On the eve of the vote on Bill C-400, here's my final plea to Conservative MPs: do the right thing on Wednesday night. "Support Bill C-400, allow the conversation to continue, and make an important contribution to Canadian society. And here's my plea to the rest of you: pick up the phone now, call a Conservative MP, tell them that you care about homelessness in Canada and tell them you want them to care too; you want them to vote in favour of Bill C-400."Feb 27, 2013 11:12 am | British Columbia, Vancouver Eastlib
There are countless differences that I can argue with the NDP, but I’d like to express my support for Marie-Claude Morin’s Private Member’s Bill C-400 which seeks to establish a national housing strategy. I realize that many are mostly interested in more trending topics like the “Legalization of Marijuana”, however, when 13% of Canadians are in core housing need -- meaning means they don’t have access to adequate, suitable or affordable housing we are in crisis. This many only be a statistic to most, but we are talking about are the most vulnerable among us – lower income Canadians or those living on a fixed income, such as seniors. Bill C-400 will force the government to develop a national strategy to help those that need us the most. The most recent update is that there are ”some issues with C-400 that need to be resolved in committee, namely that the timelines proposed will undercut the ultimate effectiveness of the strategy. It is also prescribes a heavy-handed role for Ottawa. It is important to remember that central government isn’t a panacea for all issues. The best role that Ottawa can play is to provide a long-term, stable source of funding for new affordable housing projects and for the maintenance of existing housing projects. The federal government can also play a role in bringing officials together to compare and contrast best practices – both here in Canada and around the world.” I hope these issues will be addressed adequately in committee, and C-400 can help to address the pressing housing concerns that exist in communities across Canada. This bill has my full support and hope everyone will keep housing in the discussion spotlight until we can see change. BIG CHANGE.Feb 14, 2013 12:23 pm | British Columbia, Vancouver Eastlib

"Is our broadcast history unimportant? Will future generations be frustrated that we had so little respect for our history? I think it is obscene that with our rich history of radio and television nothing is sacred, nothing has been saved. "There were an estimated 65,000 youth in Canada who were either homeless or living in emergency shelters in 2009. Vancouver’s 2011 homeless count found 349 homeless youth, an increase of 29 percent from the 2008 count. Research shows that the causes and characteristics of youth homelessness are distinct from those of the adult homeless population."Aug 07, 2012 10:11 am | British Columbia, Vancouver Eastlib
