con~National Mining Week~ Today, Minister Oliver initiated the siren and officially opened the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX). He took this opportunity to reiterate the importance of Canada’s mining industry to the Canadian economy and to launch this year’s National Mining Week. The mining sector directly employs 330,000 Canadians and contributed $63 billion to Canada’s nominal GDP in 2011, accounting for 3.9 percent of the total Canadian economy. The Mining industry also generates revenues for critical social programs like health care and education. Our Government is working closely with the mining industry on the Green Mining Initiative to reduce the mining sector’s environmental footprint and to position Canada as a global leader in responsible mining development.May 13, 2013 7:58 am | Saskatchewan, Saskatoon—Rosetown—Biggar - MP

conToday we remember Victory in Europe Day. Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark the 68th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day): “Today Canadians join the international community in celebrating the 68th anniversary of our Allied victory in Europe over Nazi Germany — a regime rooted in racism, anti-Semitism and grotesque violence. “On this day, let us remember the heroic achievements and sacrifices of the more than one million Canadians and Newfoundlanders who put their lives on the line in the Second World War to help end the tyranny in Europe and fight for the universal values of democracy, freedom, human rights and the rule of law that we enjoy today. “Let us recall with pride the numerous cities, towns and other locations where Canadians so distinguished themselves in battle; places like Sicily, Ortona, Juno Beach, Caen, the Falaise Gap, Dieppe and the Scheldt whose citizens still honour and deeply respect the sacrifices made. Canadians also rendered exemplary service in the air war over Europe and in the battles at sea which ensured that vital supplies and munitions kept flowing. “Let us pay the utmost tribute to the more than 45,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders who made the ultimate sacrifice in these far off places, never to be seen by their loved ones again. “The remarkable contributions by Canada in the war, in terms of the grit, spirit and ingenuity of all those who served and the equipment and technology provided, generated immense international respect for our country as well as immense national pride that united us as never before, allowing us to reach new heights as a nation. “On this V-E Day, let us reflect on the enormous and proud contributions by those Canadians and Newfoundlanders who fought so bravely in Europe as well as the sacrifices of the Allies who fought alongside them. “Let us also remember the members of our Canadian Armed Forces who continue to honour our country in the same proud tradition, standing up for what is right in the world, ashore and at sea, in places such as Afghanistan, the Middle East and Africa, including most recently in Libya and Mali.”May 08, 2013 6:31 am | Saskatchewan, Saskatoon—Rosetown—Biggar - MP

conFalk’s Comments Cast Shame on United Nations April 24, 2013 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement: “Once again, United Nations official Richard Falk has spewed more mean-spirited, anti-Semitic rhetoric, this time blaming the attacks in Boston on President [Barack] Obama and the State of Israel. “There is a dangerous pattern to Mr. Falk’s anti-Western and anti-Semitic comments. The United Nations should be ashamed to even be associated with such an individual. “I respectfully call on the United Nations Human Rights Council—again—to remove Mr. Falk from his position immediately. “Mr. Falk’s consistently mean-spirited comments cast a dark shadow over the United Nations and what it can accomplish. conPPP Canada launches the Round Five call for proposals for the P3 Canada Fund. Canada has become a world leader in P3 procurement and the Government of Canada is committed to supporting the further development of the Canadian P3 market by encouraging provinces, territories, First Nations and municipalities to consider the P3 model in delivering their public infrastructure priorities. As part of this commitment, PPP Canada’s focus in Round Five will be on public infrastructure projects that promote jobs and stimulate economic growth. To assist Round Five applicants in preparing their submissions to the P3 Canada Fund, PPP Canada has developed an Application Guide which provides detailed information of the Fund’s eligibility criteria and evaluation process and detailed instructions on how to prepare a submission. In addition, PPP Canada has created a P3 Business Case Development Guide which outlines the necessary steps to the development of a comprehensive and robust P3 business case. Project sponsors whose applications are retained for further analysis will be required to follow this Guide in preparing their Business Case for submission. Both Guides are available for download on PPP Canada’s website at www.p3canada.ca. The application deadline is June 14, 2013 in order to be considered under Round Five. All interested applicants are encouraged to contact PPP Canada or their designated contact, identified in the Application Guide, to discuss the viability of their project before submitting an application.Apr 22, 2013 9:22 am | Saskatchewan, Saskatoon—Rosetown—Biggar - MP

