy and their wisdom. It is clear that these Blind River youth are leaders in their community and I can’t wait to see them take on the world.

The rain didn't dampen the spirits at the Chapleau Festival of Hope on June 20th. There were various events, activities and draws, and the kiosks were certainly impressive and unique, as you can see by the pictures. The event was organized to pay tribute to loved ones who have lost their battle with cancer, to show support to cancer survivors and to raise funds to be donated to a cancer related foundation.

It was great weather for the Elliot Lake Relay for Life that was held on June 13th. I took some time to drop by to support this great cause and even managed to get a few laps in. Cancer has touched almost all of our lives and I applaud the organizers for their commitment in hosting this annual event that brings the community together to raise awareness and funds for this worthy cause.

It is always a pleasure to attend the annual review of Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Manitoulin. This was their 11th annual review and they didn't disappoint those in attendance as they demonstrated the skills and abilities they have learned. This Corps has seen the very recent addition of a band being formed and they have learned a lot in a short period of time. Congratulations on your accomplishments and all the best as you head to summer camp!

This Saturday is the 71st anniversary of D-Day. Many Legions will be holding ceremonies to mark the occasion and I encourage you to see if there is one near you. It is true that we celebrate our veterans every year on Remembrance Day, but it is important we continue to celebrate the history of our military involvement in other ways as well - especially to mark defining moments such as those that took place in Normandy on June 6th, 1944. That day marked a turn in the war that would eventually liberate Europe from the clutches of the Nazis and ultimately, peace in Europe. This year we are also marking the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII, which gives us one more opportunity to thank the veterans from that war who are still among us.
