Next week – May 2nd to 6th, 2016 – our Conservative Caucus is holding this year's Iran Accountability Week, which has been held on Parliament Hill for the past few years to draw attention to human rights abuses of minorities in Iran. That makes this official petition to the Parliament of Canada especially timely: http://bit.ly/1WlUMMw Please take a look and consider signing the petition to send a clear message that we need to judge Iran by its actions, not just words.

Record Number of Immigrants Become Canadian Citizens under Harper Government Citizen Applications Now Processed in Under a Year September 18, 2015 – Toronto, Ontario – More immigrants became citizens under Stephen Harper's Conservative Government last year than ever before in Canadian history and citizenship applications are now being processed in under a year, announced the Honourable Jason Kenney. "Conservatives recognize and value the important contributions of newcomers to building a stronger economy and a better country,” said Jason Kenney. "This is in stark contrast to the old Liberal Government who took newcomers for granted and left close to a million immigrants waiting for years and years to get their applications processed. A re-elected Conservative Government will continue to make processing times even faster.” A record high of 262,625 immigrants received their Canadian citizenship last year, an increase of 32% compared to 2005. Since Stephen Harper’s Conservative government was first elected in 2006, over 1.6 million immigrants to Canada have received their Canadian citizenship. Citizenship applications are now being processed in under a year, compared to over a year and half under the Liberals. Faster processing times are as a result of Conservative government investments that funded better technology and increased processing staff, as well as changes in Bill C-24, the Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act, that make the system more efficient than ever before. “By opposing Bill C-24, the Liberals and NDP voted against faster citizenship processing times,” said Kenney. “What’s worse is that Thomas Mulcair and Justin voted against stripping citizenship from convicted terrorists. They are misleading Canadians in a campaign of fear. But the overwhelming majority of Canadians, including new Canadians, believe that someone who violently repudiates their loyalty to Canada should not be able to retain their Canadian citizenship.” Kenney pointed out that the revocation of citizenship measures in Bill C-24 only apply to dual citizens convicted of terrorism, treason, or engaging in armed conflict against Canada, regardless of whether they were born in Canada or not. Furthermore, Bill C-24 does not impact Canadian citizens from countries that do not allow dual citizenship, such as China or India. By repealing Bill C-24, the Liberals and NDP would: remove regulation of immigration consultants, remove penalties for those convicted of citizenship fraud, and let convicted terrorists keep their citizenship while revoking it from the remaining “lost Canadians.”

Today, I was in Burlington to announce two new ways to support our manufacturing sector and create new, well-paying jobs. Canada’s manufacturing industry is a key pillar of the Canadian economy that provides good jobs for hardworking Canadian families all across our country. We have been focused on building the future of this sector over the past decade and we have a plan to do more. Under our Conservative Government, Canadian manufacturers came through the global recession and now benefit from unprecedented trade opportunities, incentives for new investment in facilities, modern infrastructure, a skilled workforce and one of the most advantageous tax environments in the world. A re-elected Conservative government will build on this proven record by establishing a new Advanced Manufacturing Hub to encourage the development of cutting-edge products and technologies. The new centre, planned for here in Burlington, will become a catalyst for high-quality, value-added investment and jobs in the manufacturing sector. We will also establish an Investment and Trade Promotion Office which will be a one-stop shop to attract investment and product mandates to Canada. These initiatives will translate into new, high-quality jobs across the country and keep Canada’s economy moving forward.

Today, I announced that a re-elected Conservative government will launch the “Quebec Maritime Prosperity” initiative to foster job creation and support Quebec’s Maritime Strategy. This initiative will include funding for cruise tourism projects, such as the new maritime terminal at the Port of Montreal’s Alexandra Pier, and the expansion of the Ross Gaudreault cruise terminal in Quebec City. The Quebec Maritime Prosperity initiative will help to create jobs and preserve Quebec’s maritime heritage. Only the Harper government will continue to be a partner to ensure Quebec’s prosperity while respecting provincial areas of jurisdiction.

Today I announced that a re-elected Conservative government will build on our record of supporting charitable giving and voluntarism by providing tax relief for service club memberships via the Charitable Donations Tax Credit. This new policy will help hundreds of thousands of service club members carry out important work in their communities. Only our party will continue to encourage charitable giving through tax breaks. We will keep finding ways to make it easier for Canadians to give back to their communities.

There is no higher calling than raising a child – and no greater reward. Today I announced that a re-elected Conservative government will help Canadian parents adopt children by significantly increasing the value of the Adoption Expense Tax Credit, raising the maximum amount to $20,000 and making it fully refundable. Every year, thousands of Canadian families are transformed as they bring adopted children into their hearts and lives. We recognize that adoption costs can be high and, in some cases, prohibitive for families. That’s why we will increase the support available to these caring Canadians. This tax relief is part of our low-tax plan for Canadian families and builds on our proven record of helping make life more affordable for Canadian families through benefits like the enhanced Universal Child Care Benefit, the Family Tax Cut and Tax-Free Savings Accounts.

