libI would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the campaign team, volunteers and supporters. Everyone worked very hard and we had a terrific response at the door. Congratulations to Nora, Marc and Phil for their fine efforts. And credit to each of them for no personal attacks, just a clash of ideas and policies. The local campaign was fair and civilized, the way politics should be.May 03, 2011 7:30 am | Ontario, Brant

libGreat visit from Michael Ignatieff today in Paris. A warm welcome, ice cream, fritters, beautiful weather and lots of supporters. He is an excellent leader and the Liberals have the most substantiated, effective plan that will make life better in Brant and Canada.Apr 30, 2011 12:23 pm | Ontario, Brant

libWell-respected columnist Jeffrey Simpson calls NDP platform "full of guesses and wild errors of costing" as well as "the Pandora's box of an irresponsible and dangerous pledge to reopen the Constitution." To those considering voting for the NDP, Simpson suggests be extremely careful. The only party with a fiscally responsible plan that invests in the people of our great nation, is the Liberal Party.Apr 29, 2011 8:30 am | Ontario, Brant
libJack Layton's promises will cost us $70 billion. He has no clue how he will pay for these promises... It's not rocket science, Layton will have to raise our taxes significantly if he intends to fulfill his promises... says he'll take the money from "big oil" and "big banks". Sorry Jack, the oil companies and banks will simply pass on the extra costs to consumers... you and me.Apr 29, 2011 8:28 am | Ontario, Brant
libREMINDER: "Liberal Gas Guy" Dan McTeague (MP Pickering, Scarborough East) will be visiting the campaign office (625 Park Rd N) today at 4pm. All are welcome to attend, bring a guest and learn more about the Liberal strategy to combat price gouging at the pumps.Apr 28, 2011 9:30 am | Ontario, Brant
libThere are only 2 political figures in Canada who want to re-open constitutional talks: Duceppe and Layton. Jack's bump in the polls is directly attributable to his transparent attempt to court the separatist vote. It seems to have worked in Quebec and fooled some media. The rest of Canada doesn't want further talks about the constitution, but Jack will say just about anything to get votes and garner attention.Apr 28, 2011 9:02 am | Ontario, Brant

libBCI students very pleased about Liberal Party's Learning Passport. I was told it will allow many to go to university/college. $1,000/year for every student who for post-secondary studies, up to 4 years for a total of $4,000. If you are from a low income family, the grant rises to $1,500/year or $6,000 for 4 years. You get the grades, you get to go. The strength of Brant is its people. That's where we need to invest.Apr 27, 2011 4:23 pm | Ontario, Brant
lib"Liberal Gas Guy" Dan McTeague (MP Pickering, Scarborough East) visiting our campaign office (625 Park Rd N) tomorrow, Thurs. April 28 at 4pm. We'll be discussing Liberal 3 Point Plan to control gas and energy prices. One of our priorities is putting an end to price gauging at the pumps. All are welcome to attend, bring a guest and ask questions about the Liberal platform.Apr 27, 2011 12:18 pm | Ontario, Brant

libStrategic voting being widely discussed. Many folks are very anxious to toss Harper out, and mention that Brant has been identified by all groups as a riding to vote Liberal if you wish to stop Harper. Hope people understand the wisdom of strategic voting - otherwise, we will get Harper in charge again...Apr 27, 2011 6:06 am | Ontario, Brant

libGood piece on Layton in the Globe and Mail. Good ol' Jack Layton tailors his message depending on where he is. In Ontario, he pretends to dislike the HST - in Nova Scotia, he praises the HST. He says no to strategic voting in Ontario, says it is great in BC... 2008 - "no" to carbon tax 2011 - carbon tax a good idea Jack's contradictions are catching up to him!Apr 27, 2011 5:50 am | Ontario, Brant

