On this day 98 years ago, 376 South Asians aboard the Komagata Maru steamship were subjected to one of the worst incidents of racism in Canadian History. I commend my Federal counterparts Thomas Mulcair and Jasbir Sandhu for working to seek an Official Apology from the Government in the House of Commons. The time for healing and reconciliation is now. Let's remind our Conservative colleagues to vote in favour of the NDP Motion on Monday, May 28th.

You're well aware of ridiculously high auto insurance rates Peel. In April, I held a town-hall in Malton specifically on this issue and for those of you that missed it, please find the link below. My next town-hall will be on May 24 in the riding of York West, which pays the HIGHEST premiums in the province! Stayed tuned for more info :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kPeqG1AO1w&feature=share

This week, The Globe wrote an article highlighting how much harder young adults have it today as compared to young adults in the 80’s. In 1984, undergrad tuition was around $1000/yr, and today its $5,300/yr. A house cost a family 1.6 times its annual income in 1984, and today it costs SIX times its annual income. The grievances of young adults today are legitimate since the financial burden they face is unjustifiable.

When eating out, how can we make healthy decisions? As always, The Ontario NDP provides solutions! My friend France Gélinas has introduced a bill to include nutritional information on restaurant menus. Under this bill, large chain restaurants would be required to list calories and highlight foods with high sodium counts. This bill will help combat obesity and encourage healthier eating habits which ultimately help reduce the strain on our healthcare spending. Knowledge is power!

My favourite, most heartwarming moment yesterday wasn't the beautiful sight of 100,000+ people in attendance but rather seeing women leading the Toronto Khalsa Day Parade/Nagar Kirtan. Incredibly proud to see our sisters lead the procession - a true showcase of the fundamental teaching of gender equality in Sikhism. My heartiest congratulations to the parade organizers OSGC for upholding the true spirit!

Prime Minister Harper has a different version of history from the rest of us. Yesterday he accused the NDP for insufficient opposition of Hitler in 1939. Only problem with his statement is that there no was NDP in 1939. This lead to Canadians tweeting with the hashtag #harperhistory with satirical tweets on Harpers version of History. Yours truly couldn’t resist the urge to join in on the fun and made the cut for Toronto Star’s Top 20 funny tweets with “NDP is the reason the Leafs haven't won the Stanley Cup since 1967 #harperhistory :) http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/1169478--top-20-funny-tweets-after-stephen-harper-s-ndp-hitler-comment

Brampton and parts of Mississauga have some of the highest rates of diabetes in Ontario. According to a study released this week, the number of people affected by diabetes in Peel has increased at an alarming high rate. Researchers suggest that a balance in diet and healthy lifestyle choices is one way to battle this growing epidemic. My staff has been working closely with the community to create initiatives that support healthy living. The people have asked for this issue to be addressed, so we are hosting a Yoga Night at the community hub tonight! The class will be taught by Rupa Gill, a certified Yoga Instructor from 6-7:30PM at 470 Chrysler Drive, Unit 18. Call 905-799-3939 to register http://www.thestar.com/news/article/1167084--brampton-has-one-of-the-highest-rates-of-diabetes-in-the-province?bn=1

Extremely disappointed that the Liberals withdrew their bill aimed at fixing high auto insurance rates. Although the Liberal bill was far from perfect, it was a step in the right direction to relieve Ontarians of high auto insurance rates. Clearly, the Liberals priorities are for Insurance Companies and NOT the people!

Last night's Women's Dinner & Discussion circle was a huge success! The night was full of engaging discussions including speaking about significant issues affecting women everyday, the adversities within their lives as well as stories of overcoming the challenges that women face. Further discussions were raised on the importance of strong female leadership within the diverse communities of Bramalea-Gore-Malton and the greater Peel Region. Next time, my staff won't have to kick me out - I'll gladly leave for an such an amazing event.

