To offset the typical consumer costs that may result from Alberta’s new carbon levy, 60 per cent of Alberta households will receive a full Climate Leadership Adjustment Rebate. An additional six per cent will receive a partial rebate. This rebate is a key part of Alberta’s Climate Leadership Plan to take action on climate change and protect Albertans’ health, environment and economy for future generations. It is being introduced as new performance standards on heavy emitters are established to ensure industry is doing its part.

It is false to claim education property tax rate has increased. The rate is 32% of education spending, which is unchanged since 2013. Any increases people are facing are a result of routine increased assessment. Government policy has not changed in any way. #ableg

“We’ve recognized that families are staying in Alberta,” says Eggen. “We have a very young population, and there are lots of kids between the age of zero and four so we recognize that we have to make sacrifices in other areas so kids get the schooling that they need.” Eggen says he’s also glad that school building projects will continue, with a sunshine list in place for school boards.

The budget has dropped. We stood firm to our commitments to support families and communities, invest in infrastructure, diversify our energy industry and energy markets, and support Alberta business. I'm particularly proud to highlight we will be continuing to move forward with over 200 new school builds and modernizations and fully funding new enrollment growth into 2018 in Alberta schools to ensure we're not shortchanging the education of our most valuable asset, our youth.

Eggen said he accepts the report's recommendations which include improving project planning, management, reporting and cashflow forecasting. "I think what is most clear with the auditor's report is that the previous government had made promises for schools based on political gain and without monies in place, and sometimes without even sites available for those schools," Eggen said. Since October, Eggen's department has worked with Ernst and Young and KPMG to ensure money is in place, and the departments are talking to each other. Eggen said 28 new builds and 20 school modernizations will be ready this fall.

“Our government will do better, and we have already made numerous changes to our building, accounting and reporting processes in response to concerns raised in today’s report. “Our priority right now is to complete schools promised to Albertans as soon as possible. We anticipate 28 new school projects and 20 modernizations being completed in time for the 2016-17 school year. “We will also work to keep Albertans informed about the projects underway in their communities in as timely a manner as possible.”

Education Minister David Eggen says he doesn’t mind those being included in the study. “Teachers are on a contract, so the full scope of what they do in relation to educating students and contributing to the school is included in the study,” says Eggen. “So, I think it’s fair. What it does give us is an unprecedented snapshot of teachers and how they work.” Eggen adds there were no big surprises in the review. “I think this study helped us to confirm what we already know,” says Eggen. “Teachers are working an average of 48 hours per week during the school year. It’s pretty much what we thought, we get good value for the teachers that we have, we have an excellent education system, (and) this just adds another little element of understanding (into) how things work.”

So proud of my colleague Irfan Sabir for helping to implement our new Alberta Child Benefit which will support all families earning less than $41,220 per year in net income, including those receiving AISH and Income Support. The maximum annual benefit is $1,100 for families with one child, and up to $2,750 for families with four or more children. Once fully implemented, 235,000 children in 130,000 lower-income families will receive a total of $195 million in annual benefits from the new ACB. The first ACB payments will go out in August.

Students from across the province said they’re happy with the work the NDP have done to support LGBT youth, but are hoping Minister David Eggen is willing to take a tough stand with school boards. Eggen invited students who were part of their schools’ Gay Straight Alliance or Queer Straight Alliance to the legislature Wednesday. Eggen said only one board has failed to meet his deadline for new transgender policies and he intends to work with all boards to make sure they have adequate policies. “In that spirit of collaboration, over these next few weeks we will work together with board to make sure board policies are keeping with the legislation."

Great news for seniors looking for a flexible and affordable option to allow them to make the modifications necessary to stay in their homes and communities longer.