libSpoke with Sean Allen of Brant News last week and was asked about strategic voting. Harper is clearly wanting Canadians to vote NDP or Green if they don't vote Conservative... that is why he is rarely critical of those parties/leaders. He wants to spilt the anti-CPC vote as he knows this is the best way to ensure staying in power. Unfortunately, as many tell me, a vote for the Greens or NDP is a vote for Harper.Apr 25, 2011 8:39 am | Ontario, Brant
libCanvassed with supporters yesterday on Fairview and Dunsdon. Terrific response from homeowners and people driving by - lots of honking in support and sign requests. Lots of anti-Harper feeling "erosion of our democracy under Harper" said a former Conservative. Wonder if anybody in CPC caucus dares speak up against Harper - none do so publicly... presumably proud to be first ever gov't found in contempt of Parliament!Apr 24, 2011 5:32 pm | Ontario, Brant
libThe most absurd statement I heard in 4 years in the House of Commons was from Finance Minster Flaherty. "All taxes are bad," he said in his budget speech. This from a guy whose salary has been paid by taxpayers, whose wife's salary is paid by taxpayers, whose 3 kids are educated with taxpayer dollars, whose health needs are paid for by taxpayers. The ignorance and hypocrisy of Flaherty's statement was astounding.Apr 23, 2011 4:52 am | Ontario, Brant
libStephen Harper, as President of the National Citizens Coalition some years ago, mentioned two-tier health care on a number of occasions. It was around this time that he wanted to "build firewalls around Alberta". We need to be concerned about Harper's unstated agenda - does he want to go down the road to two-tier health care... the rich getting better and faster health care than the middle and lower classes?Apr 23, 2011 4:47 am | Ontario, Brant
libMuch talk about NDP "surge" in polls. Harper laughing b/c it is exactly what he wants to see. He doesn't attack Layton as he wants to suppress Liberal vote and boost the NDP. As so many say, a vote for the NDP is a vote for Harper. 65% of Canadians do NOT want Harper as PM - if those 65% go 28% Liberal, 27% NDP and 10% Green, Harper gets precisely what he wants, another term as PM which is not good for Canada.Apr 22, 2011 9:19 am | Ontario, Brant
libPretty civilized debate at Rogers last night. Moderator and media panel did well... format in debates typically doesn't allow time for full answers... it is nobody's fault, just the way it is. Harper inaction on land claims was not addressed - 28 claims, 5 years of "talking" and nothing achieved.Apr 22, 2011 9:17 am | Ontario, Brant
libCanvassed in Ada Road and Chestnut area today. People are concerned about health care and affordability of our health care system. If Harper stays in office and billions are spent on US style prisons and fighter jets, not to mention large tax breaks for the most profitable corporations, there is justified concern that our health care system would not be affordable.Apr 21, 2011 2:47 pm | Ontario, Brant
libVery good meeting with Ralph Goodale today at the campaign office. He reminded folks that only one Conservative gov't has ever moved the country from a deficit to a surplus - John A MacDonald in 1883!! Usually, Conservatives move us from a healthy surplus to a deficit, and Harper is a prime example - he inherited a $12 billion surplus and, 5 years later, Harper has us in a $56 billion deficit.Apr 21, 2011 2:46 pm | Ontario, Brant

libEnjoyed meeting seniors at the CARP (Canadian Association of Retired Persons) Fair at the Best Western Brant Park Inn yesterday. Very informed folks, concerned about health care and the increasing costs of daily living. I told them of the very substantial boost to the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) promised by the Liberal Party, as well as the commitment to ensure that health care would be properly funded.Apr 21, 2011 6:12 am | Ontario, Brant
libWe have recently been advised that the Hon Ralph Goodale, former Minister of Finance in the Paul Martin government, will be visiting Brant riding today (Thursday, April 21). Mr Goodale will be at our campaign office (625 Park Rd N in Brantford) at 3:00 pm. Please feel free to drop in and to meet Ralph. Sorry for the late notice, but the visit was just confirmed yesterday!Apr 21, 2011 5:45 am | Ontario, Brant
libSpoke to a large number of folks yesterday and finding an increasingly strong anti-Stephen Harper vote. Many see a vote for the NDP or Greens as a vote for Stephen Harper, and they may well be right, as Harper is counting on a divided opposition to keep him in power. It's good to hear that the only way to stop Harper and the weak CPC plan is to vote for the Liberals and their strong policy/plan.Apr 20, 2011 6:03 am | Ontario, Brant
libAttended debate hosted by the Chamber of Commerce at Hampton Inn last night. Very well-organized by the Chamber and capably moderated by Steve Portelli. Large crowd with some very insightful questions... land claims, corporate tax cuts, the CBC, green energy possibilities, First Nations education, the Senate, the health of our democracy - a variety of issues addressed!Apr 20, 2011 5:58 am | Ontario, Brant
libLast Friday Justice Minister Nicholson didn't talk about the prisons he, Harper & Phil want us to pay for... $13 BILLION and crime rate is going down. These guys want to burn our money on US-style prisons. It's hard to follow the logic. It can't be a "tough on crime" issue... if Harper wanted to be tough on crime he wouldn't have Doug Finley, who is facing charges, as a key campaign adviser for the Conservatives.Apr 19, 2011 5:16 am | Ontario, Brant

