It’s been an honour and a pleasure to have Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall join us to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and Victoria Day. As Ontarians, we enjoy royal visits. We appreciate the Royal Family’s devotion to duty and their generosity of spirit, and their visits give us the opportunity to show them all we’ve achieved together in our province.

Brad Duguid, Minister of Economic Development and Innovation, recently attended the Ontario Centres of Excellence’s Discovery conference - the place to be for start-ups and observers looking to catch an early peek at “the next big thing” happening in Ontario. He shared his experience at the conference with us on BlogON(tario). Today, Ontario is a leader in many sectors, including automotive, clean tech, information technology and life sciences. With the help of Ontario Centres of Excellence and Discovery, we are working together to build an Ontario that can compete and win in the global economy. cc/ Ontario Innovation

As we celebrate the Victoria Day weekend, and host His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall, we're reminded of Ontario's rich heritage and the bright future we continue to build today. Here's what you need to know: - Despite a challenging global economy and continued uncertainty in Europe, Ontario's economy regained all jobs lost during the recession — including over 120,000 more new jobs last year. - The world has confidence in our economy — we make more cars than anybody else in North America and have the strongest banks in the world, with financial services employing up to 358,000 people. - We have Canada's largest mining sector — with a historic chromite development just announced in Northern Ontario in an area known as the Ring of Fire. - To care for our parents and grandparents and strengthen health care, we're adding three million more hours of home care to help 90,000 more seniors. - Our schools are ranked the best in the English-speaking world — and this year's high-school graduating class will be the first to benefit from our Ontario 30% Off Tuition Grant when they pursue postsecondary education next fall. Ontario Liberals have a plan to bring people together to sustain Ontario's momentum — one that makes the most of the quiet confidence of Ontarians in overcoming any challenge. We're fortunate to have a strong foundation for prosperity and Ontarians are determined to create a future of hope and opportunity for the generations to come.

Premier Dalton McGuinty has written to Canada's Premiers urging them to follow Ontario's lead when it comes to modernizing fees paid to doctors as part of a nationwide health strategy — and the other provinces are following suit. Changes in technology mean that more procedures can be completed in less time, but fees haven't kept pace. To protect the gains made in health care, we need to make the right choices. Here's what you need to know: - Alberta's Health Minister, Fred Horne, said: "I think what the [McGuinty] letter does is it highlights there are some opportunities to look at physician compensation Not only as a way to fairly remunerate doctors, which we want to do, but to also help drive improvements in the health-care system over all." (Globe and Mail, May 16, 2012) - Nova Scotia's Health Minister, Maureen MacDonald, said: "Doctors Nova Scotia asked that we review the fee schedule in Nova Scotia and we are doing that, and we are doing that with their participation It only makes sense that we modernize our fee structure. I think that it is cumbersome, outdated, and it can benefit from being streamlined." (Chronicle Herald, May 15, 2012) - B.C. has also signalled its interest and fees have been frozen in Manitoba for two years already. Manitoba Health Minister, Theresa Oswald, said the province is "ensuring we get good value for the precious resources we invest in health care." (Globe and Mail, May 16, 2012) Only Ontario Liberals include a strong Action Plan for Health Care as part of their plan to strengthen Ontario's economy, while protecting the gains we've made together.

Yesterday, Premier McGuinty visited St. Matthew's Bracondale House residents to talk about what personal support workers (PSW) mean to them. He announced we're moving forward on a platform commitment that came from Ontario Liberal members: more home care hours. Here's what you need to know: - We're making the right choice to expand home care by moving forward with a freeze on doctors' compensation so we can invest in the needs of patients. - Over the next three years, Ontario will help 90,000 more seniors get the care they need to live comfortably in their own homes. Ontario is adding three million more hours of PSW care, including one million more hours this year. - PSWs assist people with personal hygiene, do light housework, help with changing dressings and give reminders on how to take medications. - Providing PSWs allows seniors, people with physical disabilities and those with complex needs to live independently at home — where they're most comfortable — rather than in a hospital or long-term care home. - Helping seniors stay at home longer benefits the entire health care system by freeing up hospital beds for those who need acute care, reducing pressure on emergency rooms and saving money. Only Ontario Liberals have a strong Action Plan for Health Care that ensures access to the right care, at the right time, and in the right place.
