In solidarity with former employees of Elliot Lake mines at the rededication ceremony for the Miners Memorial. Many were on hand for moving tributes which focused on workers who lost their lives - both in the mine and from occupational illnesses - their families, the Ham Commission, as well as Occupational Health & Safety Act that came about because of the historic wildcat strike in 1974

At the announcement for ACR passenger service funding extension today with some of the stakeholders that worked so diligently on this. The hard work is just begining, but the deadline is much more reasonable. I am confident a long term solution will be found.

Great news for ACR passenger services this year. The challenge is for stakeholders to find a long-term solution. The challenge for the government is to preform due dilligence before creating crisis scenarios. This could have easily been avoided and many people were unnecessarily stressed in the process. Here's hoping for a great year for the passenger train and the businesses, property owners, and communities along the line.

Today (April 9th) is Vimy Ridge Day. We are only three years from the 100th anniversary and it remains important that we educate young Canadians about the nature of the sacrifice that was made by our country and the ultimate price paid by many patriots on the Shores of Dieppe in April of 1917. Historically, the battle marked the first time that all four Canadian divisions were assembled to operate in combat as a corps. It is seen by many as the moment that Canada acquired its reputation as a can-do country with a tough-as-nails fighting corps that is second to none. When we remember events like this it helps maintain our focus on what we are all working towards as well as what we have stood in defiance against. We must ensure that the sacrifice, pain, and suffering that were made in our name are never forgotten, and that the true meaning of freedom is always cherished. These amazing images are from Wikimedia. The memorial speaks for itself and should be known to many Canadians as the largest overseas monument for Canadian soldiers lost in the First World War. It is also featured on our modern twenty dollar bills. The black and white photos are from Canada’s digital collection. The first was taken by Jack Turner and has no additional description provided. The second shows a machine gun emplacement on the crest of Vimy Ridge and the men who drove the Germans from it during the Battle of Vimy Ridge. It has no photographer credit.

Where would we be without the great work of volunteers? They are the engines of community spirit and civic pride. April 6th – 12th is National Volunteer Week and gives us a great chance to thank those volunteers who make our lives richer. If you want to thank a special volunteer in your area, why not call the volunt-hear hotline and record a thank you message that will be shared on Soundcloud. These people give their time and energy to make the world around them better. Why not give something back? You can call 1-855-372-5077 and leave a brief thank you. Today is World Autism Day. I attended the Autism on the Hill rally with Tanner Tallon from Espanola who volunteers in my Parliamentary Office. Tanner is at the podium here between Glenn Thibeault and myself. Glenn gave a great speech at the event, by the way. The next picture is of Edmonton MP, Mike Lake and his son Jayden who are doing fantastic work raising the awareness levels on the hill for ASD by sharing their families’ experiences with autism. It is refreshing to be able to work MPs and Senators from all parties on this important issue. I also want to give a shout out to Dennis Lendrum (Espanola). I spoke with many people at the rally and reception who were familiar with his tireless work on autism. Great job Dennis!

Bon tournoi ! Good things do happen on Parliament Hill. I ran into this group from École St. Joseph in Wawa by chance. They are in Ottawa for a Franco Ontarian hockey tournament for elementary school students this weekend. I took the opportunity to give them a tour of Parliament and the Peace Tower. Wishing them all the best in the tournament.

With Colin Dobell from “Stop the Drop” who came to brief MPs on the great work that organization is doing on water level awareness for Georgian Bay. It is part of the Lake Huron/Michigan basin which reached a historic low level last winter and has been consistently lower than the other Great Lakes for years. We were joined by NDP Great Lakes Critic, Brian Masse and Nickel Belt MP, Claude Gravelle. This is such an important issue with all manner of implications for the environment, property owners, municipalities and communities on the basin, and anyone who cares about the state of our Great Lakes – which is pretty much everybody. We were encouraged by Stop the Drop’s vision, work to date, and plan to bring even more people into the discussion. That will help make the health of the Great Lakes a political priority. Wanted to say something since Saturday was World Water Day (March 22nd) UN estimates say over 1.4 billion people don’t have access to drinking water and another 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation This is even a problem in Canada where many First Nation communities have been under boil-water advisories (some for years) due to contaminated water and some municipalities have seen these advisories too. Despite that, Canada still has not implemented a national clean drinking water standard. New Democrats believe Canada needs a National Water Policy that will entrench the principles of water as a human right and as a public trust. We need comprehensive strategies for protecting water resources, mechanisms to monitor and assess the implementation of those plans, and accountability mechanisms to ensure that water is actually protected —not just for today, but for the future. It is our individual and collective responsibility.

For a decade now, polls have shown that nearly 90 percent of Canadians support labelling genetically modified foods, but both Conservative and Liberal governments have failed to listen. Consumers have a right to know what they are buying, and labelling of genetically modified foods will allow people to make their own choices. It’s time for Ottawa to catch up with what nine out 10 Canadians want and 64 other countries already do. People have a right to know if they are consuming GMOs.

Many were in attendance for the Kiip Medi Kaaning Well abandonment project ground breaking ceremony of Jan. 6 in Wikwemikong First Nation. The day included an information session and opportunity for members to ask questions about the work that is being undertaken to cap two of several wells in the community. There are approximately 40 abandoned wells from the 1860’s to 1950’s that the F.N. is aware of on the reserve, some of which are spewing oil. Wikwemikong Lands & resources department had made many attempts to seek and agreement with the Federal Gvt. for remediation. The Fed.