libGreat meeting yesterday at Burford United Church. 5 of 6 candidates were present for a discussion of issues. The theme was based on Karen Armstrong's writings, incl: her book on compassion. Our political process is damaged to some extent, as evidenced by personal attack ads and half-truths. Kudos to Rev Donna Kerrigan and the congregation for organizing a meeting that was thoughtful, respectful and issues-focused.Apr 18, 2011 1:55 pm | Ontario, Brant
libIt was a pleasure to see CJ Dick at the MS Walk yesterday. He was the Citizen of the Year a few years ago and singlehandedly raises thousands of dollars each year for Heart and Stroke, MS and other causes - he is a fundraising superstar and is out, virtually every day (at age 84), raising money for charities - you have seen him at Canadian Tire, Zehrs, and other locations - a very fine person!Apr 18, 2011 10:37 am | Ontario, Brant
libAttended the Best Start Parent Fair Saturday morning - great displays by many folks who look after our kids - too many to mention! Liberals 100% committed to federal funding for early learning/child care providing children with best start in life. Harper canceled all the funding - rather spend money on a G-8 summit ($1B) and US super prisons rather than childcare spaces - very odd priorities in Conservative circles.Apr 18, 2011 5:02 am | Ontario, Brant
libI attended the religious service at the Muslim Mosque on Friday. I try to attend once every 2 months or so. Imam Mohammed El-Farram is a very fine person, and any visitor is welcomed very warmly by those who attend regularly. The Muslim faith teaches harmony and peace, a love for all mankind - these beliefs are certainly evident at the Mosque in Brantford - I privileged to count many of these good people as friends.Apr 17, 2011 3:34 pm | Ontario, Brant

libHard to understand the lack of integrity in the Harper team. They splice comments made by the AG from YEARS ago complimenting Liberal spending and pretend it is the AG talking about the $1 billion G-20 summit in Toronto in 2011... An outrageous distortion of the A-G's remarks! People are starting to figure Harper out - he will say or do anything to stay in power. http://bit.ly/eBciWHApr 12, 2011 6:34 am | Ontario, Brant
libLater today in a live online town hall, Liberal candidate Marc Garneau will announce “Digital Canada,” a Liberal government’s strategy to make Canada a world leader in digital technology by invigorating our democracy, our economy, and our culture – and putting the full power of information and action into citizens’ hands. http://www.liberal.ca/newsroom/news-release/liberal-party-canada-announces-digital-canada/Apr 11, 2011 11:43 am | Ontario, Brant
libLiberals are committed to ensuring that our military personnel have the finest equipment. People ask me about the $30 billion fighter jets - this will be the largest purchase in the 144 year history of Canada and it is critical that we do it properly. Entering into an untendered contract for a single-engine jet is not the most prudent way to deal with the most expensive purchase in the country's history.Apr 11, 2011 6:12 am | Ontario, Brant

libCanada is way behind re: number of people who have commited to donating their organs on death. 18% of Ontarians have signed their donor card, compared to 86% in Oregon. Are people in Oregon more generous? No but they are likely more aware of the importance of signing donor cards. We are joined by our common humanity; there is no better way to help each other than to provide the precious gift of life.Apr 10, 2011 6:40 am | Ontario, Brant
libVery touching event yesterday to raise awareness of the vital issue of organ donors. Wonderful speeches made by very brave individuals who have received an organ from others, a true life-saving event. It is an event that I look very forward to each year.Apr 10, 2011 6:37 am | Ontario, Brant
