The past months and years have proven to most Canadians that the Senate is an unecessary institution. Let's eliminate this antiquated nest of political hacks.

On International Women's Day, we should all recognize the accomplishments made towards gender equality by previous generations. However, we must also acknowledge the major imbalances that exist in Canada and abroad for women. It isn't fantasy to imagine a world without gender imbalance in the economy, government structures and the family. I've been blessed to have been raised by two parents who taught me that feminism means fairness for all. Let's keep up our efforts and make the world a better place.

Conservatives have now admitted to doing an automated push-poll with the aim of discrediting an independent federal riding boundary commission. This type of behavior would be comical if it wasn't such a mean spirited effort at gerrymandering our federal ridings. Parliament has independent commissions in this area for a reason: to nullify the ability of MPs to abuse their power to create boundaries that suit their own needs.

I am proufoundly annoyed to hear that robo-dial push polling is occuring in our province in an effort to torque opinion on our independent riding boundary commission. Justice Ronald Mills is a respected jurist. Dr. John Courtney literally wrote the book on Canadian boundary drawing. I am confident that the people of our province will see through this latest attempt to weaken urban representation. Bravo to Murray Mandryk and Stephen Whitworth for their efforts on covering this issue fairly.

On December 6th we honour the memory of 14 women who were targeted by mysogyny. As a father of a young girl, this day is not only important for the singular reflection on a precise moment of violence against women. We must remember that although Canadian society has made some progress towards equality - discrimination, physical, sexual and emotional abuse, gendered racism, and economic inequality between the genders continue to exist and in some respects, have increased in recent years. Our Constitution Act, 1982, enshrines the rights of equality as well as life, liberty and security of the person. Let us all take up the challenge to strive for those lofty goals - and collectively do our best to end violence against women and gender inequality from coast to coast to coast.

Congratulations to all the candidates who put their heart and souls into the Regina Civic election. I am confident that Shawn Fraser will be a strong, community-based voice for Ward 3 and more generally for the whole city on council. Special congrats go to my friend Heather Mcintyre for her spirited near-win, Marian Donnelly for giving Regina its closest mayoral election in 12 years, and to Kendra Strong-Garcia, who placed very well in her first crack at elected office.

This is the kind of pan-Canadian thinking that is needed in our country. A West-East corridor allows the citizens of Western Canada to maximize revenue from natural resources (which belong to the people). Moreover, this plan will create value-added jobs in Central Canada. A win-win for all. And as a clincher, such a plan would not require the dangers of the gateway pipeline.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. In this case, the adage fits. Regina is in the midst of a housing crisis and when low cost rental units are being torn down, it is a disgrace that they are being replaced with parking lots. Our federal MPs must address this crisis NOW and stand up for Regina!

Moose Jaw lost a great individual in Don Gude on August 25th. I had the opportunity to attend Don's funeral service today and reflect on a life well lived. Don was not only a well travelled citizen of the world, he was an empathetic and intelligent advocate for his friends, family and fellow citizens. I'll miss chatting with Don about world affairs. He will be missed.

21 years ago on today's date, the Parliament of Ukraine formally adopted a declaration of independence from the Soviet Union. Months later, Canada became the first western state to recognize Ukraine's independence, which would solidify the special relationship thereafter between Ukraine and Canada. As a proud Canadian of Ukrainian extraction, I want to wish the people of Ukraine and the millions of ethnic Ukrainians around the world a joyous independence day.

70 years ago today, several thousand Canadian soldiers participated in the Dieppe Raid. My grandfather John Evanchuk was one of those who stormed the beaches on that day. This battle demonstrated the horrors of war to Canadians, and to my family in particular. While we honour the valour of those who participated, we must also remember the extreme emotional and psychological toll that such terrible combat causes. My grandfather was haunted by the demons of Dieppe for the majority of his adult life. When i reflect on the anniversary of Dieppe, I am mindful of of that supreme sacrifice of soldiers like my grandfather and why "never again" must be our aim.

The federal riding boundary process depends on the input of citizens. For those of you in the Regina and Moose Jaw area, the commission will be holding a public hearing on September 17 at 10 am in the Ramada hotel on Victoria avenue. If you would like to make a submission, you must provide notice to the commission in writing no later than September 3rd. In your correspondence, the commission asks that your notice of presentation should include: your name, address and contact information the organization you represent (if any) the date of the public hearing that you wish to attend a short overview of the issues you intend to address your official language of preference, and any accommodation needs you may have. You may send your notice to saskatchewan@rfed-rcf.ca. The more submissions the better!

SKNDP Convention 2012 was a wonderful chance to re-connect with old friends, engage in the necessary process of debating ideas, and to hear from the many potential party leadership candidates. I was particularly happy to see 3 members of the Palliser NDP executive (Cory, Joanna and Paige) elected to the party executive, and that the party membership has unanimously passed a resolution in support of a Lethbridge declaration towards a prairie breakthrough for the NDP in 2015. Well done team.

One year ago Canadians made an historic decision and voted for the NDP in records numbers. As I reflect on that day, I reminded less of the fact that we narrowly lost in Palliser than the sense of hope and optimism that Jack Layton brought to the democratic process. With Thomas Mulcair at the helm, it's time for progressives to band together and show Stephen Harper that we can have a government that is both effective and empatheic, principled and pragmatic. Where we can achieve peace and universal prosperity. I promise to do my part in the next 4 years to make this happen. Who's with me?

Mental health is not a partisan issue. But it is a matter that needs to be discussed in public. I don't want any family to experience the emotional trauma mine did when my brother Russell took his own life. Our mental health system needs to be treated equally in the health care field, and those struggling with mental illness deserve to be treated with decency and dignity. Let's all work together to create a community where nobody feels alone.
