A Long Record of Success: Conservatives on Immigration As a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration, I got an upfront view and the chance to work on the reforms to Canada’s immigration system which my fellow Conservatives and I brought in. I am very proud to say that we have welcomed a record number of new Canadians in 2014, and that our first nine years in office have consistently out-performed the Liberals first nine years in office! Unlike previous Canadian governments and other governments from around the world, we did not shut the doors on immigration during economic downturns. In fact, the number of new permanent residents admitted increased in 2008, increased, in 2009, and increased in 2010 even as Canada recovered from the worst crash since the Great Depression. On top of the high numbers of permanent residents we have admitted each year, the Conservatives have also prioritized cutting the immense backlog of applications left by the Liberals. More on that later. If re-elected, I will continue to work with my fellow Conservatives to keep our immigration system flowing smoothly, admitting the best, and constantly improving, without slamming the doors.

More Money in Your Pocket, Conservative Tax Cuts Canadians now enjoy the lowest personal federal tax burden in 50 years thanks to my fellow Conservatives and me. We started by reducing the GST from 7% to 6% on July 1st, 2006 then cutting it again to 5% on January 1st, 2008. Unlike Jean Chrétien’s Liberals who promised to deal with GST but never delivered, we actually cut it. We increased the basic personal amount, i.e. the income that all Canadians can earn before income taxes kick in, to $11,327. This allows everyone to earn more tax free. Speaking of tax free, we introduced the first entirely tax free savings account. Starting at $5000 per individual, the TFSA allows all Canadians to invest as they see fit and not pay a penny of taxes on the returns or withdrawals of the principal. In 2015 we doubled the annual contribution limit to $10,000. Both the Liberals and NDP have promised to claw back this increase, making it harder for hard-working Canadians to save and invest their own money. My fellow Conservatives and I believe that you know how to spend your own money better than we do, so have cut taxes over 160 times since taking office. If re-elected, I will continue to work for a low-tax environment for Canadians while running balanced budgets.

Express Entry: Bringing the Best to Canada Unlike the previous Liberal governments who broke Canada’s immigration system and left crippling backlogs in their wake, my fellow Conservatives and I think that our immigration system should benefit Canada by bringing in the best and brightest from around the world. We have increased our focus on economic applicants who are most likely to integrate and thrive both socially and financially in Canada, all without diminishing our family reunification priority. One of our Conservative Government's greatest immigration achievements is the new Express Entry system which prioritizes skilled, educated, young applicants hoping to make a future for themselves and contribute to Canada, who already have a job offer lined up. This lets them hit the ground running and integrate quickly. If re-elected, I will continue to work hard to ensure that Express Entry works efficiently and sensibly for the benefit of Canadians and newcomers alike.

Good news for Jobs in Alberta and all of Canada: cpcp.cc/H3WbYR This historic Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement will improve market access for Alberta’s companies, including in mining, energy, transport and construction, R&D, legal, engineering and architectural services. The agreement between 12 countries representing almost 40% of the global economy and over 800 million customers removes tariffs and other trade barriers on key Alberta exports such as: aluminum, iron, steel, nickel, petroleum, coal, industrial equipment, plastic and chemical products, feed crops, pet food, canola seed and canola oil, wheat, barley, beef, pork, lumber and newsprint. This means more jobs for Albertans and all Canadians. The Conservatives are clear: more trade equals more jobs for hard-working Canadians. “This is really fantastic news for Canada’s beef producers.” - Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) (http://www.cattle.ca/news-events/news/view/beef-producers-applaud-tpp-agreement-/) “Canada could not afford to remain on the sidelines and risk losing ground in key markets… TPP will also provide significant benefits for other export-oriented agriculture sectors including barley, canola, beef and pork and give Canadian producers an advantage over competitors outside of the agreement.” - Alberta Wheat Commission (http://www.albertawheat.com/alberta-wheat-commission-welcomes-conclusion-of-trans-pacific-partnership-2/)

Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival Ottawa, Ontario - Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival: “This evening, Canadians from diverse communities will come together to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as Moon Festival. “Canadians of Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean heritage celebrate this ancient festival during which gratitude is expressed for plentiful harvests. As a country with a strong agricultural tradition, Canadians of all backgrounds may appreciate this joyful celebration. “Under the full moon, children will gather to light lanterns, and families will share legendary stories and enjoy delicious traditional mooncakes. “Laureen and I wish all those celebrating a Happy Moon Festival!”

I am proud to have been the MP who first introduced the idea of revoking Canadian citizenship from convicted terrorists in my Private Members' Bill C-425. I am also proud to be a part of the Conservative Government that stood up to the opposition parties who tried to block my bill by making this the law of the land. It disappoints me greatly that there are individuals who don't value the privilege of being Canadian and living in our great country. When I introduced this idea it was my sincere hope that this provision would never have to be used but unfortunately there are those in this world that seek to destroy the Canadian way of life, and they should not be allowed to continue to call themselves Canadian.