My staff has kicked me out of the office tomorrow! Why?! Well, because we believe that it is important to provide the strong women of our constituency a space to come build, share and empower one another in a positive, safe and open environment :) With that in mind, my wonderful staff Simran Kaur and Lavleen Kaur will be hosting a WOMEN’S ONLY POTLUCK DINNER and DISCUSSION CIRCLE tomorrow evening. The event will be a place to mix & mingle while focusing on the importance of woman coming together to share their stories and experiences. We all know that BGM is full of strong female leaders so why not build a stronger community, together! I whole heartedly invite all women to congregate at the community hub tomorrow at 470 Chrysler Drive from 6-8:30pm. It is a potluck dinner- so feel free to bring a dish. Please contact my staff for further questions – 905-799-3939

Simply based on area code, for far too long, Peel residents have been paying close to 3 times more in auto insurance versus those living in other parts of Ontario. I promised that I would listen to the community and fight for the issues they feel are important. Without a doubt, most residents felt that auto insurance is THE issue! I want to hear your suggestions, feedback and concerns on Bill 45 so please join me this evening as I host an Auto Insurance Town Hall at Malton Community Centre, starting at 6:30pm I look forward to seeing you all there - It's time we put an END to high auto insurance rates and make day to day living easier for Ontario Families! http://www.bramptonlocal.com/a-town-hall-meeting-by-mpp-jagmeet-singh-to-fix-auto-insurance-troubles/

Wishing to those celebrating, a very happy & prosperous Vaisakhi. Today, people around the world celebrate the joys of the first harvest as well as the creation of the Khalsa - the timeless sovereign. Let us all reflect on the significance of today and carry within us the strength and spirit of the Guru's message of unity, courage and equality. A universal message that we as Canadians respect and represent each day. One which we can all celebrate regardless of our background, religion or culture - and that my friends is truly amazing. Dear Constituents and Friends, As our first session at Queens Park and the year come to an end, I’d like to thank you the voter for this amazing journey and for choosing me to represent you at Queens Park. You may already know, but in the past few months our team has worked hard to raise issues that you have mandated us to raise on your behalf. Along with with our leader Andrea Horwath and the ONDP Team, I’ve had an opportunity to ask Mr. McGuinty and the Liberals some seriously tough questions. For example, during our campaign, constituents time-and-time again shared their grievances regarding two topics which they felt folks at Queens Park had been ignoring for years. And today, I’m proud to say that together we have brought change that puts people first, we’ve brought the Liberals to task and voiced the frustrations that many of us face. In our first session at Queens Park we’ve objected to the abnormally high Automobile Insurance rates we are all subjected to, questioned the Liberals laws that have assisted exploitative Job Agencies, raised objections to potentially harmful fumes from residential based crematoriums and highlighted the necessity of Peel Memorial Hospital! With the new years upon us, I promise that our work does not end here and that we are just getting started. In 2012 I promise that Ontario New Democrats and Team Singh will serve the residents of Bramalea-Gore-Malton with the same passion and dedication shown by residents to elect the first New Democrat in Peel history. Until then, I wish you a Festive Holiday Season and a Happy New Year. Sincerely, Jagmeet Singh

Jam packed day today with an auto insurance press conference in the morning. Andrea Horwath and I raised the issue why we in ontario are paying such High rates and why newcomers and lower income earners are unfairly targetted. Afterwards we toured BGM with stops at the airport taxi and limo stand, malton community centre seniors and brampton area youth groups. Tonite I'll be stopping by the Peel Board to listen in on community issues. I'm supposed to be on vacation :)!

It's been an exciting first week at Queens Park. I voted for a Speaker of the House and witnessed my first Throne Speech. The NDP presented a bill to take HST off of home heating and it past both first and second reading! We also supported a bill to hold the Liberal Government accountable for promises to fund and build hospitals during the campaign. I had my first speech in the house, where I stood up and demanded answers and a clear plan to open a second hospital (Peel Memorial) in Brampton. And finally the NDP help defeat a bill that attempted to force sisters and brothers from York Transit back to work. I attended my first press conference as an MPP to support the Concerned Citizens of Malton who are concerned over the potential health hazards presented by a new crematorium located close to their residences. I stated that while I fully support cremation as a religious practice, I demand the province conduct an independent review of the health and environmental impacts to ensure the health and safety of Malton residents are protected! Not bad for my first week :), the work has just begun and I'm looking forward to doing all that I can for my constituents and all Ontarians.
