Tonight at sundown, Jewish families in B.C. and around the world celebrate the beginning of Passover, which commemorates the freedom of their ancestors from slavery in ancient Egypt. For centuries, Passover has served as a reminder to treasure what is most important: family, community, and historical memory. It’s also an opportunity to celebrate the contributions B.C.’s Jewish community has made to build strong prosperous communities throughout B.C., making our province a better place. On this most joyous occasion, I wish all Jewish British Columbians 'Chag Sameach'.”

In 90 years - more than 64 of them as Queen and Canada's head of state - Her Majesty has experienced and helped shape world history like few others, from the Second World War to today. Hers is the longest-ever reign by a Queen regnant in world history, including as Canada's head of state, and remains an example of grace and dignity personified. On behalf of British Columbia, I wish Her Majesty a happy birthday.

For seven years, Don McRae has served the people of Comox Valley with class, distinction, and a smile. He has played an invaluable role in the caucus room and at the Cabinet table. In his roles as Minister of Education, Minister of Social Development and Social Innovation, and Minister Agriculture, Don faced very different challenges with the same focus, determination, and unflappable good humour. I understand his decision not to seek re-election, but I am very sorry to see him go. I want to thank him for all his hard work and commitment to growing a diverse economy on Vancouver Island and across British Columbia. On behalf of all Don’s friends and colleagues in caucus, I wish Don and his family the very best.

British Columbians deserve to feel safe in their communities, but for the people of Surrey and Williams Lake, gang violence has jeopardized that. That’s why today, we’re proving $23 million for an expanded province-wide guns and gangs strategy. This will mean more integrated police teams, prosecutors, and resources to ensure the RCMP has everything they need to bring these low-lifes to justice.

By upgrading their fast-charging infrastructure, the City of West Kelowna is making it easier for BC drivers to go electric. We’ve signed a pledge that all new vehicles will be emissions-free by 2050. That’s only 34 years from now, but thanks to projects like this that add to BC’s public charging network, we’re going to achieve our goal.

We’ll continue to fight for the forest industry until there is a managed deal, with no quotas. Early this morning in Langford, Const. Sarah Beckett was on duty when her police cruiser was involved in a collision with a truck. Despite the best efforts of first responders on the scene, they were unable to save her. My thoughts are with Const. Beckett's colleagues in the RCMP, and especially with her husband and her two young children. Nothing anyone can say will ease their pain during such a dark time. In the years to come, I hope they will take comfort in the knowledge that their mother was a hero. Each and every day, police officers put themselves in harm's way to keep the rest of us safe. We should all take the opportunity to thank them more often.

He has earned the confidence of his voters several times, and continues to reward their trust in him. Under his leadership, Saskatchewan has transformed into one of Canada's most important economic drivers and an important partner for B.C. I've enjoyed working with Brad on breaking down trade barriers, increasing labour mobility, and look forward to continuing to work with him as strong Western voices helping to build a stronger, more prosperous Canada.

I was in Paris not long after the November terror attacks and I was struck by the resolve and determination of Parisians to remain strong in the face of such horrible events. I know that the people of Brussels will have the same strength and resiliency as they mourn those who were lost. Those who conduct acts of terrorism want to change us, and our values. They will fail.

I want to thank all the British Columbians who made their voices and concerns heard about the Softwood Lumber Agreement. I shared those concerns, which is why my government and I have raised the issue of softwood lumber with Prime Minister Trudeau on several occasions, and have been encouraged by the attention he and his government have given this important issue. Earlier today, President Obama and Prime Minister Trudeau indicated that negotiating teams on both sides are making progress, and the two leaders expressed their confidence that this issue will be resolved. I am greatly encouraged. I want to thank both the President and Prime Minister for continuing to work together. Forestry is the sunrise industry that helped to establish and define who we are as British Columbians – and must continue to be one of the foundations of our future. British Columbia accounts for 55 per cent of Canada’s softwood lumber exports, and this agreement is crucial to every family who will continue to depend on a healthy forestry sector across our province.
