  Check out these two FREE events Environment Hamilton is hosting later later this week. EH is bringing in Michael Shuman - a fellow with the US-based Post Carbon Institute. He's the author of 'Going Local' and 'Small-Mart Revolution'. His latest book is called 'Local Dollars, Local Sense - How to Shift Your Money From Wall Street to Main Street and Achieve Real Prosperity'. Michael will be doing a public forum this Friday, May 25th - 7pm in the auditorium of the Bd of Ed (100 Main West @ Bay). He's also doing a day-long workshop on Saturday the 26th (9:30am - 5:30pm) in the Hamilton Room at the Central Library. Both events will focus on helping us understand how we can relocalize our economy by understanding how money can be relocalized in creative ways.   Today I'm remembering the 26 miners killed on the job at the Westray Mine 20 years ago. And I'm re-committing to ensuring that the 2004 Westray Act is enforced, and that employers are held criminally responsible for the health and safety of their workers. To quote USW National Director Ken Neumann, "We are tired of workers' death and injury being considered an acceptable cost of doing business". Today we mourn, tomorrow we fight for the living.

  Join Hamilton 350.org for its Global Day of Action. I'm bummed that I can't be there myself today, but it's a great cause, so the least I can do is promote it! A number of floods since 2006 have been labelled 50-100 year storms and yet we are experiencing them repeatedly in the last 6-7 years. As part of the Connect the Dots campaign, Hamilton 350.org is asking everyone to bring an umbrella for a photo opp. at King and James - 1pm today at Jackson Square. Hope you can make it! And tell Don McLean that Chris sent ya! ;-)

  Today is the national Day of Mourning for workers killed or injured on the job. In Ontario there were 338 reported workplace fatalities in 2011, and a total of 1017 across the country. Those figures don't include the 38% of the workforce that's not covered by a worker’s compensation system nor does it account for occupational diseases. Clearly, the real numbers are much higher. It's time to say enough is enough. There is no such thing as a workplace "accident". ALL workplace deaths and injuries are preventable. Please join me at City Hall at 10:30 a.m. this morning as the Hamilton and District Labour Council and friends commemorate the National Day of Mourning. Today, we mourn the dead. Tomorrow, we fight for the living.
