This afternoon MP Claude Gravelle and I met with representatives from Pele Mountain Resources - Alan Shefsky, President & Director and Martin Cooper, Director of Lands & Aboriginal Affairs - regarding their readiness and the need to move forward on a North American rare earth supply chain. Last night they participated at the Regional Round Table on Sustainable Development hosted by Serpent River First Nation in Elliot Lake . Support is required at all levels of government in order for this project to be realized; they are committed to job creation and to transforming the minerals here in Canada which would be of great assistance in helping the manufacturing industry rebound, creating jobs and improving both our national and local economies.

Clara’s Big Ride visits Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing. Winter and Summer Olympian Clara Hughes (no relation) is riding across Canada raising awareness about mental health. Clara stopped in Wawa on Tuesday and received a great welcome - her next stop in AMK will be in Blind River. While in Wawa Clara shared her story, encouraged others to do the same, and also to support those who are impacted by mental health. She stressed the need to continue the dialogue and awareness. We all know someone who has suffered from mental health issues, whether it is friends, family, colleagues, or community members. By raising awareness, supporting and working together we can all help to remove the stigma. Thank you Tara for your moving testimonial and know that your family and friends are there to support you! Also a big thank you to Mayor Linda Nowicki for sharing your family story as well. @BellLetsTalk thanks for your advocacy in raising awareness and helping to break down the barriers on mental health.

MP Johnathan Genest-Jourdain & myself at the National Native Partnership Foundation (NNAPF) Honouring our Strengths National Conference in Ottawa today. Participated in the Strengthening Capacity: Discussion on wage parity for counsellors addressing substance use issues amongst First Nations in Canada. More specifically the fact that the government partnered on the National Policy Framework however, high case loads, low pay and minimal funding for programming is hindering progress. Accredited National Native Alcohol & Drug Assessment Program (NNADAP) and Native Youth Solvent Abuse Program (NYSAP) workers earn between $10,000 to $20,200 less than those in provincial treatment centres but have larger caseloads and less resources to work with. NNAPF has met government requirements and needs the federal government to ensure equitable funding, as well as an increase in funding to improve addictions services and to ensure this is stable and long term.
