The Town of Milton today celebrated the start of construction on the Milton Arts and Entertainment Centre and Main Library and the expansion of the Milton Sports Centre. The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Member of Parliament for Halton and Minister of Labour; the Honourable Margarett Best, Minister of Health Promotion for Ontario; and Gordon Krantz, Mayor of the Town of Milton, were pleased to recognize these important infrastructure projects now underway. “These projects will provide Milton families and residents with sports and cultural facilities to enjoy for years to come,” said Minister Raitt. “Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our government is investing in thousands of community projects like these to create jobs now and benefit future generations.” The combined federal and provincial investment in the two projects is $29,586,690; the total cost for the projects is $44,828,318. The Milton Arts and Entertainment Centre and Main Library will include a multi-use performing arts theatre, arts centre and new main library. The Milton Sports Centre expansion will add two new ice pads, a double gymnasium, an elevated walking track and a multi-purpose space to meet the growing recreation and leisure needs of the community.

On Saturday, January 9th, I will be hosting three broad based consultation meetings that will provide you an opportunity to give me your opinions on what the priorities should be for the upcoming session of parliament and the 2010 Federal Budget. Because of consultations held here in Halton and across the country last ...year our government was able to develop and deliver Canada’s Economic Action Plan which many have credited with protecting families and stimulating the economy. The meetings will be held in Milton, Burlington and Oakville and are open to all, and I would appreciate it if you attended to share your ideas.

91 years ago, the signing of the Armistice treaty between Germany and the Allies silenced the guns of the First World War. On November 11th, 1918 at eleven o’clock, silence descended on the battlefields. In fact, the last Canadian to be killed in World War I was fatally shot at 10:58. Born in Nova Scotia, his name was Private George Lawrence Price and he was a member of a Saskatchewan regiment. One minute later, the largest conflict the world had ever seen was over. Today, we recognize November 11th as an opportunity to give thanks and pay tribute to those soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our country and the values we share as Canadians. And, at the same time, we thank those Canadian soldiers who are today working to defend these values and promote peace in Afghanistan and around the world. The members of the Canadian Forces honour those who have come before them. Their bravery and self-sacrifice will always be remembered by our grateful nation. It is because of their dedication and commitment that Canadian families live in peace and security. Today, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we offer our gratitude and our commitment to never forget their service.

Lisa Raitt joined Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Oakville to welcome Tim Hortons back as they relocated to Canada as a Public Company. As a direct result of Conservative action to cut corporate taxes, Tim Hortons — perhaps Canada’s best known coffee shop — is announcing that they will be moving their head office to Canada. “This is a win for Halton, and many residents here will benefit from the decision made by Tim Hortons to move back to Oakville,” continued Raitt. “Equally important, this decision will not only create new jobs and generate economic activity, but it also sends a clear message to other companies around the globe that Canada is a great place to do business.” Since first taking office, our Conservative government has been working to lower tax rates on businesses of all sizes. We’ve also worked to decrease the red tape burden on businesses, meaning they will spend less time filling out forms and more time focused on growing their business.

On Saturday July 18th Lisa Raitt hosted her first community BBQ in support of the Oakville and District Humane Society. Lisa would like to very sincerely thank all those who came out to support the event and gave so generously to help look after the animals of Halton Region. Because of your support, we were able to donate more than $1,100 to the Humane Society. A special thanks to Laureen Harper, a longtime supporter of animal adoption, who came out to lend her support. The Prime Minister and Laureen have been foster parents to many cats during the past year. At any given time, the Harpers have provided foster care to numerous cats at their Ottawa home.
