ndpOn behalf of the New Democratic Party of Canada, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family of Elijah Harper; his wife Anita Olsen Harper, his children Bruce and Holly, and his step-children Karen, Dylan, Gaylen and Grant. Our condolences also go out to the Cree people, particularly Red Sucker Lake First Nation – Elijah’s birthplace – on the loss of their leader and elder. Elijah was the first First Nation person elected to provincial parliament, and he was elected as a New Democrat. While his quiet stand against the Meech Lake Accord, because it was negotiated without the input of Aboriginal peoples, is what most will remember about him, in recent years he became a respected spiritual leader, helping people of all backgrounds find healing and understanding. He was also instrumental in establishing National Aboriginal Day on June 21st, which has become a Canada-wide celebration of First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples, their history and contemporary culture. His leadership helped inspire a new generation to take up the cause of indigenous sovereignty, and honour the survivors of residential schools. His passing will be mourned by many across Canada.May 17, 2013 3:38 pm | British Columbia, Nanaimo—Cowichan - MP

ndpFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 23, 2013 STATEMENT BY ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS CRITIC JEAN CROWDER ON THE REJECTION OF HER MOTION Today the Conservatives had an opportunity to show the people of NunatuKavut in Labrador that after 22 years, Ottawa was finally listening. Unfortunately, the Conservatives did not rise to this occasion. On behalf of all New Democrats, I express grave disappointment with the rejection by the Conservatives of the NDP motion calling on the government to begin negotiations in good faith with the NunatuKavut Community Council on their comprehensive land claim. The motion also called on the government to start nation-to-nation dialogue with First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples; and to prioritize treaty implementation, as well as the settlement and implementation of land claims. Earlier this year Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a commitment to building a better relationship with Aboriginal peoples across this country. The Conservatives also supported an NDP motion calling on the government to commit to action on treaty implementation and full and meaningful consultation on legislation affecting Aboriginal rights. However, today, when it came time for the Conservatives to make a specific commitment, in this case to the people of NunatuKavut in Labrador, they refused to put words into action. The NDP is committed to continuing to hold this government to account on its failure to respect Aboriginal peoples across this country. -30-Apr 23, 2013 3:20 pm | British Columbia, Nanaimo—Cowichan - MP

ndphttps://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CowichanHeritageRiverSurvey In 2003, the Cowichan River was designated as part of the Canadian Heritage River System (CHRS). This program aims to give national recognition to Canadian rivers and to ensure the long-term conservation of their heritage values for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future Canadians. As part of the Cowichan Heritage River Decadal Monitoring Project, Madrone Environmental Services Ltd. designed a survey in order to solicit feedback from the public about changes to the Cowichan River over the past 10 years. This survey also explores the cultural heritage of the Cowichan River in order to fill gaps in the original nomination document. ndpMy response to a recent letter to the editor in Parliament today: Sadly, I would like to be able to stand up in this House today and say it is no longer the case that first nations are facing oppression, discrimination and stigmatization, but in my own riding of Nanaimo—Cowichan, in the last 24 hours we saw a letter to the editor of one of my local newspapers that continued with this discrimination and stigmatization. I have been in contact with the Snuneymuxw Chief Doug White to express my concern on what has happened. It is very sad that, in this time of first nations that are achieving so much, there are so many unaware as to what a real partnership could bring to all of us.Mar 28, 2013 2:06 pm | British Columbia, Nanaimo—Cowichan - MP

ndpToday New Democrats stand in solidarity with the voices around the world who are speaking out against gender violence. As we mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we remember the plight of so many voiceless victims. Tragically, one in three women will be abused in her lifetime, often by someone she knows. Here is Canada, Aboriginal women in particular continue to be subjected to physical and psychological scars that simply do not heal. In a country as well-off as ours, there is no excuse for allowing so many women to be targeted because of their gender. Today is also a day to recommit ourselves to protecting women and girls. Gender violence scars us all and hurts our societies in ways that cannot be measured. In 2008, my colleague Megan Leslie made a very thoughtful speech that I would like to share with you: http://meganleslie.ndp.ca/post/not-so-silent-vigil-december-6th-2008Dec 06, 2012 8:35 am | British Columbia, Nanaimo—Cowichan - MP
