Congratulations to the committee on your efforts and for organizing another successful fundraising Gala which will benefit the students at ELSS and assist in supporting extra-curricular sports teams & clubs. I was joined by Kentucky intern, Taylor Phillips for a very informative meeting today with members of Action Hepatitis Canada. They are working to engage government, policy makers, and civil society across the country to promote hepatitis B and C prevention, improve access to care and treatment, increase knowledge and innovation, create public health awareness, build health professional capacity, and support community-based groups and initiatives. Did you know that it is estimated 250,000 Canadians are living with hepatitis C and 44% of them don't even know they are infected? Take a moment to check out their website to learn more about hepatitis B and C in Canada: http://actionhepatitiscanada.ca/ Also, my young friend in the picture did not sit in on the meeting but is pretty much the star of this photo!

The Hearst Sprinfest is in full swing at the Claude-Larose Recreation Centre in Hearst. Last night I toured the booths at the commercial Trade Show and took advantage of the opportunity to pick up a few unique items. The bi-annual event is hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 173) and is a golden opportunity for the region’s business community, artists and organizations to promote their goods and services.

HMCS Captain Kid 306 Sea Cadets along with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 561 held the annual Battle of the Atlantic parade & ceremony on Sunday morning. The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign in World War II and created many culturally enduring images as the fight to protect the flow of goods from North America to the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union raged from 1939-1945. It pitted Germany, who was later joined by Italy against Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Navy, Allied merchant shipping (Including ships from Norway and Brazil), and the United States once they entered the war.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 561 hosted the Ladies Auxiliary Zone H4 Convention on Saturday. The Convention began with a parade that marched to the cenotaph and laid a wreath to remember and honor the fallen, our veterans, and all those currently serving. It was amazing to hear how much volunteer time these women give to their auxiliaries, the good work that they do, and the amazing fundraisers that they organize. Their commitment and dedication are a vital and integral part of the work of Legions and their community mindedness does not go unrecognized. Thanks to all for what you do and for the support you give to not only the Legion but to your community.

I had a great meeting today with the good folks from the Canadian Dental Association. They are looking to improve dental health for Veterans as well as First Nations and Inuit communities. We spoke about the challenges for Veterans in long-term care and the gap in oral health outcomes between First Nations and Inuit populations and those of other communities. The benefits of good oral health go well beyond a nice smile. There are implications for self-esteem, employment opportunities, the ability to eat healthy, nutritious food, and very real connections to an individual’s overall health. This was the second rally held in Elliot Lake against the Conservative Government`s anti-terror legislation (C-51). Here’s what the experts are saying about this flawed bill: - Intelligence experts say our current counter-terrorism laws are adequate - The privacy Commissioner says we should stop this bill - Amnesty International says C-51 is the worst setback for human rights in Canada`s modern history. The Bill undermines principles of justice in Canada. Most importantly, Canadians shouldn't have to choose between their security & their rights.

The We C’Hair for Colten fundraiser held on April 12th was a phenomenal success! The place was hopping with people getting haircuts, bidding on the silent auction, purchasing draw tickets and sharing their talent. The fundraiser was organized to help little Colten Michaud and his family as he undergoes treatment for leukemia. What generosity!!!
