There is a huge B.C. ferry terminal project that has banished Canadian iron and steel because the U.S. government is footing the bill for the bulk of the work. "This is Buy America, in Canada, on federal land." These American protectionist laws harm Canada and are wrong. The Conservatives in Ottawa are screaming unfair when in fact their own trade laws they cooked up also harm Canadians http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/buy-america-shuts-out-canadian-iron-and-steel-from-bc-ferry-terminal-overhaul/article21763022/

The Conservatives here continue to play games with our veterans. There was the news late last week that they had failed to spend $1.1 billion dollars they had committed to spending for vet services. They knew that was to be in today's Auditor General Report so they this weekend announced a new $2 billion in mental health services. This is a shell game, politics played on the backs of our vets. Don't spend money committed for them. Grab it back to help fight their deficit. Announce new money. Now let's see how much of this $2 billion is not spent. The AG Report highlighted the overly complex process and longstanding barriers that have led to a 24% refusal rate for veterans applying for disability benefits. That means that 3,684 who applied for needed benefits were refused on first application. Despite a commitment in 2009 to mental health strategy, Veterans Affairs does not collect information or report on the effectiveness of it. We need a new government in Ottawa. New Democrats have called on the Conservatives to expand health services for all veterans and their families, re-open Veterans Affairs Offices and end pension clawbacks. Lets Not Forget. #CanadianVeterans

Stephen Lewis is one of my favourite people - human rights advocate, former United Nations ambassador, Ontario NDP leader. At 77, he is still a lion, here denouncing the Stephen Harper government for its role in the decline of Parliament, the suppression of dissent, the plight of First Nations, its blinkered climate change policy and Canada's plummeting world status. He was just warming up but ran out of time.... http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2014/11/23/stephen_lewis_roars_once_more_in_takedown_of_stephen_harper_government_tim_harper.html

My statement in House of Commons today on working with Habs fans to save our French language TV broadcasts in the north was delivered in French and is up on Facebook here below. Here is the English translation NDP CELEBRATES COVERAGE OF MONTREAL CANADIENS’ GAMES IN NORTHERN ONTARIO OTTAWA – Today in the House of Commons, NDP MP Claude Gravelle (Nickel Belt) celebrated the agreement that will once again make Montreal Canadiens’ games available in Northern Ontario. Claude Gravelle: Like most people in Northern Ontario, I’ve been a big fan of the Montreal Canadiens for my whole life. Watching them on French TV is like a religion for us. In times past, it was Richard, Béliveau and Geoffrion; now we’ve got Price, Subban and Desharnais. Imagine our exasperation then when we discovered this fall that the new TV contract had blacked out the French-language RDS broadcasts and that the NHL had declared Northern Ontario part of the Toronto market. That should be misconduct, Mr. Bettman. Giving Habs fans a Maple Leafs jersey as a Christmas gift – how stupid! After several exchanges over the phone and by email, I was able to speak with the NHL, RDS, the CRTC, Eastlink and several other cable operators. I’m very proud to say that we now have a new agreement between Rogers, Bell, Eastlink and the National Hockey League. The French Habs broadcast is back, and the passionate fans of Sturgeon Falls and all across Ontario couldn’t be happier. Let’s go Habs!
