My statement in House of Commons today on working with Habs fans to save our French language TV broadcasts in the north was delivered in French and is up on Facebook here below. Here is the English translation NDP CELEBRATES COVERAGE OF MONTREAL CANADIENS’ GAMES IN NORTHERN ONTARIO OTTAWA – Today in the House of Commons, NDP MP Claude Gravelle (Nickel Belt) celebrated the agreement that will once again make Montreal Canadiens’ games available in Northern Ontario. Claude Gravelle: Like most people in Northern Ontario, I’ve been a big fan of the Montreal Canadiens for my whole life. Watching them on French TV is like a religion for us. In times past, it was Richard, Béliveau and Geoffrion; now we’ve got Price, Subban and Desharnais. Imagine our exasperation then when we discovered this fall that the new TV contract had blacked out the French-language RDS broadcasts and that the NHL had declared Northern Ontario part of the Toronto market. That should be misconduct, Mr. Bettman. Giving Habs fans a Maple Leafs jersey as a Christmas gift – how stupid! After several exchanges over the phone and by email, I was able to speak with the NHL, RDS, the CRTC, Eastlink and several other cable operators. I’m very proud to say that we now have a new agreement between Rogers, Bell, Eastlink and the National Hockey League. The French Habs broadcast is back, and the passionate fans of Sturgeon Falls and all across Ontario couldn’t be happier. Let’s go Habs!

Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford in remarks to the Mining Association of Canada this week tipped the real reason behind the lack of progress on Ring of Fire. The Conservative government wants badly needed Ring of Fire inferastructure money to come out of the existing, depleted Building Canada Fund, facing other major demands from Ontario. So much for leadership from Ottawa. Here is my question in Question Period Wednesday. There was no real answer other than more meetings.... http://claudegravelle.ndp.ca/conservative-inaction-on-ring-of-fire-hurting-northern-ontarians

I joined Thomas Mulcair as the leader met with mining company officials and Mining Association of Canada Tuesday. You know I worked 34 years for Inco. Tom and the NDP support mining done right. We recognize the good paying jobs for the region, taxes paid, GDP boost for the economy, that mines are the biggest employer of Aboriginal people in the country. I was impressed to hear Tom challenge the companies too to continue progress on full partnerships with First Nations, corporate social responsibility, social licence and all the NDP stand for #MiningAssociationofCanada #mining #sustainabledevelopment
