To the people of Thornhill, With sadness, I must inform Thornhill voters that I have decided to withdraw my name from nomination as the PC Party candidate in the next election. This decision is entirely my own and results from length reflection and discussion with my family. I thank the people of Thornhill for sending me to Queen’s Park as their provincial representative in two successive elections (2007; 2011). I am truly grateful for your confidence. It has been my distinct honor to speak on your behalf and to stand for the values and ideals I believe Thornhillers embrace. My greatest pleasure has come from using my office to effect change for people at an individual level, where only the intervention of their MPP was able to afford them the help they required. However, having now carefully considered my situation for several months, I have concluded that continuing my political career would be a mistake for me. In summary, I will not be a candidate in the next provincial election. Further, I have resigned my seat in the Ontario Legislature effective December 31, 2013. Once again, I thank all Thornhillers for their ongoing support and I wish you well. Peter Shurman MPP - Thornhill

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 23, 2013 Statement from MPP Peter Shurman on Anti-Semitism in Thornhill Last week I was became aware of a heinous act of anti-Semitic hatred that occurred when a person or persons, as yet unknown, carved swastikas into the grass at the Richmond Hill Golf and Country Club. I was shocked and angered today to learn of another incident in Thornhill. On Thursday, August 22nd, four homes in the Beverley Glen area in Thornhill were targeted by senseless and cowardly acts of vandalism – two involved swastikas spray-painted on private automobiles parked in home driveways. Sadly, it seems that my statement last week was just a reflection of what must now be termed an unwelcome and nasty trend within our community. Not only can we see tangible proof that racism remains a fact of life within our midst but also an unacceptable, yet ever-present, aspect of our daily life. What is more sinister is that this is occurring right here in multicultural Thornhill and the GTA. In the last 6 months alone, the GTA has recorded numerous cases of anti-Semitic vandalism and it seems to me that the perpetrators have become more emboldened of late. Ontario, and very particularly Thornhill, is home to hundreds of cultures and ethnicities and it's one of the characteristics we celebrate about our province. Thornhill is where the largest Jewish population in Canada resides. Acts of hatred like those described remind us of the intolerance and hatred of bygone days, times we would prefer to believe are simply unfortunate historic aberrations. Sadly, we still come face to face with hatred like this today through the ignorance and willful expression of it by people who we can only label as relics of a tragic past. It is more notably hurtful as we approach the Jewish High Holy Days and is aggravated by the tensions in the Middle East, which actually do not involve Israel! I repeat my earlier words: there is no place in York Region, in Ontario, or in Canada for such actions. Several years ago I stood side by side in the Ontario Legislature with Members of Provincial Parliament of all political parties condemning language that incites hatred through my Resolution condemning the term 'Israel Apartheid Week' as used largely on university campuses each spring. It was a bold step in the right direction by the Legislature demonstrating that Ontario will not tolerate intimidation towards Jews or, indeed, towards any group, nor accept hatred of any kind. More recently, I was one of three MPPs who united the three parties to enact Jewish Heritage Month across Ontario every May. I will continue to agitate for tough sanctions when dealing with issues of hatred and racism. Canada is the ultimate mosaic – the envy of all peace-loving nations for our work in creating tolerance and full integration. We are at the pinnacle of growth, cultural diversity, and nation building. Actions like those in Richmond Hill and, now, right here in Thornhill only demean this work and the legacy of the thousands of new and born Canadians who have laid the foundation. With every hateful act, the words “never again” become more meaningful. Acts of hatred and racism are being witnessed all over the world. We must stand our ground here in Ontario and in Canada and fight against all forms of hatred perpetrated against any and all groups with vigor. As the MPP for Thornhill and as a target of anti-Semitism myself, I strongly urge the York Region Police to be unrelenting and vigilant in seeking out the perpetrator of these heinous acts and to treat these incidents for exactly what they are, hate crimes. -30- For Media Inquiries Contact: Ari S. Statement by MPP Peter Shurman on Hate Crime in Richmond Hill I have been made aware of the reprehensible acts of vandalism and hatred perpetrated by an as yet unknown person or persons and discovered yesterday at the Richmond Hill Golf & Country Club. The swastika is best known as a Nazi symbol and, in an area such as Richmond Hill/Thornhill, can only be viewed as an anti-Semitic statement by haters. Carving such symbols into the grass at a local golf facility frequented by Jewish players is, sadly, proof that racism remains an unacceptable yet real part of our daily life...even in multicultural Thornhill and the GTA. Ontario is home to hundreds of different cultures and ethnicities and that is one of the characteristics we celebrate about Ontario being the great place to live and work that it is. Thornhill is home to the largest Jewish population in Canada and acts like this remind us of the intolerance and hatred of bygone days, times we like to believe are simply unfortunate historic aberrations. Sadly, we still come face to face with hatred like this today through the ignorance and willful expression of it by people who we can only label as relics of a tragic past. It was a bold step in the right direction by the Legislature demonstrating that Ontario will not tolerate intimidation towards Jews or, indeed, towards any group, nor hatred of any kind. I will continue to press even harder for tough sanctions when dealing with issues of hatred and racism. Canada is the ultimate mosaic...the envy of many nations in the world for our work at tolerance and full integration. We are at the pinnacle of growth, cultural diversity and nation building. Actions such as those in Richmond Hill only demean that work and the legacy of the thousands of new and born Canadians alike who have laid the foundation.
