Open Letter to NDP Members Dear New Democrat sisters and brothers, With less than a month to go until the NDP’s April convention, we wanted to share our collective thoughts on the NDP’s future based on our shared experiences. Without question the results of the 2015 federal election campaign left many New Democrat members across Canada disappointed. Indeed, we as well are saddened by the loss of so many great NDP MPs we would have loved to serve next to in Ottawa. But where the campaign stumbled on the national level, it was buoyed here on Vancouver Island (and Powell River, married to the Island but distinct in its own right) by a tailored regional strategy geared to win at the grassroots. It’s important to recognize that each of us ran our own localized campaign staffed by hundreds of committed campaign volunteers – that in itself is something every MP should be proud of. None of us could have achieved success without those hardworking supporters. These facts are both humbling and a great source of pride. But where our campaigns deviated is a source of note that we have passed along those at the national office in Ottawa. We won because of the strengths of our individual campaigns and because of the strength of our collective efforts. To put it bluntly; in our campaigns iron sharpened iron and together we managed to kick the Conservatives off the Island and Powell River. To be clear, this collective effort didn’t just help our exposure in local media. When the national campaign came to town our campaigns united to support these events. Tom made national headlines daily it would have been challenging to do this from our Island and coastal communities without him. It would be an understatement to say Tom was incredibly well received. In Comox so many supporters came out to see Tom that our original venue reached its maximum capacity fast. Many lined up and patiently waited for hours in inclement weather. In a sign of solidarity, Tom delivered his rallying speech outside standing on a bench in drizzle with thunderclouds threatening on the horizon. It was a scene to remember and New Democrats were fired up! But it wasn’t just campaign whistle stops that helped - there was an effort by the leadership to visit many times before the campaign. These multiple visits gave Tom a very intimate understanding of our communities. By the time the campaign rolled around, Tom knew the communities we represent like the back of his hand. Tom has seen the virtues of this kind of custom-made campaign and, more importantly, the results to back it up. This brings us back to the forthcoming convention and leadership review. As a group we are encouraging members to support Tom. Tom understands how to win a large region like ours and is invested in these results. Tom is a leader eager to learn, holds a strong passion of our beliefs and has a drive to win second to none. And when you have that alchemy with tested and proven results, the future looks very bright. Our grassroots collective efforts paid off on Vancouver Island and Powell River winning six of seven seats - now is not the time to turn our backs on what works but to rebuild based on those successes. Tom understands this. Without reservation, we support Tom Mulcair to lead our party into the future and are encouraging all delegates to do the same. In solidarity, Gord Johns, Courtenay-Alberni Alistair MacGregor, Cowichan-Malahat-Langford Randall Garrison, Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke Sheila Malcolmson, Nanaimo-Ladysmith Rachel Blaney, North Island-Powell River Murray Rankin, Victoria

Here is what my friend NDP MP and Caucus Chair Charlie Angus had to say about the Jian Ghomeshi trial since I couldn't have said it better myself: "I have known Jian Ghomeshi casually for 25 plus years. What did I learn from the trial? 1) That a woman who remembers being beaten is not considered credible because she didn't know the make of his car. 2) That famous people can afford lawyers known as "Hannibal Lecter" for their ability to take sexual assault witnesses apart. 3) That Jian won't bother to refute any of the charges because as some law expert says: "There are many reasons why an accused elects not to call evidence. One of them is that the complainants have been destroyed in cross-examination.'' 4) That Jian flourished as a predator in what should have been the safest organization in the country and that the legal system continues to fail women. 5) that nobody close to Jian even pretends he is innocent, and somehow this isn't an issue -- the women are."

Last Thursday I rose in the House as the NDP Defence critic to respond to the Conservative motion to extend Canada’s bombing mission in Iraq. While New Democrats continue to oppose the bombing mission, we are also concerned about the Liberal’s poorly thought out proposal to substitute an expanded training mission in the region as our contribution. Instead New Democrats are calling for Canada to take a lead role in cutting off ISIL’s lifelines: the flow of arms, money, and foreign fighters. The motion was defeated, but the Liberals have not set a date for ending our participation in the bombing campaign. Here is a link to my speech: https://youtu.be/hgti2ciQpuY

Thanks to the voters of Esquimalt Saanich Sooke for the strong vote of confidence on what was otherwise a bittersweet night for the NDP. I will miss many NDP colleagues when we return to Ottawa, this time to the task of keeping the Liberals to their promise to build a better Canada. But thank you to Canadians for voting to end ten years of bitter and divisive politics from the Harper government. And thanks to the 400+ volunteers who made it happen in Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke.

Who’s got your back? The NDP will legislate a federal minimum wage of $15 per hour as the first step in making sure those who go to work every day don’t end up living in poverty. We will expand universal affordable child care to all provinces and make sure parents can get back to work and still make ends meet. The NDP will take measures to create good family supporting jobs in renewable energy, shipbuilding, and manufacturing and not sell out existing jobs in agriculture and automotive industries with the TPP. We will roll back the Conservative attacks on unions and bargain fairly with public sector workers.
