Today marks the 13th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who lost their lives, and the thousands of innocent victims whose lives were forever changed.

What a great event this was. Lots of impressive exhibits and the scheduled presentations were quite interesting. The Spanish Horticultural Society (SHS) celebrated a milestone 10th anniversary this weekend. Congratulations to the Society, and also to the founding members who were also recognized for their years of service. Because of the SHS the community is benefitting from the green thumbs that have embellished many surroundings in the town. The SHS is currently making preparations for the annual Halloween Haunted House and it’s really a must see! Happy anniversary to the SHS.

There were lots of activities on Friday evening in Dubreuilville at the 13th annual Strongman competition. The Polar Bear Strongman Junior competition started off the evening and there was a good crowd of people cheering on the youth who took part. The women's semi-pro saw was also an impressive competition and excitement was in the air for the crowning of Miss Strongman Challenge, which was followed by a family Glow dance. Spectators are never disappointed with what this competition weekend offers and it's unfortunate that I couldn't stay for the next two days due to other commitments in the riding, but I'm certain that all who attended truly enjoyed themselves.

It was an honour to take part in the 100th anniversary celebration of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Espanola on Tuesday. The event was part of a tour tracing the steps of the PPCLI one hundred years ago when they crossed Canada to go fight in Europe. In Espanola the soldiers honoured Pte. David Byers, 22, of Espanola, who served with the PPCLI 2nd Regiment, and Cpl. Glen Arnold McKerrow, 32, who served as a medic with 2 Field Ambulances at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa. Both of these men lost their lives while serving in Afghanistan. I took the opportunity to thank Mrs. Jane Byers for her work to ensure the tour would make its way through Northern Ontario along with Regimental Sgt. Major Brian McKennelley and countless others who were involved in the arrangements. It is true there are no words to adequately express the debt of gratitude we feel for the sacrifice these individuals have made, but dedications like this one, and the recent dedication of the Cpt. Glen Arnold Memorial Sports Field in McKerrow ensure that future generations will remember our fallen heroes and their selfless commitment. Finally, let’s thank the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry for their remarkable service over the last 100 years and wish them safe travels as they continue the relay.

Took some time to drop in and visit the annual Jocelyn Township Harvest Festival and Children’s Fall Fair this past weekend. This is truly a great family friendly event that offers a variety of activities for everyone a good selection of delicious homemade pies. I’m told that the success of this event is thanks to the generous amount of volunteers who come forward, some as young as 7. There’s something that everyone can help with. The fair draws hundreds of people each year. While there, I also met up with a few farmers from the area and had a discussion about the need to support young farmers and the growing demand for local products.

Although the parade had to be cancelled due to rain, many took time to admire entries, visit vendors booths, participate in games, taste the cook-offs (chilli & stew) and enjoy local talent. Always a great time and opportunity to meet local crafters.

Well there was certainly something for everyone at the annual Massey Fair this past weekend. The horse pull and mud bogging were quite exciting to watch and since it was such a hot day, frozen yogurt sure hit the spot! The community of Sables-Spanish River always has much going on and the dedication of the volunteers is amazing – they are like the energizer bunny, they just keep going and going (giving & giving)!

A commemoration ceremony, walk and vigil was held in Birch Island last Saturday for Sonya Cywink. Sonya, who originates from White Fish River First Nation, was a young aboriginal woman who was murdered in London, Ontario 20 years ago - http://www.manitoulin.ca/commemoration-sisters-murder-raises-awareness-issues-concern. Another ceremony was also being held in London for Sonya. Her murder remains unresolved. Others also shared their stories of their loved ones who were murdered; it was quite a moving ceremony. A national inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women is urgently needed.

North Shore Elders held a meeting at Mississauga First Nation raising concerns about the aerial spraying of forests and the impacts this has on health, environment, wildlife and way of life/heritage. This has been an issue not only in Northern Ontario but across Canada. It’s imperative that all levels of government hear these concerns and ensure that these pesticides undergo impact assessments and that these products are constantly re-evaluated. The meeting saw elders, municipal leaders, youth and concerned citizens join in the conversation.

The hot weather for the Manitoulin Country Fest this past weekend complimented the hot lineup http://www.manitoulincountryfest.com/lineup. KT & Craig Timmermans, as well as their staff & volunteers were on hand to greet the fans who were in attendance; there were people from all over Canada and abroad. The event saw many attend in groups (I’ve included pics with music lovers from Community Living Algoma and Elders from Pic Mobert First Nation), individually and with family and friends. I’ve included pics that my husband took of Ty Baynton & Marie Botrell. You may want to start planning your vacation around next years’ big show while tickets are at a reduced rate http://www.ticketbreak.com/event_details/7972 . Chief Isadore Day sought the assistance of Mayor Congi (Township of the North Shore), Mayor Hamilton & Counsellor Finamore (City of Elliot Lake), Mayor Bishop (Town of Spanish River), MPP Mike Mantha and myself for the Sunday morning community breakfast at the Powwow grounds. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 561 hosted the National Peacekeepers Day ceremony on August 9th. This day is especially special for Comrade Bob Manuel as he was the one who brought the idea forward for the Bill that was introduced by the previous Member of Parliament and he helped to garner much support to lobby the government to pass the Bill. Thanks to the RCL for their continued commitments to the military, veterans & their families, and to all those who took the time to participate, as well as to the Woodland Métis Drum group for their assistance. And most importantly, thanks to all of the men and women who have served and those who are currently serving as peacekeepers for all their efforts towards international peace & security operations.