There are some offenders so dangerous, so violent that we can’t allow them back on the streets. Our government introduced “Life Means Life” legislation to ensure that offenders who commit the most heinous crimes receive a life sentence with no chance for parole. I announced today that a re-elected Conservative government will make “Life Means Life” legislation our top justice priority this fall. Justin and Mulcair think heinous murderers like Paul Bernardo and Clifford Olson should still get a chance to apply for parole and release after 25 years. I disagree. Under our Life Means Life legislation, a life sentence in Canada will mean exactly that – a sentence for life.

Harper highlights support for savings and retirement security Today Prime Minister Stephen Harper highlighted his government’s support for measures to help Canadians save and prepare for retirement through the Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) and other low-tax policies. He reaffirmed that a re-elected Conservative Government would continue to protect TFSAs and the recent contribution limit increase announced in Budget 2015. “Our Government believes in providing incentives for Canadians to save for their short- and long-term financial security,” Mr. Harper said. “The Tax-Free Savings Account is a prime example of our low-tax plan. Nearly 11 million Canadians have opened accounts and are now saving tax-free.” Only a few years after the TFSA was introduced in 2009, 10.7 million Canadians had opened accounts, and the number continues to grow. The Harper Government recently doubled the TFSAs, enabling Canadians to save even more each year and see their savings grow, tax-free, more quickly. Middle-income and low-income Canadian families have benefitted the most from the ability to save through TFSAs, as have seniors. “Older Canadians have worked hard their whole lives and know the value of a dollar saved,” said Mr. Harper. “Tax-Free Savings Accounts are providing seniors with a secure and flexible savings option that protects their money from being eroded by taxes.” Yet Mr. Harper observed that Justin Trudeau and Thomas Mulcair had promised to take this option away from seniors and other Canadians, replacing it with higher mandatory payroll taxes. “For Justin Trudeau and Thomas Mulcair to threaten to take this option away is irresponsible, and puts millions of Canadians’ future savings at risk,” he said. Mr. Harper noted that, in addition to protecting Canadians’ ability to save through a TFSA, the Conservative government had taken other steps such as raising the lifetime capital gains exemption for farmers and fishermen to $1 million, in order to help them succession plan and prepare for retirement. “We trust hardworking Canadians to make their own decisions about what’s in the best interest of their families, and we believe in empowering Canadians with voluntary savings options and low taxes,” said Mr. Harper. “Justin Trudeau and Thomas Mulcair have threatened to reduce Canadians’ take-home pay and ultimately their financial security.”

PRIME MINISTER HARPER ANNOUNCES HELP FOR ASPIRING HOMEOWNERS Building on his announcement of a new, permanent Home Renovation Tax Credit last week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced improvements to help aspiring homeowners purchase their first house. “For many Canadians, owning a home is their most important investment and the achievement of a key life goal,” said Prime Minister Harper. “We want to help more Canadian families purchase their first dream home.” The Home Buyer’s Plan allows aspiring homeowners to make tax-free withdrawals from their Registered Retirement Savings Plans to finance the purchase or new construction of their first home. In 2009, the Harper Government increased the allowable withdrawal from $20,000 to $25,000 – the first increase since the program was established in 1992. “Today, I am announcing a re-elected Harper Government will raise this limit once again – from $25,000 to $35,000,” said Prime Minister Harper. “With this increase, we will continue to help families know the pride and stability of having a place to call their own.” Another issue for aspiring home buyers, especially in Vancouver and Toronto, is the affordability of housing. Real estate commentators have suggested that speculative foreign buyers are a significant factor in driving homes out of the price range of average families in some parts of the country. “If, in fact, foreign speculators are driving the cost of housing to unaffordable levels, that is something the government can, and should, find a way to address,” the Prime Minister said. “Our government will commit to collecting comprehensive data on foreign buyer activity in Canada’s housing market,” said Prime Minister Harper. “We will then take action in coordination with provinces to ensure foreign investment in Canada’s housing sector supports the availability and affordability of homes for Canadians.” The Prime Minister contrasted these practical, serious solutions to help aspiring homeowners against the ineffective and expensive schemes proposed by his opponents. “Justin Trudeau is promising a meaningless ‘national strategy’ that will do nothing for families,” said the Prime Minister. “He just doesn’t understand the issue.” “Mulcair and the NDP have promised expensive benefits for developers and investors that we cannot afford and that won’t help middle class families,” the Prime Minister said. “Only our Conservative party will continue to support Canadian families in achieving the pride and stability of home ownership.”

