Unfortunately, the weather just didn't cooperate this year for the annual Haweater Weekend Parade; for the first time in 30 years the parade was cancelled. Although rained out, kudos to those who attempted to make a go at it! We managed to get some refuge from the rain at the market and at Dreamer's Cove.

The Elliot Lake Amateur Radio Club hosted a celebration last Saturday and were setting up at the Miners' Memorial when I caught up with them. They were hosting the event to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Elliot Lake and were also paying tribute to miners who have lost their lives across Canada. Throughout the afternoon they were touching base with other amateurs around the world.

I had a fantastic time at the annual Richards Landing's Community Night festivities sponsored by Matthews Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. There were activities for all ages and food for a variety of taste buds (I especially enjoyed the deer tails). Hundreds lined up for the evening parade and my good friend Michael Mantha's float won second prize in one of the categories. Way to go!!!

I had a great time with our leader, Tom Mulcair, during his visit to Sudbury yesterday. I met up with Sally and Steve Marshall for breakfast with Tom at the Days Inn before heading to The Outside Store to talk about the importance of small businesses in our communities. I also accompanied Tom on his shopping trip to purchase Orange Crush t-shirts at Mark's Work Wearhouse on the Kingsway. Tom also took the time to drop in at Chapters where he signed some copies of his book "Strength of Conviction".

I spoke with Ian Bos today. He is walking across Canada to raise awareness for palliative care in Canada and to raise funds for the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society in memory of his father. Take a moment to look at Ian’s website or Facebook page and consider supporting this cause. http://chpca.convio.net/site/TR/Events/General?fr_id=1400&pg=entry https://www.facebook.com/ianswalk2015 End of life care is something that is going to demand more of our attention as our society ages. I sat on a parliamentary committee that studied palliative care. In 2014, New Democrat MP, Charlie Angus successfully moved a motion through parliament for a cross-country strategy on palliative and end-of-life care, but that is just the beginning. Here is a column I wrote on the subject: http://carolhughes.ndp.ca/time-for-a-palliative-care-strategy-in-canada Congratulations to Ian for taking on this important cause!

Voici quelques photos des bénévoles qui ont été reconnus pour leurs longues années de service exceptionnel. « Notre nation réussira ou échouera au degré que nous –les citoyens et les entreprises—participent tous activement à bâtir des communautés fortes, durables et enrichissantes ».—Arnold Hiatt Volunteers are at the heart of our communities and, this week, the Town of Hearst celebrated their volunteers in great numbers. Congratulations to all and thank you for being so generous with your time.
