A volunteer appreciation BBQ was held yesterday at the Massey arena to thank the community chefs who prepare the enormous amount of spaghetti sauce for the Massey Marathon’s spaghetti supper. They won’t share their secret recipe, but do share a lot of their time. It is volunteers such as these ones who helped define our communities. Congratulations on your recognition and thank you for your dedicated service to your community!

At unveiling of the 3rd mural hosted by the Downtown Art Project revitalizing committee on Monday. Artist Susan Krupp was on hand to give us a history behind this fabulous piece "The Staking Bee" which was added on the side of Seidel's Brand Source in Elliot Lake with much thanks to Mr. Peter Seidel who jumped at the chance to offer up his building to promote a part of Elliot Lake’s history. This was Susan’s second mural unveiling for the art project; her other mural is on the side of Elliot Lake Meats & Deli here is a link to that unveiling: http://www.elliotlakestandard.ca/2013/09/04/local-artist-paints-founding-fathers To learn more about the other mural (“What is the North for Me?” by Linda Duke) which was also previous unveiled, you can visit https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.393886797381348.1073741839.356606924442669&type=3 Whether you’re from Elliot Lake or just visiting the area, be sure to pick up a Public Art Walk brochure at the Welcome Centre to see these and other amazing projects around Elliot Lake.

The hot weather for the Manitoulin Country Fest this past weekend complimented the hot lineup http://www.manitoulincountryfest.com/lineup. KT & Craig Timmermans, as well as their staff & volunteers were on hand to greet the fans who were in attendance; there were people from all over Canada and abroad. The event saw many attend in groups (I’ve included pics with music lovers from Community Living Algoma and Elders from Pic Mobert First Nation), individually and with family and friends. I’ve included pics that my husband took of Ty Baynton & Marie Botrell. You may want to start planning your vacation around next years’ big show while tickets are at a reduced rate http://www.ticketbreak.com/event_details/7972 . The festival is truly a family friendly venue where you can enjoy some of the best country music! A big thanks to the sponsors too.

Ahnii, Serpent River First Nation held its 24th annual Powwow this past weekend with the theme being “Honoring Our Keepers of Mother Earth”. The event drew big crowds and provided an opportunity for participants and visitors to learn more about First Nation culture through dance, teachings and variety of kiosks (arts & crafts, and food vendors). Chief Isadore Day sought the assistance of Mayor Congi (Township of the North Shore), Mayor Hamilton & Counsellor Finamore (City of Elliot Lake), Mayor Bishop (Town of Spanish River), MPP Mike Mantha and myself for the Sunday morning community breakfast at the Powwow grounds. Be sure to mark your calendar for next year’s event as I’m certain it will be quite a milestone event as they will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Powwow. Miigwetch

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 561 hosted the National Peacekeepers Day ceremony on August 9th. This day is especially special for Comrade Bob Manuel as he was the one who brought the idea forward for the Bill that was introduced by the previous Member of Parliament and he helped to garner much support to lobby the government to pass the Bill. Thanks to the RCL for their continued commitments to the military, veterans & their families, and to all those who took the time to participate, as well as to the Woodland Métis Drum group for their assistance. And most importantly, thanks to all of the men and women who have served and those who are currently serving as peacekeepers for all their efforts towards international peace & security operations.

This afternoon MP Claude Gravelle and I met with representatives from Pele Mountain Resources - Alan Shefsky, President & Director and Martin Cooper, Director of Lands & Aboriginal Affairs - regarding their readiness and the need to move forward on a North American rare earth supply chain. Last night they participated at the Regional Round Table on Sustainable Development hosted by Serpent River First Nation in Elliot Lake . Support is required at all levels of government in order for this project to be realized; they are committed to job creation and to transforming the minerals here in Canada which would be of great assistance in helping the manufacturing industry rebound, creating jobs and improving both our national and local economies.
