ndpJust when I think the Conservatives have reached their low point in bad behavior, like with the omnibus budget bill, they manage to surprise me. This time with an appalling attack on the UN Special Rapporteur on Food. His sin? Pointing out the obvious, that there is no excuse in a wealthy country like Canada for the fact that 2 to 3 million people do not have access to adequate food and nutrition. Not shame on him. Shame on us.oMay 16, 2012 8:25 pm | British Columbia, Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca - MP

ndpYesterday the Public Safety Minister sent a threatening letter to the RCMP Commissioner ordering that he is not to support any means by provinces to collect firearm information. Today I asked the Minister why he would try to stop provinces from setting up their own records on firearm sales to keep their streets safe.May 09, 2012 2:05 pm | British Columbia, Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca - MP
ndpStill no reasonable explanation given when we asked in Question Period again today how convicted British fraudster Conrad Black got express treatment on his request for a one year visitors visa when ordinary folks with much less serious criminal convictions are routinely refused. Of course Black did write an article from his Florida jail cell praising Harper as one of the great federal leaders in Canadian history. Meanwhile this Conservative insider is already back in his Toronto mansion.May 07, 2012 8:39 pm | British Columbia, Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca - MP

ndpVoting in the House of Commons now against Conservatives' motion to limit debate on their 425 page Budget Implementation Bill that slashes environmental Protection, attacks pay equity, raises OAS to 67, and takes a wrecking ball approach to so many public services.May 03, 2012 8:26 am | British Columbia, Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca - MP
ndpToday I asked the Public Safety Minister why the government is cutting emergency training programs and grants for small communities to respond to disasters. His response led me to believe that this was another reckless cut from the Conservative government with little thought given to how small communities will train their emergency workers in the future.May 01, 2012 3:15 pm | British Columbia, Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca

ndpLargest Victoria Day of Mourning ceremony this am to remember workers injured and killed on the job. Shamefully 142 BC workers didn't get home safe from work last year, more than 1000 nationally. Workplace safety would seem to be a good place to start if we really want to put families first!Apr 28, 2012 6:58 pm | British Columbia, Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca - MP

ndpAfter many months of pressuring the federal government, I welcomed today's announcement in Langford that they finally decided to fund their fair share of the E&N rail bed repairs. This is one step in the right direction to fix traffic congestion on Vancouver Island.Apr 10, 2012 10:36 am | British Columbia, Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca - MP

ndpProud to launch 2nd reading debate in the House of Commons Yesterday on Bill C-279. This is my Private Member's Bill to add protection for transgender, transsexual, and gender variant Canadians to the Canadian Human Rights Act and to the hate crimes section of the Criminal Code. Time for full equality for all Canadians!Apr 06, 2012 10:03 am | British Columbia, Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca - MP
ndpBoth sad and angry to see the Conservatives axe the nonpartisan NGO Rights and Democracy after interfering in its board and then claiming the internal turmoil as the reason. What do we lose? Excellent work done by Rights and Democracy in places like Haiti and Afghanistan and another piece of our international reputation. Combine this with the huge cuts to development assistance and it is a bad week on the international stage for Canada.Apr 04, 2012 4:13 am | British Columbia, Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca - MP
ndpStill counting the many ways I oppose this budget. But one thing I "like" about it is that it reveals the true colours of the Conservatives in their continuing attack on dissent. Cut the National Roundtable on the Environment because they might remind us of the climate change crisis. Cut the National Council on Welfare because they might point to growing inequality. Cut Katimivik because socially involved youth might get ideas. Launch a witchhunt against charities who might get political because they are tired of sweeping up after consumerism and corporate greed. These are indeed the Emperor's new clothes.Apr 01, 2012 10:01 am | British Columbia, Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca

ndpStill tyring to take in just how lousy a budget this is for Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca and for Canada as a whole. Attacks on retirement security and cuts to health care. No funding for E&N, severe cuts to DND, further cuts to DFO, abandonment of nearly all federal environmental responsibility, cuts to food safety. Some small mercies in small cut to veterans (but still a cut) and in eliminating the penny (about the only NDP idea in the whole budget).Mar 31, 2012 11:19 am | British Columbia, Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca - MP

ndpJust back from the Sport Fishing Advisory Committee meeting in Langford. With over 400 anglers and sport and recreational fishery operators present the message to DFO was clear: Don't come to us proposing more severe catch limits until you show you can manage the fishery and have a plan in place for habitat protection and restoration, for guaranteeing water flows in streams, and for re-opening hatcheries. This is the message I will take directly to the Minister in Ottawa.Mar 21, 2012 9:32 pm | British Columbia, Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca - MP
