$321,978 for Canada Summer Jobs Next Summer for Students in Nickel Belt Employers Have Until Jan. 30, 2015 to Apply VAL CARON – Nickel Belt will receive $321,978 for employers to hire summer students next summer through the Canada Summer Jobs program, Nickel Belt Claude Gravelle said today. Employers have until January 30, 2015 to apply. “The government is again going with an earlier deadline for applications so the successful employers will be notified sooner and have more time to recruit students,” Gravelle said. “This is important funding for both the employers and for students in our struggling economy.” Non-profit organizations, public sector employers, municipalities and private businesses with fewer than 50 employees are eligible to apply. The government encourages employers to submit their applications online as they will benefit from a fast, easy-to-use, and secure way of applying. The online applications gives 24/7 access, instant receipt and a confirmation number for the application. Service Canada will inform employers of the status of their application in April 2015. For more information check www.servicecanada.gc.ca/csj or call 1-800-935-5555 (TTY: 1-800-926-9105) or visit a Service Canada office. The federal student jobs program was overhauled several years ago following a NDP-initiated Parliamentary study. The NDP argued successfully that the funding formula based on post-secondary students in the riding was bias against the north which was dealing with youth out-migration on account of few job prospects.

I did several interviews Tuesday about the news in Sudbury. I am a New Democrat. In good times and bad, I am a New Democrat. Winning or losing, I am a New Democrat. I learned early as an adult, working in this town, who had my back. It was the #NDP talking and fighting for labour, for working families, for those hurting in our community. So I am a New Democrat. In Ottawa, I have seen over and over how Liberals join Conservatives time and time again on votes or policy despite what they promised in election campaigns. I will do everything I can to ensure we re-elect New Democrats in the two Sudbury elections #ONDP #USW #CarolHughes #CharlieAngus #JohnRafferty #MalcolmAllen #IreneMathyssen

There is something special about community suppers as was evident last week in Sturgeon Falls for the Seniors Christmas Supper and two this past weekend I attended. Saturday night i was at the Field Christmas dinner. Sunday I made it to Warren for the Lions Club seniors Christmas dinner. The community spirit, the volunteers, the people coming out of their own homes to connect with one another make these suppers special. Oh yes, and the food!