PM HARPER ANNOUNCES PLAN TO STRENGTHEN THE NATIONAL ANTI-DRUG STRATEGY Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced new, additional steps to combat drug abuse and accused his opponents of supporting policies that would make drugs even more available in Canadian neighbourhoods. “Drugs destroy lives, rob young people of their future and tear families apart,” said Prime Minister Harper. “That’s why cracking down on illegal drug use and prescription drug abuse is a priority for our government.” Under the leadership of Prime Minister Harper, the government launched the National Anti-Drug Strategy in 2006 which is contributing to safer communities by focusing on enforcement, prevention, and treatment. “Our National Anti-Drug Strategy is working,” Prime Minister Harper said. “But the number of people using drugs is still alarmingly high particularly among young people.” To counter the damage caused in communities by drug abuse, Harper today announced his government would strengthen the National Anti-Drug Strategy by: · Supporting a national toll-free helpline where parents can get advice to help them recognize the signs of drug use and prevent their children from using drugs in the first place · Implementing a 20-percent increase in funding for the RCMP’s Clandestine Laboratory teams to target the production of illegal drugs, including grow ops and meth labs · Renewing the mandate of the Mental Health Commission of Canada for 10 years, and updating it to focus on links between substance abuse and mental health. “These steps will help protect children and neighbourhoods from illegal drugs,” Prime Minister Harper said. “We will also provide treatment support for those recovering from addiction problems.” The Prime Minister warned that Justin Trudeau’s Liberals and Thomas Mulcair’s NDP would follow a different approach, including rolling back the government’s Respect For Communities Act, which gives police, families and residents a say whenever there is a proposal to open a supervised drug injection site in a community. “For me, keeping dangerous drugs away from our children and out of our neighbourhoods isn’t a point of debate,” the Prime Minister said. “It’s just the right thing to do.” “Justin refuses to acknowledge the damage that drugs do to families and communities,” Prime Minister Harper said. “He wants to allow the sale of marijuana in corner stores and increase the number of heroin injection sites, dangerously misguided policies that would only make drugs more accessible to our children.” “Thomas Mulcair supports dangerous, ideological policies that would encourage the use of drugs and increase the health, crime and community safety problems that come with it,” Prime Minister Harper said. “Thomas Mulcair’s party "proudly" supports heroin injection sites and welcomes their establishment in more neighbourhoods across the country.” “Unlike the other parties, we will not give up on treating addicts or introduce reckless policies that would encourage the use of illegal drugs,” said Prime Minister Harper.

Vote Harper to stop a “Netflix Tax” #nonetflixtax Today Prime Minister Stephen Harper reaffirmed that a re-elected Conservative Government will not regulate or tax over-the-top digital services such as Netflix. “As a government we have sought to increase consumer choice and keep taxes low and that’s not going to change,” the Prime Minister said. “Some politicians though are always looking for new things to tax.” Stakeholders and other levels of government have called for regulation and taxation of Netflix and other online services. The Harper Government has rejected these calls and will continue to do so if re-elected. “We will never tax Netflix or other online streaming services” he reaffirmed. The Prime Minister observed that both Thomas Mulcair and Justin have opened the door to future taxation of Netflix. Both the NDP and the Liberals have called on Netflix to provide “detailed information about their services, such as consumers’ habits” and more “data on over-the-top services, with a particular focus on consumer habits.” “The choice is clear,” he pointed out. “If you like watching Netflix or videos online, only voting Conservative will stop a Netflix Tax.”

