The We C’Hair for Colten fundraiser held on April 12th was a phenomenal success! The place was hopping with people getting haircuts, bidding on the silent auction, purchasing draw tickets and sharing their talent. The fundraiser was organized to help little Colten Michaud and his family as he undergoes treatment for leukemia. What generosity!!!

Today is World Autism Day and thanks to the strong efforts of many autism organizations we are becoming more aware of the challenges that accompany a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism takes many forms and the spectrum includes individuals with all manner of challenges and abilities. There is no single characteristic that is constant from one person on the spectrum to the next which is embodied in the saying - if you’ve met one person with autism; you’ve met one person with autism. While awareness of ASD is growing, acceptance is not always easy to come by. Too often parents dealing with autistic children are judged harshly by people who assume their child is neurotypical. Because individuals on the spectrum appear normal, they can be misunderstood and marginalized which is a real shame. What individuals on the spectrum and their families truly wish for is better public understanding of the challenges and struggles they face. When better understanding is combined with greater awareness, it will help us embrace our friends, neighbours, and family members who fit in somewhere on the autism spectrum. This year’s theme for world autism is the Autism advantage and relates to the fact that individuals on the spectrum suffer greater rates of unemployment. Bill C-51 rally in Elliot Lake this past Saturday saw several people gather to denounce the Harper government's terrorist legislation. The Conservatives are using the politics of fear to try to convince people to surrender their rights and are undermining the principles of justice in Canada.

Here are the questions I posed on Monday about the recent train derailments in Northern Ontario. It seems this government has learned little since Lac Megantic and the biggest problem we are still facing is self-regulation. This time, we are lucky that no one was hurt, but the damage to the Mattagami River system could be significant and the watershed is part of the Mattagami First Nation who are concerned about the well-being and suitability for eating of the one million walleye they stocked in the watershed last year.
