ndpOn Wednesday, May 8, to raise awareness for hunger in Canada, Food Banks Canada is challenging Parliamentarians to fast for the day. Well, I'm accepting this challenge, and I invite you to join me! According to Food Banks Canada's 2011 HungerCount, these are the numbers on hunger in Alberta (source: Edmonton's Food Bank) • Each month, almost 60,000 Albertans used a food bank • 43.7% of people assisted by Alberta food banks are children • Each month, approximately 21, 500 Alberta households are assisted by food banks • Over 25% of people using Alberta food banks are working • The number of people using Alberta food banks has increased by 74.5% since 2008. We have a lot of work to do to combat hunger in our communities, but we can only do it together. Stop by your local food bank with a nonperishable food item for donation today.Apr 26, 2013 10:44 am | Alberta, Edmonton—Strathcona - MP
ndpOn this Earth Day 2013 demands for federal action have been amplified. This is not simply because of mounting concerns about climate change, disappearing species or impacts of pollution on our health. Concerns about environmental impacts are intensifying because of this Conservative government’s shredding of critical environmental protection laws, deep cuts to environment and fishery budgets, silencing of scientists, shut down of the experimental lakes and withdrawals from important international conventions and protocols. The “idlenomore” campaign awakened many more Canadians to the regressive Harper government reforms that weakened the federal role in protecting our natural heritage simply to achieve more fast -tracked developments. Today, my NDP colleagues and I tabled bills to restore protective measures for our designated Heritage Rivers (mine is C-496). But we must do more. I want to hear from you about other Alberta lakes and rivers that you believe also deserve greater consideration. It may be your family’s drinking water source. It may be your favorite river to paddle. It may be your grandfather’s favorite fishing hole or the nesting area for a threatened bird species. Send me your story (linda.duncan@parl.gc.ca) about a river or lake important to you and we will add it to our campaign to restore protections to Canada’s treasured waterways. I look forward to hearing from you.Apr 22, 2013 12:43 pm | Alberta, Edmonton—Strathcona - MP

ndp"The pickup games on outdoor neighbourhood rinks, the parents who spend hours each winter flooding a patch of their backyards or clearing off a pond on their farms, the early morning peewee practices and the men’s league games that go off at midnight because no other ice time is available; even road hockey where piles of snow fill in for proper goal posts and a tennis ball doubles as a puck — those are the backbone our national cultural love affair with “our game.”"Mar 27, 2013 7:03 am | Alberta, Edmonton—Strathcona - MP

ndpToday’s federal budget shows a lack of recognition of Canadians’ priorities. We had all hoped for a focus on building a fairer, greener and more prosperous Canada for all – not just a well-connected few. Albertans wanted to see a return of federal investment in the ecoENERGY Retrofit Program, which provides well-paying jobs in the energy efficiency sector. It is disappointing that the budget includes no mention of the long awaited Canadian energy strategy or anything about how we can trigger private investment in cleaner energy sources, providing well-paying technical jobs. I am very concerned that there’s nothing to the high unemployment rate for students, especially in the wake of the cancellation of the provincial student job program. New Democrats will be calling for greater attention to directing Canadians’ tax dollars towards their priority needs: health care, education, and sorely needed infrastructure. I welcome your ideas and comments.Mar 21, 2013 5:14 pm | Alberta, Edmonton—Strathcona - MP

ndpI and my New Democrat colleagues share the view expressed by Half the Sky authors Sheryl WuDunn and Nicholas Kristoff that the inequity women face across the planet remains a moral challenge that must be addressed head on. How brilliant that they have created a video social impact game that channels matching contributions to bring concrete measures to lift women out of poverty or illiteracy. Try the game here: http://bit.ly/Wzj0qk How shameful that the percentage of aboriginal women in Canadian prisons is rising. That girls and women are trafficked for profit. That young girls worldwide must endure forced marriages. That girls are denied an education or access to positions of power. I hope you will join us as we walk for the rights of women starting 1:30 PM Saturday March 9 at Corbett Hall, University of Alberta. See event details here: https://www.facebook.com/events/496893537013752/ “Closing the gender gap is a key priority, not only for achieving sustainable economic growth, but also because it is about fairness and equity. We cannot wait any longer; further action is needed, particularly in face of the ageing of the population and the global economic crisis which are putting additional pressures to the gender equality agenda.” OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría at the World Economic Forum in Davos, January 2013Mar 08, 2013 2:17 pm | Alberta, Edmonton—Strathcona - MP
