Very busy day in the constituency office. I had some very insightful discussions with local businesses about jobs, training, and the economy as well as follow-up phone calls with constituents to talk about their issues, and a very good meeting with the local Chinese-Canadian National Council chapter.

Thank you to those who came out on Friday to express the need and desire for a lasting peace between Israel and Palestine. The international community and the Government of Canada need to demand an end to the blockade and the occupation in as an important first step in achieving a genuine two state solution.

I have always stood for a peaceful, two state solution, that allows both freedom and security for the people of Palestine and Israel. Enough lives have been lost on both sides. As I have always done, I am joining those in the London community in Victoria Park this afternoon calling for peace in the Middle East.

The Supreme Court has said that currently the government can spend your Employment Insurance Premiums on anything it wants. And for many years that is exactly what Conservative and Liberal governments have done! New Democrats believe EI premiums should only be spent on EI benefits for the workers who contributed, and we have a solution, Bill C-605! :http://www.ndp.ca/news/only-ndp-provides-defence-ei-premiums

It was nice to get out of the office this afternoon and talk with constituents on their doorsteps. Today I visited people along Culver Dr, along with my friend Mohamed Salih who is running to be the next councillor for Ward 3. The chance to hear local municipal concerns as well as listening to people's federal concerns made for some great discussions.

This week in parliament, my colleague Jinny Sims and I asked the Minister what the Conservatives would do to fix the mess they have made of the Social Security Tribunal. This is the "new" version of the "appeals board" for EI, OAS, CPP Disability and other programs under Service Canada. With over 9000 people waiting for a hearing, and the Tribunal hearing only 178 cases last year, we have a massive problem! These are people suffering from workplace injuries, who may have been wrongfully denied EI, or seniors in need of the OAS, they cannot wait YEARS for a decision! http://ow.ly/ygJdb

Today is Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The number of seniors in Canada is expected to double in the next 25 years, with varied needs from home and community support to long term care. Despite this, we are still not doing all we can to give these men and women the respect and support they truly deserve. Services for our seniors are not luxuries. One of the best ways to help our seniors is to end poverty among seniors. The most proven measure to fight senior poverty in Canada has been the OAS and GIS. The OAS-GIS is easily sustainable and in the long run, is actually projected to decrease in cost, relative to the size of the economy. Through supporting, and not cutting, seniors’ programs, we can ensure that they are able to lead happy, healthy, and comfortable lives. Together we can ensure seniors are able to enjoy their retirement with dignity and security.

Some good news today for Canadians concerned about their online privacy. New Democrats have opposed access without a warrant since former Justice Minister Vic Toews brought forward his internet spying legislation. Today the Supreme Court upheld Canadian's rights to privacy. That means the Conservative's so-called "Cyber-bullying" legislation, which is in many ways the same legislation under the cover of anti-bullying efforts, will have to go back to the drawing board. : http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/online-privacy-decision-means-back-to-the-drawing-board-for-tories-1.2674793

Today in London, Western University is bestowing honourary Doctors of Laws on two very worthy Canadians. Former Assembly of First Nations Chief Shawn Atleo is being honoured for his tireless work as a negotiator, educator, and activist for First Nations people. Former Auditor General Sheila Fraser, the first women to hold that post and the person who exposed the Liberal Sponsorship Scandal and worked to hold government to account for responsible public spending from 2001-2011. I want to offer my sincere thanks and congratulations to both.