Harper announces new, permanent Home Renovation Tax Credit Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that a re-elected Conservative government would introduce a new, permanent Home Renovation Tax Credit, creating and supporting well-paying jobs and helping Canadians maintain and increase the value of their homes. “For most Canadians, the family home is their biggest financial investment and the place where they raise their children, relax with friends and family, and enjoy their golden years,” said Prime Minister Harper. “A permanent Home Renovation Tax Credit will help make it more affordable for Canadians to ensure their home meets their needs.” The Prime Minister noted that, in addition to reducing the costs of maintaining a home, the Home Renovation Tax Credit will also support local jobs and ensure consumers benefit from professional contractors. “The Home Renovation Tax Credit has been recognized as having helped Canadian consumers avoid the risks of the underground economy[1], while at the same time reducing their taxes,” said Prime Minister Harper. “We will continue our proven record of helping Canadian families in ways that tangibly improve their lives.” The Home Renovation Tax Credit, originally established by the Harper Government in 2009 as a temporary measure, was a resounding success. About one in every three households took advantage of this program, saving more than three million Canadians, on average, more than $700 each. It also pumped $4.3 billion into Canada’s economy, creating and supporting well-paying jobs. A re-elected Harper Government will make this tax credit permanent, available each year for substantial home renovation expenses between $1,000 and $5,000. “Our Conservative government has cut taxes and increased benefits for Canadian families, so that Canadians keep more of their hard-earned money,” the Prime Minister said. “We believe that Canadians are best-placed to decide how to invest in the needs and priorities of their families.” “Justin just doesn’t understand how the Home Renovation Tax Credit will help Canadian families and support Canadian jobs, said the Prime Minister, “while Mulcair has voted against every single Conservative tax cut.” “Only a re-elected Conservative government will continue with a low-tax plan to help Canadian families,” said Prime Minister Harper. NEWS RELEASE Harper Announces Additional Measures to Help Apprentices and Businesses Create Jobs OTTAWA - Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced a plan to expand and extend its support for apprentices, their families and the businesses that hire aspiring tradespeople. “Apprenticeships play a vital role in our post-secondary education system and help provide skills and knowledge to grow our economy,” said Prime Minister Harper. “That’s why our government has provided incentives for people to enter trades and tax credits for businesses to hire aspiring tradespeople.” The Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit was introduced by the Harper Government in 2006 and provides a 10 percent, non-refundable tax credit to businesses on wages paid to qualifying apprentices in the first two years of their contract. As a result of today’s announcement, the maximum credit will increase from $2,000 to $2,500 and will be extended to the third and fourth years of apprenticeship training. The Prime Minister noted that over 11,700 businesses and 67,900 apprentices benefited from tax credit in 2013 – five times as many as in 2006. The extension of the tax credit will help encourage more apprentices to successfully complete their training, and will ensure they find well paid jobs. “While registration for apprenticeship programs is growing, our plan to expand and extend this tax credit will help even more apprentices acquire the skills to find well-paying jobs,” Prime Minister Harper said, noting that Canada needs more skilled tradespeople to fill available positions. “Justin Trudeau opposed every single tax cut we introduced,” said Mr. Harper. “He said that he will cancel the Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax credit, and he wants to take money out of the pockets of Canadians to create big and poorly-conceived government programs, inspired by the elite, that will ultimately do nothing to help Canadian families. That is the price of inexperience and bad fiscal management. He’s just not ready.” “Thomas Mulcair has never seen a tax cut he liked. He wants to raise taxes for all Canadians. He plans his big programs with union bosses in order to increase the size of government. We can’t trust him,” said Mr. Harper. “Mulcair and his NDP propose reckless plans that will set Quebec, and all of Canada, back. He will be a real economic disaster.”

Canadians have a clear choice of Proven Leadership for our economy, our security August 2, 2015, Waterdown, ON -- Flamborough-Glanbrook Conservative candidate David Sweet welcomes the official start of the 42nd general election campaign saying that in a fragile global economy and an increasingly dangerous world, Canadians will have a clear choice in this election between the proven leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the risky high-tax, high-debt plans and inexperience of the other parties. “Now more than ever we need the proven leadership of Stephen Harper and we must continue with our low tax plan for economic growth,” says Sweet. “We are making record investments in infrastructure, lowering taxes for all Canadians, balancing the budget and, here in the greater Hamilton area, we continue to make strategic investments that are creating local jobs in new and innovative fields.” Sweet emphasizes that we’re blessed to live in a democracy and sees the longer campaign as an opportunity to meet more voters and discuss the issues at stake in this election. Sweet wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable long weekend. His campaign office in Waterdown will be open on Tuesday, and an office in the Glanbrook area will open soon. David Sweet has been the Member of Parliament for Flamborough, as well as Ancaster, Dundas and Westdale, since 2006. He is seeking re-election in the new riding of Flamborough-Glanbrook. Riding boundaries were redrawn by an independent commission in 2013 based on population shifts reported in the 2011 census – creating the new riding of Flamborough-Glanbrook among 30 new ridings across the country

41st Parliament Accomplishments The current session of Parliament has just wrapped up and much has been accomplished. Your federal government continues to be focused on jobs, the economy and long-term prosperity for Canadians. The Economic Action Plan has supported one of the strongest economic and job creation records in the G7. However, we know that the Canadian economy is not immune from the complexities of global markets and that’s why the recent federal budget made significant investments in science and technology, in infrastructure, and in creating the best possible environment for job-creating small businesses to grow. A balanced budget puts us in a good position to weather future economic storms. It’s important to note that we balanced the federal budget all the while increasing health care transfers to the provinces. By managing your tax dollars wisely, your federal government has been able to cut taxes for families, for seniors and for every single Canadian – a record that we began when we first reduced the GST back in 2006. The Family Tax Cuts and Benefits Plan – including the increases to the Universal Child Care Benefit – supports every single family with children. This helps all families in Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough and Westdale. Also in this session of Parliament, I was very proud that my Private Member’s Bill – an Act to Bring Fairness For the Victims of Violent Offenders – passed the Senate and received Royal Assent. Supported unanimously by all parties in the House of Commons, this new legislation gives a greater voice to victims and treats them with the greater respect in the parole process. It’s an honour to represent you and report back to you on the previous session of Parliament. Thank you.
