Stealth confiscation: How Canada’s government regulates, freezes, and devalues private property—without compensation May 14, 2012 11:45 am - 1:30 pm The Sutton Place Hotel 955 Bay Street , Toronto Map Location In 1976, the Alberta government told an Edmonton farmer his private land was to be turned into a park and offered him a pittance for compensation; it was only in court years later that the province was forced to admit it actually wanted his land for a highway—which would have triggered much higher compensation. In Vancouver in 2000, the City told the Canadian Pacific Railway that CPR land was henceforth to be a public space—and that no compensation would ever be paid; six years later, the Supreme Court of Canada endorsed the de facto confiscation. In Ottawa, in 2005, the City decreed that property owners with newly-designated wetlands will not be compensated for a reduction in property values. What do these three cases—two from private landowners with limited resources and one from a corporation with much deeper pockets—have in common? All are examples of how government regulation can and does restrict the use of property to such an extent that such restrictions are akin to expropriation. Except that when governments use regulation to seize property, compensation is often small or in most cases, non-existent. There is a way out of such undesirable policy. Countries such as Sweden, Finland, Germany, Holland, Israel and others much more fairly treat private property owners, including compensation for regulations that “freeze” one’s property. They hold promise for reform within Canada.

In the past you've participated in petitions, polls and surveys that have given me valuable insight how to best serve you. Tomorrow morning at 8am we begin committee hearings on Bill 16. Bill 16 is to revoke the Pit Bull or breed specific banning in Ontario. The committee hearings will be streamed live on the Ontario Legislative Assembly's website, where subject experts will be testifying to the committee. Please visit the Ontario Legislative Assembly website and click on the Committee webcast link. This is an important step in the effort to repeal this unjust legislation, and I'm is seeking your participation. Together we can make change.

Much of what happens in Ontario politics never makes it into the media. I am one of many voices and representatives at Queen’s Park; here’s a bit of what I have been doing to represent my constituents’ interests, and for the betterment of Ontario.

This reporter got the story half right or by deduction half wrong. No federal or provincial government or party has proposed to celebrate our constitution, Conservative, Liberal or NDP. In addition, Tonda fails to mention that both the BNA Act and the Constitution Act were proclaimed on March 29th, hence my private members Bill to recognize this day as "Constitution Day"

Crown patents- I wish it were true. Just received the following note from the Canadian Constitution Foundation Just stumbled upon this today, Randy. You are correct, and the Landowners are wearing blinkers regarding this issue. In fact, it is rather alarming to see their dogged determination in the face of convincing legal opinion. <http://www.emcalmontecarletonplace.ca/20120322/news/Hillier+breaks+with+Landowners+group> I've given them the same opinion repeatedly and have found that my words just fall on deaf ears. I’ve invited them to show me these convincing cases they claim to have uncovered. On one occasion they sent me a few examples of cases mentioning land patents, but they seemed incapable of grasping that those cases failed to prove their point.