A re-elected Conservative government will introduce a $2,000 Single Seniors Tax Credit that will extend additional tax relief to nearly 1.6 million single and widowed seniors in Canada who have pension income. When combined with the existing Pension Income Credit that is claimed by 4.6 million seniors already, this measure will allow single and widowed seniors to receive up to $600 in tax relief every year. We know that single seniors can face unique financial challenges, especially the recently widowed and those on fixed incomes. This new tax credit will provide a targeted benefit to those seniors. Seniors at all income levels are benefitting from our tax cuts and the enhanced benefits we introduced. 2.7 million Canadian seniors have taken advantage of Tax-Free Savings Accounts. Pension income splitting is providing considerable tax relief to over 1 million senior couples. And, increases to GIS benefits are helping Canada’s most vulnerable seniors. As a result of our changes, about 400,000 seniors have been removed from the tax rolls completely. Justin Trudeau and Thomas Mulcair’s NDP have made big promises – unaffordable promises that they would need to pay for with higher taxes. Based on their records to date of opposing Harper Government initiatives to help older Canadians, seniors should worry about whether the NDP and Liberals would actually keep the promises they are making. Canadian seniors can be confident that a Conservative government will deliver on its promises to older Canadians, because we have a proven record and a plan to support seniors. We have kept taxes low and worked to keep money in the hands of seniors to spend on the priorities they choose.

Our Conservative government has a strong record of economic and fiscal management. Today we learned that our government achieved a balanced budget last year – one full year ahead of schedule. This is good for our economy and good for Canadian families. Spending beyond our means, as Justin’s Liberals and Thomas Mulcair’s NDP propose, would lead to permanent deficits, massive tax hikes, and economic chaos. Only our Conservative government has a plan to lower taxes further, keep Canada’s budget balanced, and keep our economy moving forward.

Ottawa, Ontario - Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued this statement on the 14th anniversary of 9/11 and Canada’s National Day of Service: Today we commemorate all the innocent victims of the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001. The thoughts and prayers of all Canadians are with the families and friends of the thousands of individuals, including 24 Canadians, who were brutally and senselessly murdered on this terribly tragic day. We continue to mourn these profound losses, and offer our deepest sympathy to those who were injured and still struggle with the after-effects to this day. But let us also remember the remarkable courage, kindness and generosity of all the first responders, military and civilian volunteers, and good Samaritans, including those in Gander, Newfoundland, and other communities that welcomed thousands of stranded air passengers into their homes. In 2011, in recognition of the importance of such bravery and selflessness, Canada designated September 11th as our National Day of Service. On this 14th anniversary of 9/11 and Canada’s National Day of Service, I encourage all Canadians to pay tribute to the victims of 9/11, and honour the service of the brave men and women in uniform who serve to protect us.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s low-tax, balanced budget plan is providing real, concrete tax relief and enhanced benefits to all families with children. It’s a plan that is underpinned by prudent fiscal management and a commitment to help hard-working Canadian families buy and invest in their homes, cover the costs of child care, save for a child’s education, and prepare for retirement. It is also underpinned by the belief that tax dollars belong to families and not the government. The result is all hard-working Canadian families with children are better off under our plan – a typical two-earner family of four will receive tax relief and increased benefits of up to $6,600 per year. All these benefits are at risk with Justin’s Liberals or Thomas Mulcair’s NDP. Both would add billions of dollars in new federal spending, plunging the country back into deficit. And both would take away the tax relief and enhanced benefits we’ve provided, and add billions more in new taxes. Only Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative Government can be trusted to keep the budget balanced, and keep taxes low and benefits protected for all Canadian families.

The NDP have promised billions of new spending that they can't explain how they will pay for. Their only solution will be to raise taxes on Canadians and job creators. Canadians just can't afford the NDP. In contrast, Conservatives have lowered the tax burden for the average Canadian family by $6,600, all while preserving programs Canadians count on and balancing the budget.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued this statement to mark the 68th anniversary of India’s independence: “Today we mark the 68th anniversary of India’s independence and celebrate the close relationship that Canada and India share. “I was very pleased to have hosted my friend Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, on his first visit to Canada earlier this spring. During his visit, he and I committed to further expanding our bilateral relationship, which is based on our shared values of freedom, democracy, pluralism, and the rule of law. “I am proud to say that our Conservative government has done more to renew and expand our relationship with India than any other government in recent history. I myself have visited India twice as Prime Minister. We are committed to working with India as an important strategic partner by expanding our economic and people-to-people ties. “Canada benefits immensely from our strong, family focused and entrepreneurial Indo-Canadian community that numbers over 1.2 million people. Our Conservative party is especially proud to have 16 candidates of Indian origin nominated to run for election this Fall. “I wish everyone in Canada and around the world celebrating the 68th anniversary of India’s independence.”