conApril 9, 2013 (JERUSALEM) - Following a warm and constructive meeting today, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird reaffirmed the close and special friendship that underpins the bilateral relationship between our two countries. Today, the Jewish People are masters of their own fate, like other nations, in their own sovereign, Jewish state. Like other nations, Israel has the right to defend itself, by itself. Prime Minister Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Baird held productive discussions on a broad range of regional issues, including Iran’s nuclear program and its sponsorship of international terrorism, the crisis in Syria and the value of a constructive Turkey-Israel relationship. The leaders also discussed attempts to revitalize talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority and expressed hope that fruitful negotiations will be forthcoming in the months ahead. Prime Minister Netanyahu welcomed Minister Baird’s offer of assistance in advancing these talks. http://www.international.gc.ca/wet30-1/aff/news-communiques/2013/04/9a.aspxApr 09, 2013 8:08 am | Saskatchewan, Saskatoon—Rosetown—Biggar - MP

conPrime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the death of former British Prime Minister, The Right Honourable Margaret Thatcher: “With the passing of Baroness Thatcher, the world has lost a giant among leaders. “While many in positions of power are defined by the times in which they govern, Margaret Thatcher had that rarest of abilities to herself personify and define the age in which she served. Indeed, with the success of her economic policies, she defined contemporary conservatism itself. “Her greatest achievements however, were surely on the world stage. Along with the late U.S. President Ronald Reagan, and His Holiness Pope John Paul II, she played a key role in the fall of the USSR. The era of peace and prosperity that followed the end of the Cold War must therefore rank as one of her great and lasting gifts to this generation. Lady Thatcher’s leadership in time of conflict and during the generous peace she helped bring forth, was an example to the world. As a result, millions now live with the dignity and freedom that she envisioned for them, during the darkest moments of the post-war years. “She well deserved to be known as ‘The Iron Lady’. “Canadians knew Mrs. Thatcher well: she addressed Canada’s Parliament twice. “I recall with pride her eloquent portrayal of the philosophical groundings of the principles that have - and I hope forever will - unite the British and Canadian peoples. “’The ideals which our two countries share are the answer to all the doubters,” she said. ‘For centuries we have striven first to win, then to preserve, that freedom and justice without which life has neither dignity nor meaning.’ “New to my own duties as Prime Minister in 2006, she provided me wise and gracious counsel in London, the memory of which I will forever cherish. “Laureen and I join all Canadians in saluting the proud life and legacy of Lady Thatcher.”Apr 08, 2013 8:25 am | Saskatchewan, Saskatoon—Rosetown—Biggar - MP
conMinisters Oliver and Ashfield held events today responding favourably to today’s announcement by TransCanada Corporation (TransCanada) that sufficient market support exists to proceed to a binding open season for contracts for crude oil from Western Canada to Eastern Canadian markets. Our Government strongly supports constructing energy infrastructure which will help transport Western Canadian oil to the East. This would allow Canadian refineries to process substantially more Canadian oil, making our country less reliant on more expensive foreign oil. Moving energy to the East, subject to objective, science-based review, would contribute to the energy security of Canada and all of North America.Apr 02, 2013 10:53 am | Saskatchewan, Saskatoon—Rosetown—Biggar

Once finalized, this historic agreement will provide the Northwest Territories (NWT) with greater decision-making powers over a range of new responsibilities which will lead to jobs, growth and long-term prosperity across the Territory.
