Last week, legislation came into force that modernizes the Criminal Code regarding electronic evidence. It is now a crime to distribute intimate images of a person without consent and other acts of cyberbullying. Over the past few years cyberbullying has gained more notoriety after the suicides of teenagers Rehtaeh Parsons and Amanda Todd who both experienced prolonged cyberbullying. This legislation makes it clear that cyberbullying is a crime.

With the 2014 tax season upon us, I’m pleased to relay that our Government is partnering with communities to help seniors, newcomers and our neighbours of modest means. The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) may be able to help you if you have modest income and a simple tax situation. I’m pleased to relay that there are a number of partners in the Regina area participating in this service. At these community organized tax clinics, volunteers can help you to prepare your return. Thanks to the Regina Public Library, SaskTel Pioneers, and the Salvation Army Haven of Hope for hosting these free tax preparation clinics and to all volunteers for helping residents of Regina to meet their tax obligations. http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/vlntr/menu-eng.html

I would like to pass along some information regarding the loss of SIN data due to the Heartbleed bug. The SIN data of approximately 900 people may have been compromised. CRA will advise all impacted citizens by registered mail of this breach and provide them with a special 1-800 number to call for support and further information on steps to take to protect their personal information. CRA will also provide those impacted access to credit protection services at no cost and monitor further CRA accounts to prevent any unauthorized activity. Please go to www.cra.gc.ca for additional information.

Statement upon the passing of former Finance Minister Jim Flaherty “I am deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Jim Flaherty today.” “Without question, he was a public servant of the highest order in addition to being a great friend and colleague. He was a pragmatic, effective and dedicated statesman. It was an honour to work with him.” “On behalf of my wife, Sandy, and my staff, I offer sincere condolences to his wife, Christine Elliot, and their three sons, Quinn, Galen and John. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.”

Today, my colleague MP Laurie Hawn tabled Bill C-593, the Canadian Forces and Royal Canadian Mounted Police Former Members Personal Information Act in the House of Commons. This bill addresses a problem frequently heard from veterans: that they cannot access their own medical files in a timely manner in order to access benefits to which they are entitled. This bill enshrines their right to that information in law and puts the power to request that information and share it with the Department of Veterans Affairs where it belongs: in the hands of the veteran. Share this post and your support for our veterans and Mr. Hawn’s bill. Lest we forget. https://www.facebook.com/mplauriehawn#!/notes/laurie-hawn/mp-hawn-tables-the-canadian-forces-and-royal-canadian-mounted-police-former-memb/835201119827478
