Here's an important issue for the north. If you remember the lead up to the election there were a number of announcements for braodband projects in Northern Ontario. Now that the government has changed, everything is on hold. This is important infrastructure if we are going to be able to participate in the virtual economy, educate people, or just stay informed and in touch. http://www.chroniclejournal.com/news/local/ndp-puts-gov-t-on-broadband-hot-seat/article_5cdb8830-cdaa-11e5-bc4b-93bc8cbc703d.html

I had a great meeting yesterday with representatives from the Canadian Federation of Students who are looking for some improvements with the help of parliamentarians. They raised some key issues with me including these recommendations: • Alleviate education-related debt that burdens Canadians through a publicly funded, affordable post-secondary system • Re-establish Canada’s identity as a world leader in research • Address the long-term implications of high levels of un/underemployment levels of recent graduates The delegates I met with were very prepared for the conversation and shared many points related to how each recommendation could be achieved. I know that the costs associated with post-secondary education is one of the biggest hurdles that students have to overcome and that too many of our young people are starting out their post graduate life with crushing debt. Add un/underemployment to that and it’s easy to see why these students have devoted themselves to this cause.

Today is World Cancer Day. While the call to action of this year’s theme ‘We can. I can’, includes how everyone to do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer, there is a lot our government can do in Canada - especially when it comes to equal access to cancer drugs throughout the country. More and more, Canadians have to rely on private insurance to pay for their cancer medications - even then only certain drugs are covered and too many people have to be treated in hospital so they can get the medicine they need. We are one of the wealthiest and stable countries in the world and still Cancer treatment can be a financial burden which only adds to the emotional stress for patients and their families. New Democrats believe that Canadians need universal prescription drug coverage. We must ensure that every Canadian – regardless of their age or place of residence – has access to the drugs they need to keep them healthy. We will continue to do everything we can to fight this disease and improve cancer treatment for all Canadians. http://www.worldcancerday.org/

I had a great time at Elliot Lake Secondary School’s Walk for Memories on the weekend. This is a cause that is close to my heart as my family is one of those affected by this cruel disease. I want to extend my thanks and appreciation to the organizers, participants and all those who supported the walk.

A big thank you to the students & staff at Rockhaven School for the great entertainment & delicious Christmas luncheon on Friday. The students personal and educational growth are really noticeable from one year to the next, and I always enjoy their happy go lucky personalities. Kudos to Carmeuse Lime & Limestone for their generous donation to the school. Merry Christmas to all!

I am sharing with you some pictures I took at the December 15th ceremony for the release of the final report of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission on residential schools. It was presented by Commissioners: Justice Murray Sinclair, Chief Wilton Littlechild & Marie Wilson. This was a very emotional and moving ceremony for me and many others across this country The report reveals the truth about what happened to indigenous children who were abused physically, sexually & mentally while in residential schools. It also gives hope and direction by way of recommendations for how we can move forward together in reconciliation between indigenous people and non-indigenous people. As Justice Murray said "A period of change is beginning that, if sustained by the will of the people, will forever realign the shared history of indigenous and non-indigenous peoples in Canada…Change, of course, will not be immediate. It will take years, perhaps generations.”

If you didn't get a chance to attend the annual Spanish & Area Christmas Market on Dec. 5th, you may want to mark your calendar for next year's event. This is definitely one you don't want to miss!!! Today marks the 26th anniversary of the mass shooting at École Polytechnique in Montreal. It was one of the darkest days in Canadian history. One of the responses to the shooting was the White Ribbon campaign - co-founded by the late Jack Layton. In their own words, “White Ribbon is the world’s largest movement of men and boys working to end violence against women and girls, promote gender equity, healthy relationships and a new vision of masculinity.” Take a moment to learn about the White Ribbon campaign and how we can all work to build a society where violence is a thing of the past. http://www.whiteribbon.ca/

Big thanks to the Nova Scotia Child Care Association who sent me the ribbon and information promoting an early childhood education system. The Association is carrying on the mailing to parliamentarians in memory of the late Patricia Hogan who prepared the letter and ribbons for years.

I had a great time visiting with students at Central Public School last week. Their teacher, Andrea Kirby has done good work teaching these students about our democratic system - they even held a mock election on October 19th, It's great to see this generation become civic minded and engaged politically. They truly are the future and they are heading towards it with open eyes. Great job, Andrea!
